Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)

If someone would sit down, having never listened to an Alkaline Trio album before, and listen to all four straight through, they would probably rank "Maybe I'll Catch Fire" at number four. At least that's how I felt. At first listen, it is the most inaccessible of Alk3's, but, like a lot of other great albums out there, the more you keep on listening to it, the more you like it. The album generally has a darker tone to it, especially compared to their first release, "Goddamnit." One thing I really like about "Maybe I'll Catch Fire" is that it doesn't really sound like any of the songs would fit in on "Goddamnit." Matt and Dan could have easily just written more songs in the same vain as the previous album, but they definitely went for a different feel.

1. Keep 'Em Coming: Opener to the album, very fast paced and upbeat song. Depending on my mood, this is the second best song on the album.

2. Madam Me: The darker tone of the album starts to come into play here. Definitely different from any Alk3 song at that time.

3. You've Got So Far To Go: Quite possibly the best song ever written by Dan Andriano for Alkaline Trio (I'm saying that because I'm just getting into Tuesday but I've only heard about 3 of their songs, so there might be a better one in there). It's a very mellow, laid back love song. Starts of with a cool bass line, incredible vocals, great lyrics. Another band ripped the bassline off, I won't mention any names though (Box Car Racer).

4. Fuck You Aurora: Like I said before, "Maybe I'll Catch Fire" has a very different feel from "Goddamnit," but this song is very similiar to San Francisco. There's a video of a concert over at www.alkalinetrio.com of the first time they played this song and it's just amazing to see the crowd actually singing along to chorus at the end of the song even though it was the first time they heard it.

5. Sleepyhead: Another darker song, but still incredible. Don't have much to say except I love the line "Earth to Sleepy Smile."

6. Maybe I'll Catch Fire: Another Dan song. Title track to the album. I must say that songs 6 through 9 are probably the ones that need the couple listen throughs to really start to warm up to them.

7. Tuck Me In: "Tuck me into bed with snakes/ Tuck me in with the tarantulas/ I wanna let 'em in my mouth and down my throat to lay their eggs." Now you understand why I keep calling this dark compared to Goddamnit. Quite a change from "I wanna wake up naked next to you kissing the curve of your clavicle."

8. She Took Him to the Lake: Dan's third and last song on "Maybe I'll Catch Fire." Great stuff, not much else to say.

9. 5-3-10-4: One of the best parts about Alkaline Trio's songs is that the verses can be mellow in a way and slightly depressing sounding at times, but then the chorus just explodes in this upbeat rhythm. This is a good example here.

10. Radio: This song doesn't really need an explanation. This is probably the best song EVER written in the history of music. Just incredible, incredible stuff. If you are making a mix CD to give to a friend or just want to introduce Alk3 to someone, play this song and they will instantly fall in love with the band. I have to mention that I've seen them twice live so far, but I've yet to hear this played. Maybe next time.

So there it is, an incredible album. Another classic for the best record label out there (Asian Man). I'll have to say though, this isn't my favorite Alk3 album. My suggestion for people just getting into the band is to definitely get "Goddamnit" first, then get "Maybe I'll Catch Fire."

Radio is an incredible song, the rest of the album is brilliant as well. I don't think they've sold out on 'crimson", i still think it's pretty solid. They've definately changed their look though, if you see videos of them playing like 5 years ago, there's no make up or black suits back then.

Maybe I'll Catch Fire is definitely the best Alkaline Trio album. I definitely recommend it to anyone who at all likes Alkaline Trio, or if you want to get in to them. Unlike many other people, I was into this album the first time I listened to it. I even got my roomate into Alkaline Trio by playing this album, and she doesn't like punk - she says it makes here head hurt! She's more into metal and feminist shit. I don't know.. well, It's great- that's all there is to it!!

i think the "this record is shitty pop-punk but their old stuff was good" people need to pull their heads out of their asses. goddamnit and most of the songs on their self-titled are much much more pop oriented than this album. just because the production was rougher doesn't make it any more "punkrock" and any less poppy. fuck.

i think this album has an edge over all their other release. it's just got a big slab of bitterness and darkness that their other stuff touches on but doesn't fully explore. if you think this is the album where the trio became "just another shitty pop-punk band", you are a grade A moron.

and the thought of 15 year old girls singing "shakin like a dog shittin razorblades" is frigthetning.

    i need some sleep.

