All this talk about trilogies lately has had me thinking about this new album, which represents the third of the Vagrant-era Alkaline Trio releases. From observation of trilogies like the Matrix, Indiana Jones and that other one with the wookies, there is a dawning realization that there is a formula to follow in developing an effective trilogy

The first should stand alone, because the opportunity to make a second is not always afforded. When you get to the next one however, it's fairly certain that a third will follow so you may be tempted to play with the formula a little. Sometimes - but rarely - this can be good, like Empire Strikes Back; other times, it can be disappointing: The Matrix Reloaded, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Good Mourning certainly fall into the latter category.

Thankfully, you can still redeem yourself with a strong third showing. The Last Crusade was so good that we were willing to forgive Temple of Doom, and the same can be said about Crimson, a record that successfully appropriates all the best ideas of From Here To Infirmary and Good Mourning while handily disposing of any of the cruft.

But before discussing Crimson, a look back at the previous two entries may be in order. From Here To Infirmary kept some of the old band, but went a decidedly pop-punk route and confined almost all of the darkness to the lyrics all the while producing some of their catchiest material to date. “Private Eye,” “Bloodied Up” and “Stupid Kid” were terrific songs, but only if you were willing to forgive the musical departure.

The followup did not succeed as well, however; Good Mourning, while blessed with a few decent tracks, fell victim to weak production, frail vocals and uneven songwriting. It was passable, but certainly not to the standard of previous efforts and disappointed a many, myself included.

So while the opening salvo of previous records has been replaced with a reverb-heavy piano sequence, by the time “Time To Waste” ends, it seems perfectly placed and possesses plenty of that memorable sound and fury. It moves seemlessly into “The Poison,” which delivers a newly invigorated Dan Andriano and his best vocal performance since Maybe I'll Catch Fire.

As “Burn” begins with its heavily processed guitars, one could dread the return of the Jerry Finn-overproduction that plagued Good Mourning, but instead as the song progresses, it seems right for the song particularly when combined with a particularly strong bridge -- complete with key change -- which delivers the hook and seals the deal for the second single.

“Dethbed” is among the best songs on the record and organically incorporated dueling vocals from both Skiba and Andriano. The return of “Sadie” from the BYO split seems a little disappointing, but its Damned-meets-Misfits moodiness and anthemic chorus has it fit so well into the track sequence that it seems to belong better here than even on the split. “Fall Victim,” “Your Neck” and “I Was a Prayer” both certainly see the band returning to the pop-punk of Infirmary while “Back To Hell” sounds like a slightly uptempo B-side from Catch Fire. All in all, Crimson represents a uniformly strong showing of melodies and they are finally coupled with production worthy of the material.

The band does manage to evolve lyrically as well with the rather unpleasant image of a canine and some razor blades replaced with a far more abstract focus, coaching tales of binge drinking and depression with quasi-gothic imagery which reveals everything but commits to nothing. (Suffice to say, the poor dog certainly fares better on Crimson.)

With Crimson, Alkaline Trio has written the album most bands try to write their entire careers; one that wonderfully punctuates their trilogy of major releases and produces a perfectly accessible record that manages to do so without abandoning anything. The record that synthesizes all the bite and energy of songs that debuted to empty halls and brings it to the stage of their musical career defined by headlining tours and Hot Topic singles. A welcome return to form, and a record that will both win back old fans and win new ones.

This is a great album. I hated fhtI and good mourning, and I was luke warm on MIWCF. This is thier best album since Goddammit

Wow. This album has renewed my love for the Trio. I would honestly rank this as a close second in Alk3's catalog, right after MICF but right before Goddamnit. Matt's songs are top-notch for the most part, and this has some of Dan's best work. The weakest track is probably "Settle for Satin," and that is still a good track. Great album.

It's frustrating reading the comments below because most people seem to hate this album because it is different. These same people would hate the album had it just been another Goddamnit or Maybe I'll Catch Fire. No one wants a band to become static. It should grow up, and that is what Alkaline trio is starting to do. They are beginning to shed their punk skin and giving a little more focus to the music. They have always had witty lyrics (although I do agree that some of them are quite terrible at the same time), but the music has never changed. I was surprised by the piano at the beginning of Time to Waste, and even more surprised by The Poison, which is like nothing done they have done before. But as the album progressed, it became more apparent to me that this departure from the norm was welcome, especially after Good Mourning. The harmonies between Skiba and Adriano provide a chilling melodic sound that had been lacking in previous efforts. Overall, the album has rekindled some of the love I once had for Alkaline Trio but had been lost due to little variety.

