There is no easy way to write this review. Many of you clicked here hoping to read a straight-up bashing of anything Blink-182 related; you won't find it here. I have been a fan of the band for 6 years, and have never wavered even in all their "unpunk" practices. To me, it's the music that matters, not the commercialism behind it. If you write good songs, I will listen to them.

Blink-182 has gone through a metamorphosis, hinted towards through some of the deeper tracks off Take Off Your Pants And Jacket like "Stay Together For The Kids." The band has begun to probe their dark side, and I for one am glad they did. Poop and pee jokes only go so far. This album is as close to a reinvention of sound that Blink-182 could go through without being a wholly different band.

Opening track and first single "Feeling This" has been floating around the internet for some time now, and I know that I laughed the first time I heard it. The whole thing seemed ridiculous - Mark answering every vocal line with an enthusiastic "I'm feelin' it!"? A cowbell breakdown? Tom singing more like Chris Broach then Ben Weasel? Somehow, though, the song stopped being funny in my eyes and I really took to it. It's an innovative track with hooks aplenty, and fewer things are more fun than playing air cowbell in your car.

The album gets heavier immediately with "Obvious," a Tom-sung number with a thick guitar line, reminiscent of Box Car Racer. But this [and many other tracks on this album] succeed where Box Car didn't - these are fully fleshed out and better written, whereas the Box Car CD felt like a bunch of leftover ideas Tom had that Mark rejected. The band seems to be a functioning unit now, and songs like this prove it.

The next standouts come back to back with "Violence" and "Stockholm Syndrome." Both teeter at the brink of insanity, with Travis' drumming driving these songs to places never before seen in this band. Mark's vocals in the bridge of "Stockholm Syndrome" are the best he's ever done, both note-wise and lyrically. The bass and guitar as well as the vocal interplay between Mark and Tom is a perfect balance of blinding rage and focused melody.

One of the songs everyone will be talking about is "The Fallen Interlude." A slightly over 2-minute DJ Shadow-esque number used almost as an intermission between the halves of the album. While I'm sure you'll never hear this live, it's really compelling and well-programmed.

This leads us to "Go," a Mark-sung number that has also been floating around on the internet for the better part of a year. I'd peg this as the probable second single due to the strong vocals and catchy chorus, but the song isn't even 2 minutes long. It's nice to know the band knew when to quit on the song instead of making it more radio-friendly by beating it's chorus into the ground. Hoppus' repeated a capella yells of "I don't wanna know!" are as raw as his vocals have ever been, and show a maturation not present before.

"Easy Target" has an opening riff that reminds me of old Social Distortion, which is ironic since Hoppus references "Mommy's Little Monster" in the chorus. It's simply a really good punk rock song, with no other gimmick. The song then segues into the other track everyone is abuzz over, "All Of This," sung by the Cure's Robert Smith [with the chorus sung by Hoppus and Delonge]. I can't believe the song works as well as it does, but the melancholy ballad is perfect for Smith's voice.

Hoppus contributes another gem in "Here's Your Letter." The straight-ahead song once again showcases his stronger vocals and lyrics than Tom's; one of the only downfalls of this record is that the overwhelming majority of the disc was written by Delonge. While his songs are good, Mark's tracks are easy standouts across the board.

This album has changed Blink-182 from a pop-punk band who had worn out their welcome to a power trio with something worthwhile to say. The instrumentation on here is more lush [with the use of strings, bells, and synthesizers at numerous points], the vocals and lyrics more developed, the genericism is virtually gone. The band could have easily made another cookie-cutter pop-punk album; they've obviously seen how many bands are copying their formula and making a killing at it. But they're better than that, and it shows.

On their self-titled album, Blink-182 wrote good songs. Really, really good songs. And I am listening to and will continue to listen to them. Revoke my punk card if you must; I never wanted it anyway.

One of the most essential albums of the year - the rebirth of a band that many wrote off as long-dead. Look for this to be the start of a promising career in music for Blink-182, assuming you can forget about the fart jokes.

Honestly, I really don't like this album. I love blink 182 (they of course got me into the alternative genres), and I love the thought of them trying to go deeper, but, this album, to me fails miserably. There are a couple of good tracks, but most of it just sound like shit. Feeling This is terrible. The album was a major disappointment, considering TOYPAJ was so good. I wanted to like this album, I really did, but I can't award them the fact of creating a good album just because it was different.

    My Score:

Blink 182's "untitled" CD definetly was a more sophisticated, emotional, and a touch of the darker side of blink. The lyrics were a lot more sentimental, lustful and personal. By listening to the CD you can tell that every aspect was well thought through and somewhat flawless in what Blink was aiming for.

