I love punk rock. I love the do-it-yourself ethic, the anti-establishment mentality, the self-sustaining independence. What I don't like is the mentality that if you listen to punk, you must confine yourself to the bands that use three chords or less. So while the fashion punks in their denim, leather, and mohawks spit at an act such as Conor Oberst's Bright Eyes, it's their loss. Oberst has always seemed a staple of DIY; from 4-track recording in basements to a side project (the Desaparecidos) dedicated to attacking consumerism and the expansion of big business. This year Oberst releases two albums, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Digital Ash In A Digital Urn. While the two albums are seperate releases, I am doing it all in one review to compare and contrast the releases.

The decision to release two albums was smart. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning follows Conor's more traditional folk style, whether it be plucking away alone on an acoustic guitar or singing along with guest vocalist Emmylou Harris. Digital Ash In A Digital Urn was previewed as more "dancy, beat-oriented" music, which terrified me; I absolutely loathe the revival of the 80's dance wave that has infected the underground music scene. Fortunately, each album offers an array of surprises: some good, and some bad.

I'm Wide Awake... starts off with the now traditional spoken word introduction. While it works at first, for those of us that have enjoyed Bright Eyes in the past, this seems almost forced; a neccessary introduction to one of his albums. However, once the music picks up, it's back to the good old days of soft and slow sing-a-longs. "We Are Nowhere And It's Now" and "Train Under Water" are strong examples of what Conor offered on 2001's Lifted... For those old-time fans who want the quivering, more emotive qualities of Fevers And Mirrors, "Landlocked Blues" and "Poison Oak" offer the more metaphorical stylings Oberst seems to have departed from lately.

The only real fault of this album is that it seems to be watered-down Bright Eyes for the masses. Not until the aforementioned "Blues" and "Oak" does the album offer some dynamite tracks that can rival classics such as "Arienette;" "Poison Oak" is easily my favorite track, and a perfect drunken singalong (if you're into that sort of thing). The record's finale borrows from Beethoven's ninth, the massive and marching "Road To Joy," an anti-war declaration of the problems in modern America. While the vocals of the majority of the record have seemed restrained and produced, Conor finally lets loose at the end of the album when the Saddle Creek orchestra explodes, lead by his call, "Well I could have been a famous singer / if I had someone else's voice / but failure's always sounded better / let's fuck it up boys / make some noise!"

Now that we've got standard Bright Eyes covered, forget everything you've ever known about the group except for the beat-hinted track "Lover I Don't Have To Love," from 2001's Lifted... The introduction to Digital Ash In A Digital Urn is "Time Code," consisting of heavy breathing, muffled beats and ambient noises. When the echoed vocals start, the lyrics are more abstract than usual: "Death data intrigue / anthill law / encoded arc / our common cause / drink liquid clocks / til I see God / crystal display / can't turn it off."

Then, heavy beats and I'm reminded of a quieter Nine Inch Nails. While this is probably the most radical departure, it sets up a good pace for the rest of the album. The next two songs, "Gold Mine Gutted" and "Arc Of Time," are just fantastic, showing quite a bit of potential. The album carries on with this same tone - some dark songs, some light, but for the most part, really strong.

"I Believe In Sympathy" is hard to grasp at first, but the ending of the song really makes up for it. Unfortunately, the next two tracks, "Devil In The Details" and "Ship In A Bottle" show the new endeavour isn't all golden - I find myself skipping these more than I do listening to them all the way through. Surprisingly, the reason is not necessarily the music, but rather the writing - it's childish and amateur, something that Oberst is usually far above. "Light Pollution" rescues the disc as my favorite track, an ode to a friend who fought the system and lost. Everything about this song just clicks. The record concludes with "Easy Lucky Free," a pensive and epic track that seems to follow Oberst's train of thought about the changing times; "Don't be a criminal in this police state / you better shop and eat and procreate / you've got vacation days / and you might escape / to a condo on the coast."

Both of these records are strong. I'd put Digital above Morning, simply because it shows Oberst progressing as an artist both lyrically and musically. Unfortunately each of these albums has at least one track that I'd classify as filler - something that I'd never associate with Bright Eyes previously. While the two styles differ enough to merit two different releases, if Oberst had packaged the best songs from each of the two CDs together on one disc, it would easily see the top of many "Best of '05" lists.

This would be hilarious, if some weren't so serious. The poor schmuck, who types for shit, basically says Oberst is a genius and a fuckup. And if he doesn't stop self-medicating himself he is gonna lose it. Chad on Flagpole hit's the nail on the head...post-Dylan landscape of songwriters working their way into the history books, Conor Oberst has a clear and unmistakable lead; any more stumbles like this, though, and he can count himself out of the race.

Conor Oberst knows a hole in the ground when he sees one, but clouds of ethanol pecludes the mastery of an art form. Poetically challenged and musical adriot, he desperately attempts to secure the brass ring. with a heart og gold and beguiling innocence (ha!) he marches forward. Some day he'll get off his slacker ass and become the artist he portends to be. in the interim, it just goes to show that you can be a pretntious digital ass in a digital urinal. yup, it's is sad.

Instead, there should be a "generic comment section" that has just one comment for each review. For established artists with any sort of fanbase "This band sucks" will suffice, and for any band that is little known, "This band rules" would be enough. Then people can stop wasting their time trying to be clever on here and trying to get those internet high-5s they're all looking for.