Not sure if anyone has pointed this out, because I got sick of reading the comments when they were reduced to discussions about wheather or not "wookie" should be capitalized. But in response to some people cringing at the poor songwriting on Crimson ("drive yourself insane tonight"; "blowing you a kiss") the Trio has always had lyrics that, when read on paper, are pretty cringe-worthy. Examples:

"The other cops call you fatso"

"I'd love to rub your back"

"Sing you to coma so to speak"

"Something sharp to tear into my insides and bleed out all this pain"

"Tuck me in to bed with snakes"

"You were like a toilet bowl at the end of a rainbow" etc.

Alkaline Trio has always had its fair share of corniness, which I think makes them a much more honest and easily accessible band. Now, I do agree that their songwriting (especially Matt's) is not up to par on this album, but I don't think "corniness" is a factor. Matt and Dan's vocals are both poppily touched up from what they actually sound like, which is disappointing. And musically, they are straying much more from the Trio we used to know.

However, if you take this album on its own, without thinking back to the Asian Man days, it's a good record. As are all Trio albums. As far as bands go, they've had a nearly spotless career.

And to whoever said Dan's songs on Maybe I'll Catch Fire are among the worst Trio songs ever, I couldn't disagree more.

the songs dont vary much, but their greatness surpasses

yeah...the guy below me is right....alk 3 need vary up their sound more...maybe use some horns, have some rap sections, and maybe have some guy screaming on certain parts of the songs.

    My Score:

Crimson is a fantastic album,I havent stopped listening to it since i bought it. The songs are produced very well, there isnt a weak track on it. It is better than Good Mourning, but only just. And for Godammit-that album is poor, one of the worst in my collection.

This album is awesome and i am on my way to see them in a couple of months

loving the mix of dan and matt as well as the paino sections and the once again cringe inducing lyrics

if i had to give a bad point it would be the use of two guitars in a three pice, i have no idea why but that really gets to me

Yes alkaline trio have changed but its something that all bands do or it would get boring, nevertheless i think that they could have included some more "rough" sounding songs like the amazing cringe and i lied my face off

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, October 7, 2005 at 9:22 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

This album is so fukin awsum! To the person who insists that the lyrics aren't clever, maybe you should listen a little more carefully.. don't bother rating and reviewing an album unless you know what you are talking about! I have been listening to this CD on repeat ever since it came out and the lyrics are well though-out! Also, someone said this album is gothic.. I'm not sure if you've noticed yet or not but the Alkaline Trio's genre is quite morbid. Perhaps you should revisit your CD collection, how did this end up in your possesion? It doesn't sound like it would be your style at all!
More to the point, if anything I think this album has a 'happier' feel to it than the others. I mean, it's all still about death and shit but the music is a bit 'cheerier' if that's at all possible for these guys! I dunno. These guys are awsum.. there's no better! They have wikid lyrics and the music underneath it is full of force.. it just 'gets' you.
    Hope that makes sense!

I completely agree with the guy below that said Derek went overboard with the high-hat. I think it's supposed to sound like scissors or something, but it just sounds stupid. There are a couple gems on this album: Mercy Me and Poison, but all in all the music is slow, the lyrics aren't clever or personal--they're mostly just gothic.

I think when they dropped glenn porter for mike flumme or something like that they went downhill. Noone likes alklaine trio more than me and while i enjoy crimson it just doesnt cut it for alkaline trio if they went back to asian man records it would be a godsend

Reviews are stupid. It's all the author's opinion. If we could somehow kill everyone that used opinion and keep everyone that told exactly, or as close as humanly possilbe, how the music was we'd be fine. Then everyone would know,. from the review, if they would enjoy the CD. Does it make sense for someone who likes Yellowcard or Senses Fail or Fall Silent to review Alkaline Trio? (:As an example: Fuck off with the accusing me of accusing you stereotype). I realize it's impossiible to tell it how it is and let the people judge, but what would life be without something to strive for?