    My Score:

In the current pop-music scene, money can buy you "good" musicians and producers to make your album sound more "artsy" or to give it "more integrity"... This album is a perfect example of that, and it comes across as an attempt to satisfy anxious blink fans and naysayers alike. But it didn't fool this naysayer...

Sure, Green Day used extra musicians, but Billie Joe wrote American Idiot all by himself, he didn't get a hip-hop DJ or hire a trendy drummer to give the album more credibility. Blink 182 was a 3-piece band who at one time wrote the annoying overplayed birth of TV pop-punk anthem "All the Small Things" and despite their talent and dedication I still see the same band, just with a bigger production budget and all the stepping stones any real musician could only hope for.

Good Riddance was a harshly overplayed song, but I doubt you'd ever want anything by Blink 182 as your graduation song...

This album wasm undoubtably shocking the date I bought it to hear - November 18th 2003 (Release date in UK)

At first I was a bit weary but as blink-182 are my favourite band I tried to adapt to liking it. I didn't try very hard and within minutes I loved the album. All of blink-182's albums have been fun and well worthwhile listening to. These last 3/4 albums they have released have had mixed reactions as from my point of view they are different styles.

When people say they love blink-182; ask them, which blink-182. Well I can safely say that I loveall of them and I love every minute I get the chance to listen to them.

On November 30th 2004 my dream is coming true of watching blink-182 live! I am going to the NEC to see them and I can guarentee now that I will love it!!!

    My Score:

For years upon years I have heard bashings on Blinki-182. I have been fans of there's since I can remember. I can still remember hearing M&M for the first time in there CD Chesire Cat and when they followed that with a great CD in Dude Ranch. Up to there, everybody liked Blink-182. They were not sellouts, they were punk rockers at there fullest.

Then came Enema of the State. Blink-182 went from nobodies to somebodies in the world. They became "Sellouts". But if you sit down and listen to Dude Ranch all the way through and Enema of the State all the way through you will hear the same sound almost exactly. The same flavor that made you like Dude Ranch. To me Enema of the State was a great album.

Next was Take off your Pants and Jacket. An album that got mixed reviews. This CD really never took off like Enema did but did more so then Dude Ranch. With songs like Stay Together For The Kids showed some sort of a different style of music coming from Blink something that was heard in the self-titled album.

When Tom and Travis did Box Car Racer it took me aside and made me realize maybe Blink is more then what they are showing. Maybe Tom has something he needs to show us that hasn't been seen yet.

Then comes there Self-Titled Album. It was as poetic as anything I have ever heard from them. With songs like Obvious, Violence, Here's Your Letter really stood out to me. I am also a big fan of I Miss You and Go. I can't change the views of anybody who "thinks" they are "sellouts" but I hope I opened up your eyes a little more.

And for the people that say Travis is god but Mark and Tom suck ass. Well then you wonder what Travis is doing with those guys for now there 3rd CD and fourth with Tom. Kinda interesting. I forgot how punk Travis is. Don't get me wrong, I love Travis but he's just as punk as Tom and Mark are.

    My Score:

Ok after reading a fair few of the opinions and deciding my own, I am sort of split in my views about this album.
At first listen I thought "oh yeah Tom did that box car racer shit didnt he?" - enough said. However I now think this wasnt a fair judgement.

The album really grows on you, and you find the ability to listen to a lot of the songs and notice something different about them each time, not just get stuck with a catchy punk chorus. Although i wouldnt go so far as to say they've matured, I do think they have developed at least some "depth" (without trying to sound too condesending), and ok lets not completely rip it out of them for trying a new style.

Songs like obvious and violence introduced a whole new blink to me, one that i wasnt prepare to shaft along with my taking back sunday album as "emo". The element of surprise was an added bonus, as I found myself being, dare I say it, touched on the first listen of Stockholm Syndrome after nearly hurling as i read of a review of it which described the "haunting war letter to a melodic piano background" before actually listening to the song.

As for actually instrument playing, well it's become amazing. Travis truly is a top class drummer and Mark and Tom seem to be handeling their guitars better than ever.

Ok so it's different, compare it too dude ranch or even enema of the state and it could be a different band (bar the instantly recognisable vocals of Tom Delonge) this doesnt make it a bad album. Put a different band name on the cover and this would probably be praised as a "breakthrough in contempary emo". It's not. It's just good music from a good band.

