Anti- Records -- One Day as a Lion
Register to Vote: Rock the Vote, powered by Credo Mobile

I remember the time when the Foo Fighters released this album, the Colour and the Shape, as the time when prevailing modern alternative rock began its disintegration into the scrum of rap-metal, numetal, lots of Creed and lots of Korn. Joining these four horsemen of the modern rock apocalypse were the leftovers from the Lilith Fair (Jewel), and some catchy but annoying, adult-contemporary songs like "Walking on the Sun," "Torn" and "Semi-Charmed Life."

The hell that was modern alternative rock back then, I guess in retrospect, made me appreciate this album, The Colour and the Shape, a whole lot more. Definitely one of the best CD's to come out in the latter 1990's, this album is strong power-pop at its best.

Riffs and catchy melodies permeate every song on this album, especially on "Monkey Wrench," "Enough Space," "Wind Up" and a cute love song called "Up in Arms." Some youthful punk energy can also be found in "Monkey Wrench" and "Up in Arms," as reflected from Dave Grohl's days in D.C. hardcore band Scream. "Hey, Johnny Park" trods itself along as an emotional monster dirge. On "Enough Space" Dave unleashes earwax-building, reach-for-the-Q-tip-screaming that rivals any of today's numetal contemporaries.

A triumphant anthem for the ages, "My Hero" has possibly shows some of the best and strongest drumming parts ever put to tape by a particularly skilled drummer in his own right, singer-guitarist Dave Grohl. In fact "My Hero" was my own personal 1990's version of Queen's "We Will Rock You."

The superhit of this album (and probably for the Foo Fighters career) is "Everlong." "Everlong," now a long running staple on some radio stations, builds itself on short riff attacks alongside drumming heavy on the snare or cymbal to create a powerful love ballad.

For those touchy, feely types out there, "Walking After You" is a slow, soft acoustic somber song beautifully done to reflect true devotion and love loss--but not in a dorky, emo, Chris Carraba kind of way.

So in comparison: There was the maelstrom of shit that hit radio and MTV in 1997. And then there was the quality guitar-driven and highly structured songwriting of The Colour and the Shape which essentially redeemed my faith in alternative rock for several years after until a band called Staind pretty much shattered it into so many microscopic pieces, pretty much the size of several lines of coke that these stupid numetal bands need to do to ease their "pain and suffering."

This album may not have redeemed modern alternative rock of today, but it sure proves to be an instant rock classic today, and even an influence among indie pop bands like the Get Up Kids, who cited the Foo Fighters among a list of bands they wanted to tour with.

If you want great power-pop and super-charged alternative rock, then you should definitely get this one. Highly recommended.

what upsets me is that people are more concerned with labelling the music than actually giving the substance credit. fuck whether or not its punk in your opinion, because your opinion didn't influence the creative process behind any of the music you judge anyway.

*news flash* for all of you who think dave grohl is god, ill have you know that he helped my mom through labor, and saved the baby that would have otherwise been still born. thank you dave grohl, you wonderful mountain of a man.

Yeah, way back then Bands like Hüsker Dü etc were severely linked to the punk scenes, but times have changed and alternative Music has simply turned to mtv marketing shit. The same happened to New Wave when Bands like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet made it cheesy and unexciting. So what the hack you wanted to say with that crap

wow...for everybody that is an alternative music listener the 3 chord argument seems to be the one, that their little foo fighters - nirvana brains seem to breed out. Hm, why is a band like Nomeans no that includes jazzy structures in their songs punk. Would you dare to say that Turbo ACs play 3 chords or do you really think that AFI, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, One Man Army etc. are bad musicians or do have very simple structures. Its not about arguing who has more skills (some punk bands have more but others dont, but hey who the fuck cares).
Its very simple: Foo Fighters are not punk. They may be brilliant musicians, but hey Phil Collins is also a good musician. Is he punk. And you still are a MTV Kid dumbass.

PS: I think Anti Flag is punk, but i think they are a lil bit boring. But you are Mr. Alternative I know it all.

Too bad punk already is and hardcore seems to be well on its way.. its not 1992 anymore.. there isnt much saving left.. the only thing we can hope for is for it to die out of mainstream soon so it will go back to not being that much of a joke.

This is not about 3 chords, but its all about roughness, guts and independence and not about 3 chords. Fans of mainstream rock, that try to hide their MTV alt.com preference often have the argument, that the musical skills of the bands are better. If you compare a band like the International Noise Conspiracy or the skills of a band like AFi (wether you like em or not) etc... They are excellent musicians, but they still have some roughness and guts and they are punk in a more or less clear way. This is not, its just alternative like emo has nothing to do with punk and metalcore has not very much in common with hardcore (just bad played metal in my opinion). If anyone can review anything under the label punk, then some might find that o.k. I personally dont, cos then just name this site www.rocknews.com. Punkrock and Hardcore have to be elitist in some way cos if not, they will end up as another style of alternative music without power and attitude.

It seems kind of stupid for someone to complain about simple music on a punk site. And Nirvana were to origianl, they just spoke very openly about their influences but did not sound to much like any of them.

For all those little bitch "punk rock elists" out there, my next review will be about something 'punk.'

Even though I think what Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters have done is pretty much punk rock to me. Let me elaborate:

    1. Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters made records on their own terms, often scrapping and re-recording whole songs at will without major label intervention.

    2. Dave Grohl owns his own imprint, Roswell Records, and owns the rights to all Foo albums (paying RCA a distribution fee to release them). The majors play ball with the Foos, instead of the other way around.

    3. Dave Grohl obviously uses some of the profits to support the Black Cat, a D.C. area punk venue.

    4. Dave Grohl's drumming prowess was noticed by Kurt Cobain from his days in super D.C. hardcore band Scream.

So if these reasons aren't "punk rock" enough for you three-chord zealots, well then, you're as dense as the "Moron Brothers" Fat Mike loves to sing about.

Pat Smear was cool, Everlong was a good song. Other than that, the Foo Fighters are forgettable, this album was as good as it got for them I think. I think the late nineties was just a bad time for music, especially for someone without internet (or otherwise) access to bands not played on MTV or the radio. Thank god that's over.

It's getting pretty old when people say that people like Nirvana only because everyone else does. Nirvana was a great band and believe it or not, they had tons of fans way before Kurt died. Though people who say stuff like that were probably still in kindergarten in '94. Also, listen to more obscure Nirvana songs like Talk To Me, Moist Vagina and If You Must and then tell me they sucked or weren't "punk".