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, June 16, 2005 at 7:15 AM (EDT)

I respect everyone's opinion but as a long time Alkaline Trio fan I must say that the imagery they produce with their lyrics is their selling point. I have only heard the first track off their new album, which I will buy when I have to stop paying bills, but "shakin like a dog shittin razor blades" and the style with which it is said deserves more than being used in the low end of a comparison.

I agree with the previous comment. Good mourning was a sweet album. Everyone seems to rip on it but i thought it was kinda raw and more punk...especially compared to crimson. There are some awesome punk songs on good mourning....fatally yours, donner party, continental..... Sure skiba's voice was raspy and perhaps overproduced to compensate for this...but as a whole good mourning was much less produced than crimson. I have to really like crimson after a few weeks but when i put in good mourning or FHTI they really rock in comparison. The song your neck has really grown on me...its kinda like a modern misfits song.

Posted by whatchokesbegin on 2005-06-11 01:21:09

Nice review. It's hard to rate this album, though. It's not their best but I can't call it their worst.

Also, I must be the only one in this world who thinks that Good Mourning was not their worst album. In fact, it's one of my absolute favorites. The anti-Good Mourning bandwagon really has no basis in real life and is basically false. It's better than Crimson for the most part.

Here is the deal with their older stuff:

It was original, it was fun and it was pretty fast.

However, the truth is, it was pretty bad at times. The vocals weren't very good and they lyrics often seemed forced and sort of stupid. Granted, I love and own all of their records. But their last few albums make up for their lack of "punk" ness ( or whatever you fools call it) of previous records with great melodies, much improved vocals and pretty awesome lyrics, not to mention memorable music. It's not called selling-out, it's called change. It happens and you have to get used to it. Some bands become terrible and some are just good because of who they are. Alkaline Trio belongs in the second group.

This album is overproduced compared to earlier efforts, but I have yet to regret purchasing an Alkaline Trio album and I still believe that they have gotten better with time. Not everyone stays perfect forever. So far, these guys have done a great job.

Although I sort of wish they would do away with the makeup.

this is their worst album... aka... even if you here resemblances of their old albums they are just ripping themselves off.... they need to go back to their old producer
best ever was the hwm split, the sound was simply amazing and the songwriting was ak3 at their peak...

p.s. matrix reloaded was awesome, revolutions was the one that bit

    My Score:

I have to say while this isn't "maybe i'll catch fire" this album is great, it really shows how they've grown up and how even with the change of musical stylings the lyrics remain dark with most songs. I think that's what this band origionally set out to do is to take really dark shit and scream it in a light way (IE: radio, stupid kid, this could be love, continental, prevent this tradgedy, and mercy me) and as for someone in here saying "there's no way they can reproduce the effects in concert" i can recreate them on a 120 dollar amp and i know they can because i saw them the opening night of their tour and i was even shocked when they played burn and it sounded so much like the album version, and in closing this album may not be their best but it is at least in the top 3 for me, and i think this album is proof that punks grow up fall in love and fall apart just like everyone.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 4, 2005 at 8:33 PM (EDT)

ok...so this is how i feel...im not just gonna listen them...gotta backup your reasons..so thats what im gonna do..and now that i try to rank the cds, i really cant, so im just gonna show my opinion per cd

Goddamnit...got some classics, begins to show who alkaline trio really is and what they will become

Maybe I'll Catch Fire-great cd, loved madam me and radio, songs kinda blend in, but at the same time..their is also standouts...a 7-8.5/10

Self titled-meh, didnt like this that much, had a few good songs, and held some classics, just didnt like it all that much...

