Well, it was bound to happen; all these hardcore bands running around dressed like glam rockers sans the teased hair had to inevitably lead to a return to the music that spawned that same fashion. Until now, the bands have sounded like short-haired mosh-metal, but the clothing has been decidedly glam. Certainly, the hardcore scene of the past was rife with machismo and the violent crews and straight edge riots did nothing but encourage the testostorone-fueled antics of the more fanatical members of the scene. But at some point, the tide began to turn. Suddenly a vibrant and vital music scene that had been hijacked by the worst stereotype of jock swung to the opposite extreme; it became effeminate, delicate even.

Relegated to the memories of older scenesters were the memories of kids in fake furs being pummmeled at Earth Crisis shows; instead, the faux fur would emerge as a symbol of the most forward-thinking fashionista. The natural consequence of this? Avenged Sevenfold and their City Of Evil.

I suppose what I'm saying is that you can't really fault Avenged Sevenfold for their chosen genre of music. The kids wanted to look like glam rock; they wanted the major labels, the cash and teenaged groupies of glam rock. Eventually someone was bound to put two-and-two together and ask why they were bothering with this whole hardcore thing when they could just save time by singing like Guns'n'Roses and playing like Guns'n'Roses. And the “Guns'n'Roses-core” of Avenged Sevenfold is not ironic; in interviews they speak lividly of “markets” and focused demographics; undoubtedly, they will be tracking their soundscan numbers from the luxury of a plush, major label bus as they make their rounds to the Warped Tour, playing to kids who weren't old enough to remember Axl Rose. No, Avenged Sevenfold has fully immersed themselves in the heavy fuckin' metal of 1985, and expect all the trapping that it could bring.

Accordingly, while the failed auteur of Chinese Democracy is certainly the first name that springs to mind when listening to City Of Evil, comparisons to Alice In Chains' decidedly more metal Facelift are also deserved. Vocalist M. Shadows sounds eerily like the late Layne Staley, particularly on “Burn It Down.” Almost completely boiled away are the Thrice comparions which dogged their first full-length, replaced instead with what I imagine will be endless kudos from the British metal press; the band conjures up Iron Maiden far more than Bad Religion this time around. Harmonized leads, endless soloing and cover art which could have been borrowed from a long forgotten 80's hair metal album; it's all here.

Besides the overwhelming power metal cheese of the band -- which may or may not be a strike against them depending on your perspective -- there are some decidedly more objective problems with the record; the first is certainly the overwhelming length of many of the songs. While it is possible to write an effective song at longer than five minutes, it is remarkably difficult for Avenged Sevenfold to do so while mantaining any semblance of a theme and still keeping things interesting; far too much of the material on the record stretches far beyond any measure of patience, often reusing bridges, choruses and ideas haphazardly.

The frustratingly catchy “Blinded in Chains” starts strong, but falters simply because of the sheer endurance as the song seemingly repeats itself for about three minutes before finally finding its footing. At more than six minutes, one wonders why the band didn't consider ending the song about halfway through; instead, a catchy opening is forgotten as they trudge aimlessly through the song.

“Seize The Day” is clearly the band's most obvious scrounging of Guns'n'Roses, complete with a nearly-plagarized melody layered over a piano and a guitarist soloing in what I imagine is a top hat. The seven-minute “Sidewinder” begins with a solid, shredding riff, but the eventual caterwaulling vocals which accompany it deaden any of it's power.

Avenged Sevenfold has pulled off a remarkable transformation over their few records; gone almost entirely is the screaming, the growling and other vocal cartwheels at which M.Shadows admittedly excelled; in its place are songs that place a remarkable amount of pressure on his singing voice. At times, he succeeds, and at other times his Axl Rose imitation falls short. The band has strayed so far from hardcore that it becomes incredibly difficult to rate it; as a hardcore, punk or even metalcore record, it is a decided failure, choosing all the self-indulgent noodling that inspired bands like the Ramones and Minor Threat to do something different. On the other hand, as a attempt at power metal, it succeeds on nearly all counts. All the elements of the genre are in place and done surprisingly well.

there's no denying the technical prowess of avenged sevenfold, but overly self-indulgent "epics" combined with ear-grating vocals and middle school grade lyricism make city of evil a chore to listen to.