Dude that's like, by far, one of his most stripped-down acoustic songs. Touch I can see but definitely not If Winter Ends. It's a lot more like a song such as Pull My Hair.

I don't know if Digital Ash in a Digital Urn can be said to be this great departure for Bright Eyes; if anything it's reminiscent of older Bright Eyes. These songs remind me a hell of a lot of Letting off the Happiness (If Winter Ends, Touch), just more sophisticated. And Bright Eyes has always used samples in its music, even in Lifted, so that's not any different.
In any case, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning is a lot more solid than Lifted, which had some pretty shitty tracks.

Say what you want, but Conor Oberst is honest. Honesty is lacking so much in music these days, and he has it. I listen to this album, and I hear fucking heart. He is not throwing together bullshit lyrics he knows will sound good over certain chords, he is analyzing his life, the world around him, and on top of that, doing it in an incredibly intelligent and poetic way. These lyrics are the kind that you can listen to 15 times and not understand what he's trying to say until the 15th listen.... there are hidden messages and subtleties that most bands could only dream of coming up with.

I don't mind the spoken word intro. The first song is amazing and while the story about the plane crash doesn't really make sense or fit into the song, it's not just bullshit I have to skip through to get to the actual song like on Fevers and Mirrors or Lifted...

In conclusion, this shit is amazing. With the possible exception of "Another Traveling Song".

His records are distributed by a major label and can be purchased at walmart and bestbuy. There is nothing wrong with that. He wants as many people as possible to hear/buy his record. However, It's obviously not DIY. I'm not denying that he has ethics. If everyone treated music like he does, as a personal and expressive art form instead of a career, music as a whole would greatly become better.

Refuse to pay money to get more attention on the radio and MTV. Do everything in your power not to play CC venues, and speak out against them, too. Turn down multi-million dollar contracts and buyouts from various major labels.

What about that is not DIY? Should he be screen printing his own t-shirts and living on a street corner?

Whether you like the guy's music or not, you have to give Oberst and the rest of Saddle Creek credit for making success happen on their own terms without forgetting what they stand for. It's so easy to cash in and make an quick buck these days, especially with the kind of money top shelf indie rock artists are being offered these days to jump up.

    for christ's sake.

scott... there are so many bands with similar lyrics and music that you do like. I think it hits too close to home. I honestly don't love the man like some, but I acknowledge that he pens some nice music.

    My Score:

Fair review. I don't think "I'm Wide Awake" is watered down at all, just more focused and less pretentious. It's a fantastic record, minus the intro. Oberst can't seem to keep himself from doing that.

To me, "Digital Ash" is inconsistent and awkward, with a few good songs. I can see how a person might like it more, though.

Conor Oberst is more punk rock than 95% of artists that call themselves that today. He's been blacklisted by Clear Channel for speaking out against them, including once at a televised CC event for MTV2. There's also a searing anti-Bush track called "When The President Talks To God" that's available for free through Itunes as of today from what I hear.

Pretty funny, since I think Conor looks like Trent's better looking younger brother...

i really dig wide awake (spoken word intro aside), but digital ash is just meh... i'm not saying it's terrible but it's not on my rotation and probably won't be unless some odd mood strikes me.

Someone should review the new Ghetto Boys album. Bushwick Bill is 1000x punker than Conor Oberst.

    My Score:

Digital Ash has it's high poiints and low points, but "Take It Easy" (Love Nothing) is, in my mind, an early contender for best song of 2005.

Landlocked Blues is the reason that some people have been calling Conor "this generation's Dylan." It's just one of the best songs I've heard in a while.

I don't mean to overheap praise, I don't think he's a Dylan by any means, but I can see the reason why some reviewers have been saying it.

i thought this was a pretty solid review considering everyone seems to have very strong opinions one way or the other on bright eyes.
...like previously mentioned, i wouldn't recommend going into the politics of punk because that debate can create even more backlash than mr. oberst himself.
"poison oak" is probably one of my personal favorites also.

score is for wide awake... that cd is great, although not as good as Lifted, it's still my early choice for cd of the year... this is just temporary however because there are some kick ass releases coming up...

digital ash hasn't really done it for me... i haven't listened to it much though, sinc ei'm going to see the wide awake show in a few days and have been busy listening to it...

and about the clear channel comment... connor trys not to tour in cc venues whenever possible... he was attacked a few years back at the shortlist prze show for using his set to speak out against clear channel....

also, i don't see how DIY ethic applies to Conor and Saddle Creek...aren't they distributed by a caroline which is owned by a major and his tour in clear channel venues. Good stuff regardless and I'll be picking one of these up but just thought I'd bring that up. Confirm/deny?

I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning had no filler as far as I'm concerned. You didn't even touch on the most amazing track, "First Day of My Life". I enjoyed this just as much as "Lifted...". And I haven't heard anything from Digital Ash apart from the single, which is amazing.

"I love punk rock. I love the do-it-yourself ethic, the anti-establishment mentality, the self-sustaining independence. What I don't like is the mentality that if you listen to punk, you must confine yourself to the bands that use three chords or less."

no more saying stuff like this. 1 out of 5 "not punk but still good" album reviews start with this. Its irritating and obvious. Lets just consdier it unspoken.