FHTI-id say half the songs were fucking insane, half were decent, private eye, mr chainsaw, take lots, stupid kid, bloodied up, im dieing tomorrow, trucks and trains and crawl were my favorites, they also had some poppy songs kinda in there, didnt like them but still stayed true

GM-love this album, from the opening guitar, this could be love, continental, and such were good songs, all around it was good, but still was missing something

Crimson-what they missed in GM was made up on this album, i regret that it is slow, BUT both of them got better lyrically, seems dan went a bit higher in his range, which was good and bad at points, but w.e, the lyrics were quite amazing/impressive. The cd was reminiscent of both the older alkaline and the newer alkaline

    k,thx,bai

good mourning was over-produced, but it was still very good.

crimson is over-produced, but it is still the fucking shit.

it has taken a while for me to accept the relatively strict partitioning of dan and matt between each song in their old records. hearing more dueling vocals on crimson is the fucking shit.

if you consider crimson on its own merits, it's great. compared to the other alkaline trio releases, well...oh who cares.

this review is OK. comparing movie trilogies with anything besides other than movie trilogies isn't cool though.

    matrix reloaded sucked ass.

I hear you man...in reference to the guy before me. I'm starting to like this cd the more i listen to it and i do really like alkaline trio but this cd is just toooooo soft and processed. There is no way it will sound like this live with all these vocal effects. There are some really good songs on hear but it pails in comparison to the other releases in my opinion. Good mourning was way better i thought...at least it rocks and is less poppy. Back to hell is awesome, your neck is cool, mercy me is sweet, but burn sounds like nine inch nails!

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 2:54 AM (EDT)

goddamn, there is just NO flow to this record at all. i'm really disappointed. burn is probably the worst song they've ever recorded, and the production makes me feel like i'm listening to this through a wall. far too dreamy. and dan sounds like a ghost - way too much echo. it's killing me that the "old" alkaline trio is definately gone for good. sigh.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 2:38 AM (EDT)

Does anyone remember when derek played with the suicide machines and tore mad shit up with his drumming. He was insane. I haven't seen any of that tenacity on this or good mourning. Still solid, but not the derek grant that blew me away in S.M. or telegraph. Album is weak, but definitely listenable.

    My Score:

"from here to infirmary is shit so don't go saying its good cos it only has about 3 good songs on it"

Hmmm.....well spoken. Actually, most A3 fans would agree that Infirmary is twice the album Good Mourning is. It is also better than Crimson.

Here is the true order from best to worst:
    Goddamnit
    S/T
HWM split (only three tracks, but three of their best)
    From Here To Infirmary
    Crimson
    BYO Split
    Maybe I'll Catch Fire
    Good Mourning

This isn't a knock on Good Mourning. I like all their work, but to me Good Mourning just lacked the creativity and originality of the others.

I agree that Dans vocals are too produced on crimson...or too many effects or something. Ohhh...and people always bust on his songs on good mourning as being too happy compared to skiba...which maybe true...but the songs on crimson arent exactly dark...the are just as poppy! Actually...the entire record sounds very poppy despite the dark lyrics which i guess is kinda their nich. I thought good mourning sounds much darker and heavier...more songs in minor keys and his scrachy voice adds to the dark sound.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 27, 2005 at 1:48 PM (EDT)

i prefer skiba to dan too, but I think dans songwriting has VASTLY improved since goddammit, and I do think they balance out nicely and compliment e/o

his shit on goddammit is just whiney and stupid and his voice used to be so out of key and terrible. 'this is getting over you' is painful on the s/t. horrible vocals.

his 2 songs on the OMA split were great, whatever track 2 was called was probably his best song to date

'i was a prayer' and 'the poison' are both phenomenal on here, better than any of his songs on good mouring save maybe track 11, whatever that one was called

Maybe for the youngens on this website it is shocking, but you'd be better off to realize most bands are comprised of assholes, and drugs are everywhere.

Music doesn't make you a good person, selling a good person is easier though, as long as you have just enough anti-establishment attitude to market.

Not doing drugs, or doing them doesn't mean you good/bad.

But doing drugs, then coming out of your tour bus to find young female fans, and then saying you do it for the 'kids', thats bad. Gene Simmons bad.

Incidentally, despite their vagrant years making me nod off, I actually dig this record very much. Nice job.

