Hardcore without metal.

Punk without pop.

Emotion without the friggin' whining.

Rise Against's 2001 release The Unraveling seemed to literally come out of nowhere. I had some interest, primarily because I heard that a significant proportion of the band were from 88 Fingers Louie. But in all honesty, I wasn't looking forward to it as much as some other records coming out that year.

However, The Unraveling was a completely surprising debut. It was a strong, original melodic hardcore record, puctuated by a uniquely heavy rhythm section, and Tim's standout vocals.

Well, Revolutions Per Minute easily tops The Unraveling.

To begin, it's a lot darker than their debut; lyrically and melodically. While their previous record had more upbeat and nearly poppy passages, Revolutions... seems to spend much of it's 37 minutes in a simultaneously furious and reflective place. It feels more honest, and personal, and achieves a real catharsis. It certainly comes from a familiar place; double-tempo guitars, those heavy Fat-produced guitars, speedy vocals, but it ends up somewhere different altogether.

Tracks like "Black Masks & Gasoline" and "Amber Changing" play off a emotional punk sense, while other songs like "Dead Ringer" and "To the Core" are almost pure raging hardcore. It's apparent that the band is writing more as a unit now, and it comes through in the seamless bridges between vocals and instrumentation.

While the band is clearly coming from a hardcore and punk background, it genuinely doesn't sound like anything I've heard. Many people have tried to blend punk and hardcore like this, but mostly we end up with the weakest bits of hardcore, and the weakest bits of punk, kind of mashed together. Instead, on "Revolutions..." we get an impressive sense of melody with a really visceral hardcore edge.

The surprise, and possibly in-joke of the record is of course, a cover of a ultra hair metal track by Journey called "Anyway You Want It." Best known (at least to me) as that song from the Simpsons with Rodney Dangerfield, Rise Against manages to play it perfectly, it's not even in double-time as is the norm with Fat covers. It's a nice refrain after the overall darkness of the record, and even it's cheese metal origins don't detract from the earnestness of the record.

I can say this: Revolutions Per Minute is easily among the best records you'll hear this year. A perfect blend of hardcore and melodic punk, without any of the usual trappings of the genre.

CRAZY GOOD!!! it just might be one of my favorite records. you can't really describe this. there aren't many lyrical themes, but that works to a good advantage. i got this CD a while ago and i still like it. the songs manage to stay interesting, although some have limp choruses. the singers voice along with the pillage of the guitar, drum and bass will haunt you in your sleep. get it you motherfuckers!!! if you like Metal, Punk, or just plain rock, this is your favorite album. the guitar solo on "blood, red, white and blue" scares the fuck out of you, right when you think that the mostly boring track is over. and once the unforgettable "amber changing" is over, an hilairiously god cover of pop metal band journey kicks in as a bonus track.

This cd was a total let down for me. I was expecting alot out of this album and I didn't get much for the $11 I paid for it. There are really only 2 maybe 3 good songs on this album. Numero Uno - This CD kicks amazing ass, it is better than a lot of crap that has come out in the past year or 2.

#2 - Kid Dynamite is NOT a hardcore band, they rule, yes, they are NOT hardcore though, they are just a good ol' fashioned punk band, trust me, i've seen them and I know...they are the best thing thatcame out between the years of 1996 and 2001 though.

and finally #3 - NMB (none more black for all you that don't know) do still kick ass, Yea, they are a little catchier than KD was, but they weren't a Fat band when they started, they recorded a demo, shopped it and Fat picked it up, so all you assclowns that classify them as a Fat band, they are not...NOT when they wrote the songs...

    My Score:

from a few things i've read here:

RISE AGAINST- Out of the 500 CDs i currently own, Revolutions Per Minute is definitely in the top 10. I received a promo copy of this about a month before it came out, and i have not stopped listening to it yet. It's in my cd player every damn day. The only other discs that have been in competition with my player in the last 2 months are Alkaline Trio's "Good Mourning, Suicide Machines' "Steal This Record", and None More Black's "File Under Black", which are ALL very awesome albums. The record release shows in Chicago were fuckin' awesome, and it was also awesome that they changed the set so much between nights.