    My Score:

This is the best CD ever. People who are always bad mouthing it obviously don't even understand the nature of the songs. Seize The Day was a heartfelt song about love, not meant to be judged by riffs and rocker techniques. Avenged Sevenfold prevails because it gives new and unique music in a wave of music that sounds just like the next. Every time you hear Avenged Sevenfold, they stand out. And if people can't understand that that is what they are going for, then that's your loss. Your judging them by how they sound compared to mindless bands who get their ideas from listening to the radio. If you don't like the song, don't listen to it. But I think Avenged Sevenfold needs to keep doing what they're doing.

there are no words to describe how much i hate this band. good god! how can you kids actually enjoy this? it is nauseating how generic and over the top this band has become. i must be missing their redeeming qualities. otherwise, all i can say is that you fans are lost. unquestionably and hopelessly lost.

Posted by xFreezyx on 2007-03-05 23:14:54

Outstanding guitar work, but I hate this band with a passion. They got too involved with trying to please the industry. The first cd was epic and the rest sort of went down hill.

    My Score:

The music isn't exactly bad, but it may need a touch of old-school hardcore sense in the beats....the speedy feeling of their beats leaves you w/the same feeling of My Chemical Romance's music: soft punk w/potential to get even harder and aggressive if they want it.....nevertheless, A7X does a good job....

um...i kinda like it. I heard bat country on the radio the other day and really liked the song, so i downloaded the album. i'm definitely a punk person for the most part. I listen to plenty of other music, but punk has always been a constant. anyway i'm normally really not into the whole power metal thing but i'm diging this album. maybe i'll wake up tomorrow and wonder what the fuck i was thinking, but right now i get it.

VVV this is no better than limp bizkit. good musicians can still make very shitty music and here is a prime example. plus other than the band as a whole (which stands for shit anyways) the people behind it all are some of the worst people the music community has ever seen and these are just people trying to milk an art form for all its worth. fuck them.

This is a band that catches a lot of crap from the metal community due to airplay and their image, but I think they have a sound that can appeal to fans of metal and more mainstream music. Despite what I think of them as people (They are pretty much assholes) and their career decisions (changed their image to appease the label), this is a good record. Very nice guitar work and drumming throughout, but Shadows' voice is a little spotty - but hey, so was Axel Rose's (who he obviously mimics). Like it or not, they're here to stay for a few years (hey, it could be worse - we could still be having Limp Bizkit forced down our throats). Best tracks are "The Wicked End" and "Strength of the World."

I'll admit, the music's good... but the vocals are shit.

And I'll even admit I was once a HUGE a7x fan... but with the release of this album, the AP interview where M. Shadows pretty much gave their old fans the middle finger, AND the fact that they refuse to play their old shit live--- the very music that GOT them the Warner deal... all i've got to say is, FUCK YOU... you can HAVE the trl crowd and the shit reviews... you've earned it, anyway.

Nope disagree. You have to admit the guitaring is good and still has some catchy and interesting riffs and especialy solos

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at 1:24 PM (EDT)

How low do we have to fight here eh? Talkin' shit is all you guys can do to each other. Remember that originality is the only way anyone will open their mind to a different style of music. Yeah there is harder stuff and softer stuff, but that's what it should come down too, and Avenged sevenfold has a good mixture of that, so that's how I view their musicianship instead of sitting pathetically behind a computer screne and complain. Inspire yourself and learn what it means to be a musician, than you won't talk shit anymore.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 27, 2006 at 8:30 PM (EST)

this album is pretty good, the older stuff is great however. It is sad to see that this band now has so many 14 year old fat hot topic pig girls as fans. I know it is bound to happen when you make it to the otherside, but it is still very hard to watch happen to ax7.