    1. self-titled (even though some of the really early stuff isnt so hot, the 2 EPs and "my friend peter" blow everything else away)

    2. goddamnit (only one bad song "cop", the rest is great and fun and well-written and hints at being dark without going overboard)

    3. good mourning (more dan songs than usual and thats a good thing to me. the return of fun songs. i wish they'd included the full band version of "blue in the face", though)

    4. from here to infirmary (half good songs half bad songs. terrible artwork and sometimes good, sometimes awful lyrics)

    5. maybe i'll catch fire (the dan songs are the only ones i can listen to. matt's lyrics read like a 5th grader wrote them. this record is bullshit)

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, May 26, 2005 at 4:40 PM (EDT)

The more i listen the stronger the album is. 1 and 4 are incredibly catchy. Sadie is awesome, and 10 and 13 are incredible. It's just well-balanced with the catchy rockers at the beginning and the synth-drenched almost ballads at the end, and a bunch of solid filler (not in a bad way) in between. I still like S/T and Goddamnit better, but this is such a different band now that its hard to compare them.

I think Matt's vocals on Good Mourning were awesome! Although they were "scratchy" they really added a raw element to a very produced album. His voice has always been a little scratchy and on Good Mourning they chose to bring that out.

i got FHTI first...so its my fav, i mean its what hooked me on them

i got goddammit last, maybe even after good mourning! so it just sounded so primitative. i busted out laughing hearing 'cop' for the first time and that acoustic dan song is just god awful. granted, if i had gotten it first or second my opinnion might differ, but i really only like 3 songs on there...its just too simplistic and immature and raw. its like listening to nofx 'punk in drublic' first then hearing 'ribbed' last...its just god awful, classic album or not.

Can we compare Wookies to spiders? I dunno. Do we not capitalize Earthly ethnic groups like the Magyar or the Teutons or the Choctaw? We sure do! I've used two different spellcheckers and both capitalize Martian, so there we have it. From now on, Rodian, Twi'Lek, and all other galactic races shall hereby be proper nouns!

"Road Warrior was the only one in the Mad Max trilogy worth watching at all. Go watch Death Race 2000, it's better than all three combined."

Stay your tongue, infidel! Say what you want about Thunderdome, it wasn't terrific, but it did have the dude from Rose Tattoo. The first Mad Max however is not only one of, if not THE, punkest movie of all-time, it was also a cinematic milestone. I read something that it was the most profitable movie ever made. Meaning, they spent like a 100K to make it, and it grossed like 50 million. Pretty impressive for an indie film with a lot of nasty scenes. All that changed when Blair Witch came out though, cuz that thing cost 25 bucks to make, but that's neither here nor there. The moral of the story is, the first Mad Max was both amazing and hugely influential.

I agree with you that the Road Warrior is the best of the three...

Everyone seems to dislike from here to infirmary. I thought it was a very good cd...actually its always been my favorite. I love bands like NO use, lagwagaon, face to face and so on...and From here to infirmary is the most similar to that style in my opinion. Songs like Mr. chainsaw, take lots with alcohol, and armageddon are awesome melodic punk songs that are reminicient of classic punk like the misfits, damned, ramones and the like. The song crawl is one of their best with great lyrics, raw, emotional and hard driving. Sure stupid kid is really poppy but overall that record rocks with loud guitars and a basic and raw kind of recording quality. I really like the earlier stuff as well but its more emoish...and i do apologize for using that term.

Bobby Kielty has finally found his groove at the plate and appears to be over his rib injury, so most of Nick's playing time will come in left field. His fantasy value will be on the rise if the trade rumors surrounding Eric Byrnes come to fruition and he is sent out of town.

Its getting better the more I listen to it...i figured that would happen. Matts voice is awesome just maybe too much vocal layering on EVERY chorus. And I am not sure why everyone of Dans vocals has to have all those effects on them...it sounds like a flanger or chorus effect for those who play guitar....people always rip on his voice but i always thought it was pretty cool. Prevent this tragedy is a pretty good song once you get past the synth intro. My least fav track is burn...its very catchy but i does kinda remind me of linkin park as someone said earlier.

yea man, i'm not saying its necessarily the age thing, but i think its more of where they are in life, just not depressed anymore. dan's married, matt's engaged, i heard matt has really toned down his party/drug/drinking life, theyv'e become successful, makin money, etc.

    paul

and derek's drumming is kinda boring on here, but its what he wants to do

his best was still in the suicide machines : )

Derrek's drumming sucks on this record, and he's one of my three favorite drummers around today. He has so much more talent than is displayed on Crimson, just look at the Alkaline Trio's DVD.