And to all those people who critisize Blink 182 for being "pop-punk", "sellouts" or brand them as something else cliched - look back to your roots. At least some punk bands did this as Blink inspiration is heard in a large number of bands featured on this website.

There. Now go rip this comment to shreds

Who cares what the motives were. Robert Smith is talented and automatically gives Blink some cred with a band that were at the forefront of a scene that shaped what emo is today. If the album is good, let it be good. Don't get into selling out and shit. I stick with my bands and Blink was there from the start. Mainstream can be just as good as stuff in the underground. For those of you that say this CD sucks and that Blink has sold out I would like to ask you this, Have you heard any other song besides "feeling this" from this CD? Because that, I would say, is the weakest song on the CD. Pick it up and listen to it. I know some of you will still hate it cuz its not cool to like Blink. in your rebuttal you basically acknowledged that, in the underground, there are still amazing punk rock bands who espouse DIY ethics. however, you also said that no one lives by punk ideals anymore.

    heheh, aren't we redundant...

Anyways, first of all, that's just my opinion so slag off. When i said punk was dead i meant that what i made punk out to be, its ideals and lessons, That's what's dead, beacause to me, these ideals are not prevailent in the newer bands that are getting recognition. I'm sure there is plenty of talent undergroud, as a matter of fact i know so, all be it the montreal scene isn't as friutful as other cities, but it's still there. Unfortunately the streets are mainly occupied by punk posing as "anarchists" when they don't even know what the fuck anarchy really means, but i digress. Speaking of the montreal scene, i suggest u search out bands like "les vulgaires machines" and "les cowboys fringants" for a taste of la belle province, or for u monolingual american folk check out "disgruntled" for a taste of my local underground... -sigh- i'm ranting again.

Anyways, i wanna ask mr. "Funk's not Dead" to be more accepting of other people's opinions before persecuting them for what they think, where i come from we call them "tapettes"

Straight up, i'm gonna say that travis is a fucking kikass drummer and i hold him in very high regard as a musical powerhouse. Anyways, seeing as how all of u people are on here either to defend your punk cred, plug ur fave band, or just be an asshole, i figure'd i'd follow suit. It is in my opinion that PUNK IS DEAD! it has degenerated into a sorry nostalgia act for the socially accepted, pseudo-rebellious, credit card packing children of todays united states of america. I believe that "punk" (and i am aware of the taboo-osity of putting quotaiton marks around that word) yes, "punk" quite simply means thinking for urself, questioning authority and acceptance and tolerance for all walks of life. Why are we persecuting these casualtys of common american greed, all of you people are no better than they are coming on here. I come to this site to read up on bands i like, yeah, i liked blink in grade 8, i listened to them and greenday and the offspring and that kinda stuff, but i never called them "punk" bands. I really only identified with it when i started listening to bad religion. Damn, i'm rambling, oh well, this album is okay for pop-punk, kinda pretentious, kinda repetative, but at least it's not the same as the last album. Anyways, let's stop the hatin'! and start lovin' one another! If the whatever "punks" left in this world fight and bicker amoungst themselves then it's the enemy (whoever that is) that wins... travis still kiks

Listen to Justin Timberlake instead, hes got better lyrics, and is cuter.

Oh, and the fuck with the list of bands blink is better then, it will be a miserable day when blink is better then Co&Ca. Unless you gauge musical talent by how derivative and boring they are. To think, only took em like 6 albums to put out a "decent" one, and all the othe rbands you listed pretty topped this one on there first shot.

"be punk! dress like us!" rancid sings songs about punk topics like politics, sticking up for yourself, unity, etc. rancid doesn't have to pretend to be punk cus they are. blink really never changed their sound, true, but they've been all about image the whole fucking time, and they've always sucked."

Just off the top of my head, I can't think of any blink songs that use the word "punk" and while I could easily be proven wrong on that point, they certainly don't use the word "90%" of the time. And talk all you want about Blink's lyrics, but the Clash still had songs like "Train in Vain." And the Clash is punk as fuck. Besides, the origins of punk were never rooted in politics. Have you heard The Ramones?

Don't get me wrong, I think of Rancid as definetly being punk...even though, by the standards of most, they sold out (I never quite bought into that theory though). But just making things up about Blink...well thats just dumb. I mean, I could think of a lot of better reasons, that you could justify with a good argument of why Blink "isn't punk." And none of them involve the occurance of the word "punk" in their lyrics.

I think Tom McClintock is the man - he seems to know more about what he's doing than anyone else. I'd vote for him and I'd vote for Hilary Clinton if she ever ran for president.
