Given the members involved, I was really surprised there wasn’t more press or, well, any information at all about this band. In fact, I didn’t even know anything about this EP until a day or two before it was released. Anyways, for those who don’t know, The Falcon is a Chicago punk supergroup of sorts featuring Brendan Kelly from the Lawrence Arms on vocals and guitar, Neil Hennessey from the same band on drums, Dan Andriano from the Alkaline Trio on bass, and Todd Mohney formerly of Rise Against (for their best album) on guitar.

All that aside though, how does it sound? Well, pretty much what you would expect given the members involved. Think the fastest and grittiest Brendan contributions to the Larry Arms or the Broadways alongside Alkaline Trio bass lines and the occasional acoustic guitar. There also seems to be a more straightforward lyrical approach, with no real literary references here. That doesn’t mean they’ve taken a turn for a worse though, as he’s still got some great lines in here. The standouts for me would be the first and last tracks, but would hardly consider the three in between to be filler. So yeah, it sounds awesome, just nothing terribly original, but I don’t really think that’s what they were going for here. The only major problem I have with the EP is the understandably uneven/poor production. As the liner notes state, it was “hilariously recorded for zero dollars.” So hey, can’t really blame them for that. Also, at 12 minutes, it’s a bit on the short side, but given the type of music that this is, it doesn’t really need to be longer.

So is it worth your money? If you’re a big Lawrence Arms fan, definitely; just don’t expect another Greatest Story Ever Told / Apathy and Exhaustion caliber album. If you aren’t a fan, shame on you, and this probably isn’t gonna win you over. For the rest of us though, it will tide us over until the upcoming Larry Arms B-sides album and, hopefully, new full-length. I’m not sure if The Falcon plans to record more, but I won’t be complaining if they do. Let’s just hope they manage to afford some better production.

Although the recording is shit, I think it compliments this ep so much. Brendan's vocals sound the best on this release IMO. It's just so fucking raw.

the only reason i'm not giving this a perfect score is because i wish it was longer.

Totally awesome EP. I personally love the production of the album... Brendans voice sounds fucking brutal (No, not metalcore style brutal, wankers) and raw on a couple of these songs. I love it. Sounds better than heavily produced Larry Arms stuff I think

This is what punk was before the Mary Kate & Ashley set grew up and started being a major influence in music.

If you visit the site's website at www.thefalconisbiggerthanjesus.com you'll read all about how the EP was recorded and why the random "Woo hoos" and screeching couldn't be removed from the tracks once they were put in - personally I rather like it, especially the first "WOOO HOOO" on track 1. You can tell the musicians are really just having a lot of fun. And musicians who aren't having fun anymore make crappy music.

    My Score:

I just got this in the mail with None More Black's new EP (which I'm going to give a perfect 10 to), and some of it sounds like what Brendan Kelly singing for Against Me would sound like. The rest of it sounds like The Lawrence Arms' more straight and to the point songs (On With the Show, Necrotism: Decanting The Insalubrious, Minute, etc.). As a huge Lawrence Arms fan, I'm more into the latter, but I wasn't really into the random "Woohoo's" and that weird buzzing sound in one of the tracks. Oh well. It's still great.

It's amazing how many better bands the members of Rise Against are in a side projects. I mean, if every sideproject you are in is better than your main band, then it's time to break up the main band.
88 Fingers Louie was a baguhzillion times better than Rise Against and all these little projects are sounding pretty promising too. Rise Against is just so average and that new album licked salty nuts.

Well, I can't entirely agree with this review. First off, his complaints about the lack of proper marketing seems awfully silly. All I ever read on this site is about how bands are over-hyped and not DIY. My understanding is that this band is that it's made up of friends and released by a friend. This site should change it's name to damnedifyoudo.org. I'm actually relieved that band members of this stature are still "keeping it real." And 12 minutes of music is more than enough for the 5 bucks this cost me...5 stars!

Apathy was the best album of 2003 IMO Barkley. i think weve had this convo before.

This ep represents all that is being missed by 'the kids' these days and what is missing in general from today's 'punk rock'. its raw, energetic, in your face punk. this is what attracted me to the genre way back in 93 when i borrowed my older sisters minor threat out of step tape, and again when i bought the 3rd cd i ever owned , and out come the wolves.

kids today will say 'this sucks, its so sloppy, i really think they need to wear makeup and do the kooky dance and scream more about girls and cutting/dying/bleeding/choking on dick. '

when i go to shows nwo, which is rare cuz i feel embarassed being the only 24 hanging arond a bunch of chicks who could get me arrested for beign a creep, i just stare in disgust. fasion/no moshing/safe/lame. was it liek that 5/6 years ago? i dont' remember it beign like that.

this is what is missing. in 13 minutes the falcon completely reminded me what punk can be like still and why i still listen to this music.

I don't think a raw sound is endemic to Chicago at all. I think it's part of the core of the whole punk/DIY/hardcore thing. I wouldn't make the lofty claim that Chicago (or any one city) holds some sort of monopoly on understanding the warmth and honesty that in the raw recordings can have.

Chicago bands perfer to have a rawer edge then spending a million dollars and putting together some over produced record. I'd take a underproduced album anyday over overproduced.

Much more honest at least as a recording....I think some people outside of Chicago have a hard time understanding this.