Getting older does not equal slowing down or becoming less edgy. I realize that as musicians they want to experiment as playing the same style must get old from their perspective. I just whish more of the songs were a little harder with more emphasis on loud punk style chainsaw riffs like on basically every other record they have recorded...i guess thats just one of the qualities i have always liked about them. And just because you're approaching 30 does not mean you have to start listening to the postal service and the killers and all that indie 80s sounding music. I'm 29 and I still prefer punk such as social D, face to face, misfits and nofx...i guess i am immature.

The art work is trash. GREAT ALBUM! Shitty photography. The lyric booklet is thick, but their is nothing to it. I don't mind the album cover, but the rest of the artwork can hit the road...

I too have gotta give props to Temple of Doom. It wasn't great when it first came out, but it's certainly gotten much better with age! Classic 80s flick, despite some annoying chracters.

For fuck's sake... they ripped a guys heart out!!!

    My Score:

    this record blows
this is their worst and most blatant attempt at being "dark" and "epic" and it fails miserably. the guitar riffs are reminiscent of corny metal. the piano intro is terribly unnecessary and lame. the lyrics are also terrible, but they've been terrible since maybe i'll catch fire.

what happened to the great, fun band that wrote goddamnit and the EPs? i want them back

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 2:19 PM (EDT)

yea, i see your point, i too commented earlier that i think they get a little too caught up in their 'dark' image and lyrics but the problem is, the sheer awesomeness of their old lyrics came from how fucking angry they were. skiba is like engaged, has money, probably a decent place, gets steady ass, drinks wine, turns 30 soon....its just not the same, i do like their old lyrics better, and i do think the music is better than the lyrics on this album, but its still a progression from good mourning and i think its as solid of a 6th alk3 album that i could expect. most bands don't even make a 5th album.

and those of you asking why its missing the 'punk edge' or its edgyness or 3 chords and breakneck speeds

its cuz they aren't 21 anymore. they're late 20's, whats skiba, 29 now? i mean people change, music preferences, attitudes etc, especially in their 20's. shit i'm 25 and i'm TOTALLY different than i was 5 years ago, in terms of what i listen too (well theres some overlap, but i'm not nearly as into skate punk/epitaph punk type stuff than i was back in 99-2000) and some shit i listen to , like the postal service, i wouldnt even have touched 5 years ago.

    Me again.
Also, "I was a prayer" is very good. In fact, I don't have a big problem with any of Dan's songs. Poison is one of my favorites of his.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 2:07 PM (EDT)

That was me right above Paul. I'd like to clarify, I don't think most of the lyrics are silly. There are just an abnormal (for the Trio) number of subpar lyrics.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 2:05 PM (EDT)

See, some of us care about intelligence and thought going into our music. Music is equally important, I'm just attacking the lyrics on this album because it is far more musically sound than lyrically sound.
Similarly, I can't like a band just for the lyrics if the music is bad. They're BOTH important.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 2:04 PM (EDT)

silly lyrics? anyone who thinks the lyrics to 'i was a prayer' are silly is a fucking pretentious (theres the word we all love) piece of shit. fuck you. hanson has silly lyrics dickbag.

Fuck the lyrics, listen to the music. I'm sick of all these people who are into all this lyrical quality shit. Alklaline Trio has sillly lyrics but they play great music.

not to be an ass, but i believe you meant thinking. maybe you and skiba were on the same page.

Actually, i've been told there are subtle differences between minor typos and singing poor lines. Maybe the same book, but most definetly different pages.

    My Score:

Just because it's better than Good Mourning doesn't make it good. It's good mourning with shitty synth parts.

Anyone remember when Alkaline Trio had cool lyrics with hints of dark imagry and not just really corny "dark" lyrics? I also hate the slick production of all of their vagrant albums. Meh. I used to love Alk3 but this isn't cutting it at all.