    My Score:

I'm a metalhead, so my bias is towards this album over their older stuff...It's not something I'd listen to as much as I do Skyclad or Iron Maiden, but it's anthemetic, catchy, and heavy as Hell...As for the cheese factor, I like Manowar, so I can tolerate any level of cheese.

Shadow's voice is like axel rose should probably learn their shit...Shadows had to get vocal implants because he blew his own out trying to scream to make you pussies happy...notice the lack of screaming on this album....so abandon now, because guys are making money and you freeload off your parents

ok...now being an avenged fan for a few years now i can agree that i much more enjoy their old stuff (Waking The Fallin may be one of the top 10 albums of all time) but come on, this new shit isn't as terrible as you guys make it out to be....just cause the band doesn't play the same shit over and over again, some of you dumbasses out there want to say that a7x is shit....well to all you closed minded children who sit in your rooms and rock out hard core to only metal music while your mom calls you down for dinner, i suggest that if you don't like the album get off the review and stop listening if its "as bad as NFG and Guns and Roses"....on top of all that, go to an avenged concert and call their fans pussies there..then we shall find out who the *true* posers are...

    :-)

p.s. M. Shadows (their vocalists to all the dumbasses who don't know and say he sucks) will kill you and your sister

Some people call it melodicore, I call it hair metal.
Honestly, 'Bat Country' sounds so bad, it could be by Guns and Roses.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to listen to 'Remenissions'.

well i accually think the A7X's City of Evil is a great album. my friends and I have all agreed that we can put that cd in and listen to every song and not have the intention of turning a song or switching cds. I think you people should listen up and accually turn up your stereos and listen to the music, and M. Shadows has probally one of the best voices out today. Their drum lines by The Rev are awesome. I don't want to forget about their amazing guitar lines by Zacky V and Synester Gates. This band is by far the best live band I have ever seen. I saw them twice at this past years Warped Tour and i was amazed at every set. Their energy was off the charts.

"hell yeah, maybe warner will sign us!"

My friend has an a7x tattoo, and now because of this peice of shit, which is exactly what the band has become, he is ashamed of it. if i could give this a zero, i would.

Ok, so to all the bitches who don't know shit about music. So Avenged Sevenfold got a new sound, HAVE A FUCKIN CRY! Shadows burst a vessel in his neck and can't scream, they can't just get a new guy, he's been with the band since back in the 90's before they hit anything big. They're new stuff, although different than the normal hardcore metal, has incredible musical talent and they should be praised for being able to do that. I'd like to see some of the pussies below me write anything 1/1000 as good as A7X is doing. And incase you unbelievers haven't noticed, A7X is toootallly owning the American metal business. They have sell outs everywhere they go weeks before they even get there. So if you don't like them, "to each his/her own", but if you don't like them, shut your fucking mouth and let those of us who do enjoy them. God people, if you don't like it don't whine about it, we don't wanna hear your shit.

If you dont know what the band is about, then why the hell judge them? Get your facts straight.

Whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. --Gen. iv. 15. (Avenge 'Sevenfold') [In the Hebrew Bible]

    [In the Hebrew Bible](quick facts) Beast & The Harlot;
Revelation 17:1-7 ''With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast..'
'having seven heads and ten horns..'
    'BABYLON THE GREAT..'

simply only explaining the fist song on their new cd, City of Evil - Beast & The Harlot.

Im sure that you could look into what Avenged Sevenfold is singing about, whether it be suicide, burning in hell or love, whatever. Its not always about the music, dip shits. Listen to what they are singing about, or just fuck off.
If you like their music, fine, if you dont, fine, but if you dont even listen to them and just feel that you're going to be fucking cool and 'go with the flow' whatever the fuck you'd want that to be, and start dissing a band that you've never heard of, nor listened to, just go get a life, maybe look into checking out what band that is, but in this case, that would be Avenged Sevenfold.

You people. alright. agreed, avenged sevenfold is strangely reminiscent of an early 80s metal band. but they write good lyrics, they put their music together well, their guitar players are pretty decent, and if they were walking through the mall they could probably get a blow-job from your little sister. so quit talking shit and pick up your guitar and show them they suck, oh and keep practicing. until then go work your 50 grand a year jobs and resume plotting on taking over the world of metal, while theyre doing it right in front of your face.