Its more than just angry, its evil music (infirmary's lyrics got more lame than evil, but eh).

Of course, the next time the trio played they were on vagrant and i couldnt get tickets cause they sold out to people who were sperm when this record came out.

I think its impossible to really say that this, goddamnit, or i lied my face off are better albums (or in face's case EP). They're the trio in there prime before they got really really redundant. Jaked on green beers was alright, the solo material hopefully got all the crap out of there system.

pop-punk has become such a bad word, I dont get it. You say they became pop-punk, they have ALWAYS been pop-punk!!! Goddamnit is a pure pop-punk record. Its a little more raw than the others but its pop oriented regardless.

FHTI is a weaker album, but its still better than a lot of other bands albums. The split songs were better than FHTI and Jaked On Green Beers gave me hope for the future.

Of course, this is someone with a trio heart tattooed on their arm, so Im not exactly unbiased.

when it comes to the trio, one of the reviewers at pitchfork got it just right in calling them fast food music - fast, greasy and leaves you with a guilty feeling afterwards, but satisfying at the same time - but i still rate them higly as one of my favourite bands. but then, i also rate office space as one of the best movies ever made too.

Good CD. I think it's going a little too far to call Radio the best song ever.

To the numbnuts about halfway down...The Boxcar Racer bassline is a blatant ripoff. It doesn't matter one bit if they move it down "two half steps" (hmm...one whole step?...if you want to sound smart at least get that right), it is still the same progression, same rhythm. I'm not trying to come down on Boxcar Racer or build up Alk3 because I really don't give a shit. But to say it's not the same bassline is retarded.

this is my favorite alkaline trio album. your first paragraph of the review was dead on. i thought it was kind of lacking when compared to goddamnit at first but the more i listened to it, the better it got. it's a bit darker and more morbid than their other releases. not as accessible.

i don't know, this record sorta has a special place for me, every morning over the summer, i'd get up and drive to work at around 5am exhausted on about 4 hours of sleep. i'd always put this in, it just fit the mood perefectly. i remember stumbling into my car and starting my morning out with "keep 'em coming". that became my theme song. "toothpicks pry open my eyes". it's the perfect album when you're tired and depressed.

there is no filler here at all, no weak tracks whatsoever. especially not 5-3-10-4 as someone mentioned earlier, that's one of my favorite songs.

i liked "maybe i'll catch fire" the first time i heard it. it was my favourite track on the album. i also thought she took him to the lake was a bit filler sounding and radio is a different sound for alk3.

Damn good cd, although I don't really like the first song too much. Almost reminds me of old U2 or something...

i agree with most of yr review. i hate to tell you this though, radio should be no ones introduction to alkaline... it's not an indicator at all of what this band is about or capable of. i think just about anything off of goddamnit, or the eps, or even infirmary would be a more true example of "the alkaline trio sound". of course that's just one opinion.

and on another note, they ended almost every show they played for a good couple years with radio, i think they're sorta burnt out on it, the last like five times i've seen them they havn't played it... don't get yr hopes up. besides 97 and my friend peter are way better closers...

ok i think this album is great, however i still like "goddamnit" better. It just sounds like it was hastily put together in my opinion (course my opinion means shit on this website). There are some great songs on here, such as "keep em coming" "fuck aurora" "maybe ill catch fire" and of course "radio". But it still strikes me odd whenever i listen to it. Also, on a funny side note, Matt Skiba wrote "radio" in half in hour in the studio because they needed one more song to finish off the album. (wouldnt tht mean its a filler track??) And while im at this, asian man records fucking rules this universe

I like asian man records too, they have lots of great records and they always give me free stuff when I buy stuff from them mailorder...I agree that if you aren't familiar with Alkaline Trio stuff you should get "Goddamnit" before this, but they're both incredible...

    My Score:

I remember how excited I was when this one came out, having become really obsessed with them when Goddamnit came out and even more obsessed when I Lied My Face Off came out. I think I was dissapointed at first, but it grew on me. Not as amazing as the afformentioned releases, but still very good. Radio, Fuck You Aurora, Sleepyhead and the title track are four of their best. Keep 'em Coming, 5-3-10-4 and She Took Him to the Lake kinda feel like filler though.
