Honestly, I can't find a better band than these guys. I have tried and tried, but Modest Mouse just puts too much on the table. I mean, come on, they're just so sincere and earnest, something lacking from a lot of bands these days.

The Lonesome Crowded West is in my top ten list of all time. It sits comfortably ahead of The Weakerthan's Left and Leaving as number one. Why do I love this record so much? It's hard to place your finger on it. It might have something to do with Isaac Brock's wide vocal range, from whiny (in a good way), to low and quiet. It might be Eric Judy's perfect bass, lying just below Brock's intricate guitar work. Or it might be Jeremiah Green's creative, funky drums. Hell, maybe it's just a mix of all three.

The CD kicks off with a bang, the opening song titled "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine." It's actually more like 3 or 4 songs in one, but that's the way Brock likes it. The rest of the CD is a journey, visiting such characters as Cowboy Dan, and taking a tour of the country in Trucker's Atlas. By far the most powerful song on the CD is Trailer Trash, a deeply heartfelt story of what might be Brock himself in the trailer park. If you get one song off the CD to sample it, it should be this one. Other notable songs include Doin' the Cockroach, Lounge (Closing Time), and Jesus Christ Was an Only Child.

As what has come to be an absolute with all Modest Mouse records, it is composed beautifully, changing moods at just the right time. Edgy at times, serene at others, downright sad at still other points, Modest Mouse's sound is decidedly unpolished, on purpose. They pull it off better than anyone I've yet to hear.

I sincerely hope you have this record, and if not, I pity you. If you buy one album this year, make it this one. You won't regret some reviewer using words to make you spend your money on yet another CD.

best modest mouse record. and by the look of it it'll always be the best one, not saying that their terrible now but i doubt they'll ever sound like this again.

I dont think modest mouse and the pixies sound alike. There are little similarities but not a lot. Besides, evertime a punk band is reviewed i never hear "hey the ramones called they want their sound back"

my bad, just that whenever the pixies are mentioned i gotta let everyone know how much they kick everyone's ass. little quirk of mine.

It's a shame that both modest mouse review discussions ended in the same comment.

I'm guessing that reference was to Tom Waits's "Singapore"

You know that's interesting, I seem to remember that on a certain other modest mouse review. Try something new, better luck next time.

Psshhh! Modest Mouse is just a band people claim to like so that they can write it on their various online community forum profiles so girls will IM them.

i used to hate this band so much and then one day my roommate had this record on the stereo and i was all "hmm, what is this?" and he was all "modest fucking mouse! see you do like them, hahahahah!" and i was all "goddamn. fuckin a." and then i listened to this album 8957894657846 times and realized that yeah, it really smokes. it might even be better than the moon and antarctica, if only for the more raw production. i don't think there is a moment of filler on this record, which is saying something, as it is 74 minutes long....ah modest mouse, always fillin up the record....

Unfortunately, if you absorbed anything but pop culture you would know that my previous post, although trite, is not derived directly from "Minority Report." The last Tom Cruise movie I saw was "Risky Business." Got to love whores.

I can still write circles 'round y'all.

ps. Please don't respond. Your lack of wit depresses me. Humph.

    My Score:

whoa now. first of all, anonymous don't be stealing lines from movies (ahem, Minority Report). secondly, relay1112, it wouldn't have been a bad review if you actually talked about the actual music on the cd. good word usage though.
let's just see what emptycauses' review is like, then we'll start drawing conclusions.

Yeah maybe you're misunderstood because you talk shit to people then wonder why they retaliated. I've got nothing against you though.

Emptycauses, I can't say till I've seen yours, but obviously you don't care that much about the album, you just want to flex your muscles on the internet. My hat off to you, you are indeed cooler than me. I look forward to the day when you will save this fine website from such horrible reviews as mine. You are truly the savior of the punk review world.

Maybe one day people will respond to reviews by talking about the band/album rather than the review..

If you don't like the review, write one yourself and post it here in the commments...

I sincerely apologize, dove, for trying to put something coherent down that actually told you something about the CD. I guess it's better if I would just combine three sentences into one so you can't understand a goddamn thing I say. Let me revise my review for you, so maybe you can understand it.

CD godo. Buy modset muouse CD cuzz i like ti.

It is odd to me that you claim to hold this album dear to your heart but your review sounds like a stoned Wyzo. Leave the reviews to the reviewers. I'm sure in your head writing a review sounded much better than it came out. Apology accepted.

    Ouch emptycauses, that hurts.

While we're sharing our favorite parts, mine is when you said you wrote yours first and that mine didn't deserve to be here, and you were wrong.

But enough shit talking, this CD is too good to have arguements in the comments area.