Huh. I downloaded this on a whim (expecting it to suck), and was actually pleasantly surprised. I mean, it's not great, but every song is listenable.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 11:51 AM (EDT)

I thought the song "your neck" was pretty bad when I first heard it, but after a few listens it grew on me and is actually kinda like a modern misfits song...like children in heat...but way more overproduced since the misfits sounded like they were recorded with a tape recorder. Overall crimson is a 7 out of 10.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 11:31 AM (EDT)

polished production is for pussies, you stupid college boys

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 11:29 AM (EDT)

I too think its a bit overproduced and I guess that makes me gay for thinking that. I still like the record and actually dont mind the lyrics or the actual songs and shit. There just seems to be less edge and less of a punk rock sound to it. I guess thats not a bad thing to everyone. The reason I 1st got into the trio was for their 3 chord, loud guitar sound...i feel that sound is almost gone from this album. I have always like pop or melodic punk like face to face and No Use but alks new cd is much more poppy..ohh well. Its still worth getting i think.

    My Score:

great album. they've grown more since 'good mourning' than they have between any other 2 albums. very different. much more dramatic, slower, more songwriting effort. really, the core sound is there, but this is a VERY different trio than the one that released 'from here to infirmiry'. the lyrical content is still clever and dark, but it is more abstract and the drinking references are gone (this bums me out, but they're being honest...as they near their 30's and get married i'm glad to see they aren't early 20's depressed boozehounds anymore).

some of it sounds liek classic trio...i think 'mercy me' or 'back to hell' have a classic feel to them, while 'burn' and 'smoke' sound nothing like anything they've done before and niether song could be construed as having a 'punk' soudn at all. the drum beats are much more varied througout the album. not everysong just drives that punk pace out of the gate, a lot of slower tempo's and time changes are used.

'good mourning' was really just 'from here to infirmiry' but weaker...no real evolution, this album sounds like it had a lot more effort put into it. its also nice to not hear Dan singing his love songs that seemed to fuck w/ the flow of 'good mourning' so much. i mean one minute w/ had skiba talking about being 'fatally yours' then we get dan doing a few numbers about how in love he is...that was just not them, it was dan writing dan songs, now he's back to writing trio songs...ambigoous and dark.

Nobody said the Blink-182 album was overproduced because there's a difference between produced well and overproduced. Blink-182 is far poppier and wrote songs that fit that production better.
And everybody makes comments about production these days because we're finally at the point where bands on labels can afford to make the album sound exactly like they want to. Therefore, if the production is bad, it's a choice that was made, not an inevitably due to the cost of good recording.
And why has noone commented on the fact that these are the worst lyrics the Trio has ever written? "Drive yourself insane tonight, it's not that far away, and I just filled up your tank earlier today"? "You live and you burn"? The entirety of "Your Neck"? Spelling Deathbed as "Dethbed"?
Or the fact that "Burn" sounds like a Linkin Park song.
Nonetheless, I enjoy this album. Just saying, it's not up to par, especially after the phenomenal split EP.

    March of the wooden soldiers
    C-cypher punks couldn't hold us
    A thousand men rushin in
    Not one nigga was sober
    Perpendicular to the square
    We stand bold like flare
Escape from your dragon's lair, in particular
My beats travel like a vortex, through your spine
to the top of your cerebrum cortex
Make you feel like you bust a nut from raw sex

    RZA owns you.

The production is a big part of an album, its the difference between songs recorded, and songs performed live, you ignorant, retarded fuck.

    -sickboi

(and don't talk shit on the RZA)

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 9:43 AM (EDT)

hey i'm just commenting on the production of the vocals because i think they sound shit. why would i comment on the production 'just to be cool'?

    oh yeah, fuck you too.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 9:35 AM (EDT)

I love how everyone feels the need to comment on production these days. is that the cool thing to do? is everyone the fucking RZA all of a sudden. fuck anyone who makes a comment on production. you're ghey.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 9:14 AM (EDT)

"because in my opinion if they can pull it off live then how is it overproduced"

...because the vocals dont even sound real. they sound too perfect and soft and electronic.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 8:30 AM (EDT)

i just picked this up and i am actually suprised at how good it is. i wasnt expecting it to be that special after good mourning didnt make me feel it was special. this is a really solid album in my view. it doesnt hold a candle to maybe ill catch fire or goddammit! but id reccomend it anyway.
