Having looked at the bands that have been reviewed on this site I was pleased to see that there is a solid mix between mainstream and underground bands, but the reviews of the older and origional punk bands are few and far between. So I thought it would be a good idea to beef up this section of reviews with the band "STIFF LITTLE FINGERS".

"INFLAMMABLE MATERIAL" is slf's first full album and opitomises the style of punk at the time being raw and politically charged. Growing up in Belfast (Northern Ireland) in the 1970's greatly influences their lyrics and this is shown right from the off set with the song "Suspect Device" about overthrowing the IRA and loyalist paramilitaries. The band manages to connect with their audience through their raw political sound but most songs are catchy with great hooks though all songs on this album have a seious undertone a perfect example being "wasted life" about refusing to get caught up in violence. The song "White Noise" is one of my favourites as its sound is punk rock personified, its catchy as hell as Jake Burns screams about white Britain being racists- "black wogs black wogs your face don't fit, black wogs black wogs- you ain't no Brit." What a fantastic example of typical punk sarcasm. I have to briefly mention "Alternative Ulster" the most famous song on the album and perhaps the band's most famous track, it has one of the most catchy riffs I've ever heard, most punk fans have probably heard this one.

Stiff Little Fingers have influenced many bands including Green Day, which is what got me listening to them in the first place, they sound a lot like the clash in London Calling in this album and I would recommend this album to any fans of both mainstream and underground punk. It's a must have that I promise you will enjoy.

Great album, possibly better than the Clash S/T. I think that doo-wop part on barbed wire love is kinda odd, but it works well w/the song.

good review, but britneys 1st album is so much better than stiffs, and will go down in punk history as one of the best ever recording artists

This is to those who are bitching about my comment on slf influencing green day. I never said they sound alike once on this review- green day were influenced by the clash, do they sound like them? blink were influenced by nofx and screaching weasle, do they sound like them? Do fucking Sum 41 sound like Iron Maiden?- NO. I know what was said in High Fedelity but ive heard it from various other sources like interview cd's.

I would also recommend you listen to SLF's newer stuff like Tinderbox or Guitar and Drum, different from Inflamable material but good all the same. Each dollar a bullet, Bayruit moon are also quality songs to name only a few.

"Lets see... Stiff Little Fingers have done everything from punk to pop punk to ska to country. Yeah dont see how they could ever have influenced greenday. Nope not one bit. Dumbass."

i never said they didn't influence them. i said i don't think they have much in common to warrant the comparison given in the review. as for the plethora of styles that SLF have touched on, green day resides in one general category and that is pop-punk. they have rarely left that domain. therefore, SLF, a multi-faceted band, shouldn't be considered a great influence on green day, a single domain band's, music.

considering bands of that era, i would say the descendents were a much bigger influence on GD than SLF.

"a harder, yet less talented, clash. not a bad band by any means, just not as good as the clash."

Thats what I think, too... This band is still good, but it just seems like a beefed up Clash, and lacks originality.