City of Evil is a brilliant piece of work. Easy to judge something new and fresh... I dont think there's a single band out there that sounds like Avenged Sevenfold right now. With the Fall Out Boy's and MCR's, it all sounds like regurgitated crap. Avenged Sevenfold have made an incredible transition. Stop comparing them to Guns n Roses, Iron Maiden, Metallica - whatever; they are their own and let's leave it at that.

I was very pleased with this record. I love all their CD's. I think musical change is good and keeps people into it. Who wants to keep hearing more of the same? Besides I also sing for a metal band and understand the bullshit that singers have to go through when dealing with screaming/singing. When you scream you are @ high risk for vocal nodules and polyps as well as what M.Shadow had, burst blood vessel. These are not issues you want to deal with.. So from one singer to another I totally feel the guy on wanted to reinvent the sound.. it really isnt worth it. Take a pair of pliers and tighten them around your vocal chords, cut your speaking volume in half, and then add a shitload of rasp.. It really sucks. But anyway, this album really shocked me. It was original and it was well written. I still enjoy the screaming vocals of the other records but I am open minded enough to accept this is an amazing piece of music. You guys kick ass =D

Five months since this cd came out and it's still the favorite for my cd of the year.

I don't understand people who liked their last two cd's yet hate this one. I really liked their last two cd's but this one is absolutely brilliant. I am a fan of melodic music, not screaming. I can't believe some people can actually say they don't like this cd just because there's no screaming. The combination of catchy melodic hooks with extremely technical music on this cd is above and beyond anything I've ever heard before.

I've never listened to Iron Maiden or any of those glam metal bands from the 80's, so obviously I can't hear any influences there. But the influences I do hear is a perfect mix of Bad Religion and Strung Out(my two favorite bands). I've been waiting for a sound that combines those two styles and now I've found them.

Well First off, Anyone who says M.Shadows cant sing anymore is full of BS. Just because he doesnt scream doesnt mean he doesnt have an awsome voice. He have fuking Surgery on his throat because he Busted a Blood Vessel. And his doctor or what said if he kept screaming like that, he'd lose his voice by 30. and hes 24 now. So umm, No voice at all, or still singing after 30. Lets think here. Dumbasses. If you dont like the way m sings or scream or whatever the hell he does, GO OUT AND DO IT YOURSELFS. dumbasses.

    My Score:

What can I say about this album? First of all, there is no doubt Vengeance and Gates are excellent guitarists and have carried their musical talent from the older discs into this one. I was disappointed to find a lack of screaming and realizing the vocals of some parts of songs (such as Betrayal, Missing In Action, and even the chorus of, in my opinion, the best song of the album Beast and the Harlot) began to sound, dare I say it... emo... Don't get me wrong! M. Shadows is a great vocalist and has enough to prove it (e.g. Desecrate Through Reverence off Waking the Fallen). However, this IS MY opinion and MY review, and I do happen to listen to emo, but I just didn't expect I would associate the term with A7X. The lyrics are definitely metal, seeming to draw inspiration from Iron Maiden and Metallica, but it's just the way the lyrics are sung. The album includes a lot of other genres like pop and goth and such, but, hopefully, A7X can find a neater way to blend them all together. City of Evil isn't a terrible album, but it isn't the most amazing one either. So, in the middle, 2 1/2 stars.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, August 5, 2005 at 6:48 PM (EDT)

not sayin you all are dumb fucks but for the people bashin m.shadows vocals and the cd band you should be glad they came out with another cd. The vocals arent as good cause he popped a blood vessel in his throat so he cant scream sure most of u knew this. but i just seen them live and best band i ever saw live. the recordings live were kinda lame for the old shit but they seemed to pull it off all the same but ide have to say best band ive ever seen live.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at 2:22 PM (EDT)