RANCID- WAY OVERRATED BAND!!! I'm like Rancid, but they are nowhere near the gods everyone is making them out to be. Their first album blows, "Let's Go" was alright, "Wolves" was good, "Life Won't Wait" was their best, "2000" was good, and i'm not looking too forward for their new album. Good musicians, decent lyrics. A good band, but shut up already. Get your dick out of their asses.

LAGWAGON- After MUCH praise for their new album, i gotta ask what the hell everyone was talking about. This is probably my dissappointment album of 2003.

And to the guy bitching about pop punk on Fat, calling this probably Fat's heaviest band, have you ever heard of a band called Sick Of It All? Yeah, they're not exactly pop punk.

And why do people insist on comparing Kid D to Lifetime. Ill never understand this. Id say that Jersey's Best Dancers was one of the best punk album of the 90s. Kid D s/t was one of the best hxc albums. So why compare bands with nothing in common. Its like comparing Iron Maiden to Run DMC. Differnt message, scene , blah blah blah. I hope you see where im going with this.

    My Score:

I think punk bands have a particular responsibility to question the status quo. I just think that in this day and age the reasons for and against war (and many other national policies) are far more complex than Rise Against is capable of addressing. Maybe it's too much to ask, but I think that if a band is going to attack anything it should have something more profound to say than just "Amerika" sucks.

I accused Rise Against of being the punk rock Linkin Park because the band doesn't depart from a tried and true formula for writing "angry and political" (TM) punk rock (ala Fury 66, Missing 23rd, Good Riddance, Death by Stereo, Satanic Surfers, etc.).

In other words, it's not a good album because it doesn't say anything and it sounds like it's been done before.

So, you ask, "what punk bands actually do have something interesting and unique to say (i.e. who writes lyrics that require more than an elementary school education to relate to?)?"

These are all (of course) open to debate, but how about Propagandhi's "Less Talk, More Rock" - which had more content in its liner notes than a college civics class - Guyana Punchline, Scrotum Grinder, the old British band Crass, Fugazi, Strike Anywhere, D4, and (in my humble opinion) Trial by Fire, for starters.

Finally, on a completely separate note: Lifetime was better than KD, but only their Jade Tree stuff. Listening to their New Age release is like shooting NyQuil... getting very sleepy... what is that repetitive droning?

The Rise Against album is one of the better melodic punk albums Ive heard in quite a while . The music is different, the message is different, the scenes are different. Give me some examples of countless other bands that are doing this kind of sound. From what Ive seen and heard, many bands are trying to cash in on the nu-emo trend. After reading these comments it just goes to show how people can get off the topic so easily and bitch about stupid things not even related.

The new Rise Against is amazing. Go Get It. It is a great progression from 'The Unraveling' and the hidden track is a nice addition. This is probably up there in my top favs with Strung Out American Paradox. I see RA's new album being one of the best of the year... although there are many more to come (Good Riddance, Thrice, Pennywise). 'Nuf said.

Rise Against is the punk side project of Linkin Park.

Or it sounds like it. "Heavy riffs" (TM) with "passionate vocals" (TM), "politically charged lyrics" (TM), and "hardcore credibility" (TM).

There is no art in merely recreating what countless other bands have done countless times (and frequently better). Further, in these complicated times describing "Amerika" as conducting war for pride is insufficient, inappropriate and cliche.

One of the things that makes bands like Strike Anywhere so interesting is that they don't just say the obvious. I don't remember the song title, but an excellent example is from their recent Jade Tree album where they wished "a good cop the very best, and a bullet for all the [rest]."

Fat put out some great releases last year - stuff that really had something interesting to say. Rise Against, however, harkens back to the late 90's when Fat was just treading water.

There's a place for music like this: as background music on MTV, over the PA between acts at the Warped Tour, and in the record collection of people whose appreciation for music is only as deep as the rebellious slogan on their $18 Hot Topic t-shirt.*

*p.s: although Hot Topic does deserve props for making alternative lifestyles accessible - particularly in localities where there are no good independent record shops.

Rancid dosen't have any more people who hate them than any of the other "big" punk bands (NOFX, Pennywise, Lagwagon, AFI etc). As soon as you hit a certain level of popularity you reach a saturation point in which people who wouldn't have naturally gravitated towards your music hear you and have to hear others talk about you... therefore you hear from them.