i guess i'm in the minority here but i bought the last album and thought all the screaming was cheesy and generic not the metal riffs. i liked better when the guy actually sang. i liked the album but didn't think i'd be buying the new one... until i heard "bat country." fuck me that's a good song. the guy is singing and the music is pure power metal. look i'm almost 30 years old (in the minority again, i'm sure) and i grew up on this type of music. i still listen to my Helloween albums on a regular basis. i just bought the album and i'm listening to it for the first time as i type this and i'm loving it. i guess i can understand some people being bitter that the group is no longer "punk/hardcore/metalcore/whatever" i used to feel the same way when i was younger. feeling like a band you loved has changed and turned their back on the scene that supported them but i really think this is where avenged sevenfold belong. to these ears this album doesn't sound as forced as 'waking the fallen.' they sound confident and comfortable. this album in going on my best of '05 list for sure.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, July 28, 2005 at 11:42 PM (EDT)

i submit this quote from the review:

"there are some decidedly more objective problems with the record; the first is certainly the overwhelming length of many of the songs. "

That is a subjective problem, not an objective problem. I listen to songs that are an hour long, and still maintain a cohesive song structure. If the reviewer is incapable of knowing the nature of opinion (i.e. all opinion is subjective), that is a terrible reviewer. This was a terrible review, btw.

    My Score:

I agree with the last comment. All I can say is listen to Bat Country. Also their ability to play softer songs that I can stand is incredible, just listen to Seize The Day. My last thing I have to say, is their lyrics. Read through the book or read the lyrics on the internet. The lyrics they have written can be connected to 90% of your lives, I guarantee it.

    My Score:

Now i would say i hate every hardcore band...with two exceptions, Death By Stereo and Avenged Sevenfold.
Yes i only listen to 2 minute long songs or less, except for avenged. The more i listen to this album the more i realize it gets better with every listen. Shadows voice is annoying at first, but in some of the choruses his voice is perfect. Most everyone will admit the guitarists are good, in every song there is usually some solo you actually have to listen for that is buried under vocals or the other guitar. The amazing solos and catchy riffs are the only reason i bought the album. But i have come to like it more than i expected. Better than waking the fallen and sounding the seventh trumpet. I would say no now, but i also pick sounding the seventh trumpet over waking the fallen. so quit bitching just because you heard Beast and the Harlot, that is a really cheesy song, and in my opinion the worst song on the cd. Listen to the whole thing.

I don't like to comment on what anyone else thinks or says because I really don't care. I will, however, put my two cents in for those who are are wondering if they should get A7X or not--
I had all but lost faith with the rock, punk, metal, and alternative music generation. This generation of "cookie-cutter" type bands makes me fearful that we are in the dark ages of music and creativity and talent are deceased. At 35 years old now, I despair what future holds for me or will I fall into the sickenning mediocrity of it all and die discontently.
My hope of renaissance has been sparked by the forthcoming of A7X and I am grateful to them for being who they are and honoring ALL of their influential musical forefathers.

    My Score:

I am very dissapointed in this cd. I would have expected much better from a7x considering how the last two albums were so great. M. Shadows in my opinion is an excellent vocalist, but for city of evil he dosen't make use of this. And as for the playing, what used to be clean, sharp, and catchy is now sloppy and mashed together. They try to continue with the excellent guitar playing that was present in previous cds, but it sounds so badly mixed together, with poor transitions. After buying Waking the Dead, I considered them to be one of the greatest bands of all time. Now it seems they have gone mainstream, and produce music for the most popular group of consumers, 13 year old girls. As I listen to both the old and new cds, I hope to hear that there will be talk of working on a new album. Along with millions of other dissapointed fans I hope to hear a7x go back to the metal genre, and play good music again. I've heard that Avenged plays the best shows ever, with the live music sounding just like it does on cd - and i was anxiously looking foreward to seeing them in concert. Now im not so sure I should even waste my time. Im sorry people, but this stuff just sucks and it happens to a lot of bands, but truthfully this is the biggest letdown. Thank God As I Lay Dying still makes good music

This album does what 99% rock bands can't do.

    Being original.

Just the fact that it's original makes it worthwhile listening to. And M. Shadows' blood vessel in his voice box ruptured, THAT'S why he rarely screams and does more melodic vocals now (they said that he'd be mute by the time he's forty years old if he kept screaming so he stopped).

And everyone's doing the screaming and growling shit anyway. If you think that punk/metal is good just because it has growling, go find some other garbage band that thinks that they are cool because they can't. I hope every other damned ignorant band loses their fucking voice and see how it's like.

I personally love the new City Of Evil album, and if you don't like it quit complaining about it and go listen to the bands that you prefer to listen 2 . In my opinoin A7X is number one on my list no matter what I've loved them since day 1 but if you don't just don't listen 2 them simple as that.

This is a great lalbum to listen to. People commenting say the singer sounds like shit, I think the singing perfect comments the drums and guitar. The guitar riffs are also amazing, not play over and over again like those gay punk records. Not hard to palm mute a beat for 3 minutes. City of Evil, definately the best album i've heard so far this year, I can proudly put the album beside my Atreyu and other Avenged Sevenfold albums as the fav's.

See, the first time I listened to this album, all i wanted to do was throw up
But after a while it gets better...there's always going to be people who hate them and feel the need to share their opinions but oh fucking well

I DO miss the screaming (which isn't a punk/'hardcore' thing, by the way) but it made them better...
And it's not like they WANTED singing...The lead singer had surgery on his throat so now he CAN'T scream like that anymore. I definately don't like this one as much as the last two, but these guys have talent (you can see from the last 2 albums), so I'm going to wait around and see if it gets better...

this album really, really sucks. good thing i didn't get A7X tatooed on my dick when i listened to waking the fallen because i think i can safely say that i would have cut off my penis. this album, instead of trudging forward, runs backwards. back into the safety of the flashy, stupid 80s. progression, not regression. if they really wanted to be creative, they should have created something new. instead they just decided to rework guns n' roses songs. this album WILL be successful, don't get me wrong, but this new direction is even more pussy and even more safe than sticking with the whole metalcore/hardcore trend. more bands are going to be doing this sort of thing and more bands are going to appear sounding like 80s power metal and it makes me want to hibernate for the next twenty years.

Whatever happened to opinions anyway? Is music all objective now? ... probably not ... byacka.

wow i have to say that this new album is pretty disgusting (as in bad)... there is no screaming which totally ruins the band, and its 80s metal... if you want 80s metal just listen to an old CD.. no1 wants to hear another band redo it.. M. Shadows voice is totally different in this new album and i actually hate it.. they will lose many, many fans because of this new album

idc what any1 says guns'n'roses werent even good... and no i never bothered to listen to it anyways... a7x needs to go back to post-hardcore/screamo/metal

Good album, misses the screaming of the last album, but the guitars are better, and the lyrics are extremely intense and intelligent. I am surprised that no one commented on the political contents of AX7's new music. They seem passionate about the rape of world by our (the US) government. MIA is an awesome song that puts you into the mind of a soldier in Iraq, or any other country we presently occupy. AX7 pretty much brings down the ideals of democracy such as materialism and modern "wants" with the "Wicked End". They may sound evil, but they are only spreading the truth -- ON A MAJOR LABEL. M. Shadows should change his vocal style though, he is the only ruining factor of the new album.

I was surprised by this album. I haven't heard a good record since Dragonforce's Sonic Firestorm. Waking the Fallen was just real dull to me. It had a few good tracks. City of Evil though, really shows different ends of hardcore punk and metal fused together. It stays fast and hard and never goes shitty. And this is on Warner?

Also I heard M. Shadows had throat surgery due to his screaming. Any confirmation?

This isn't a review is just a stupid critic on the decision of change gender. why don't you just listen to what you ear and not what you want to think...

A7X Rocked the house with the 7th trumpet and with Waking the Fallen and now they Rock again with new music.

Only a great band with talent can make different kinds of music and rule in eachone ^__*... probably kind of gelous too huh?
