Reviews

As a fellow punk aficionado, it was a slow transition for me to start listening to stuff outside of the realm of music that this site seems to thrive off of. But I am a bit older than I suspect the mean age of viewer-ship is on this monster, and I guess that with age you tend to diversify various tastes and try new stuff out mostly because it gets boring doing the same old things or listening to the same CDs over and over, year after year. So yeah, basically here I am reviewing something that I suspect would normally receive a handful of shit thrown at by the typical 16-year-old listener, but here I am also saying "fuck you" to those same kids. This review goes out to the weary early-to-mid-twenties demographic, and hopefully some open-minded young'uns as well, who are just sort of tired with the "musica regurgitata" found here all too often.

OK. So basically, Tegan And Sara are a "two-piece-singer-songwriter-duo-with-a-band” sort of deal. They are two sisters from Canada who play music that could easily be lumped in with the “hey look at me I could play Lilith Fair” category with a quick glance, but they are actually a lot more focused and refined than that placement would allow. The music they play on this record is very professionally layered and intricate, with perfect vocal harmonies and song structures ranging from slower acoustic tracks to almost new wave dance numbers. The instrumentation runs the gamut from totally “plugged in” songs to mostly acoustic songs to keyboard/moog-driven songs (with some help from the keyboardist of Weezer). The choruses are for the most part extremely infectious, with well-placed melodies and dual harmonies coming from the sister duo in well-calculated places. The first track “You Wouldn’t Like Me” is a super catchy song that starts off mostly acoustic and later kicks in with the lines “There’s nothing to live for when I’m sleeping alone” and “I feel like I wouldn’t like me if I met me.” The second track “Take Me Anywhere” picks right up where the first left off, upbeat and catchy, with a similar lyrical theme focusing on the desperation of love, which happens to be the main theme throughout the rest of the album as well. The remainder of the songs range from slow to mildly upbeat with many strong and memorable moments throughout, but the one main standout track on this album has to be track number 10, “Speak Slow.” This song is just flat out awesome. It is upbeat, catchy as hell, semi-danceable (think "drunk at 80’s night"), and I’m pretty sure it will end up on any mix tape I make in the next few years. The CD is also enhanced and it comes with a professionally edited video on the making of the album, which actually happens to be very interesting.

So like I say, if you want a replacement to your FEAR / OP IVY/ JUDGE / NOFX / SIMPLE PLAN / GORILLA BISCUITS records, look somewhere else. But if you want something different that’s actually really friggin' good and meaningful and well put together and not necessarily “punk” as it seems to be defined around here, definitely give this a try. It's great stuff.

Great great record. Catchy as hell.

I dig their last record a lot as well, although I find myself getting bored when I listen to their first 2 records.

This shit is good. I have been listening to these two for awhile now. The song writing is what pushes it over for me and alotta 21 shows, you can tell this isn't your little sister's pop shit.

As a fat, straight, white male I will tell you that I love this album. It's just a really good pop album.

I went to see them in Pittsburgh in support of this album and there were tons and tons of girls there. More hot girls than I have ever seen at any show. 2/3rds of them were probably lesbians though. That kinda sucks but whatever. They were good.

P.S. Communique guy, I enjoyed you guys too.

    good band.

    Posted by allison_le_gnome on 2005-08-20 16:55:26

I know two people who are really really really into this band. But they're both lesbians, so I think that might have something to do with it. I've heard most of "So Jealous," and I didn't really like it at all. However, their song "I Know I Know I Know" is unbelievably amazing.

What's so creepy about "psycho stalker lesbians?"

In fact, "psycho stalker lesbians" belong on the list (with ninjas, pirates, zombies and monkeys) of "things that make everything else more entertaining."

their fans creep me the fuck out. all these psycho stalker lesbians. forget it if you are a guy who enjoys their music, if you're not a lesbian that's been into them since day one you are not a true fan! psychos...

i've washed my hands of tegan and sara. i stuck by them for over 5 years now and they just keep letting me down. they are awful live! weither it's "solo" or with their "band."

I've com to the conclusion that only idiots with bad taste in music use the term "haters."

    Damn, that's a stupid word.

"punknews is the same website that gave From Autumn to Ashes a 5/5 and Good Charlotte a 4.5/5"

Yeah, but you remember that ANYONE WHO WANTS TO CAN SUBMIT A REVIEW on this site...

So, yeah, you have your idiots who need to spread the gospel of MTV's Warped Wednsday, but you also have people who review what they honestly like.

    Point: this review!

p.s., you can talk shit about pitchfork and punknews as much as you want (i don't take either of them too seriously)

but remember, punknews is the same website that gave From Autumn to Ashes a 5/5 and Good Charlotte a 4.5/5

I hate to say it, but anyone who's paying attention to Buddyhead isn't really qualified to comment about music (maybe having someone take a dump in his ears, but not music).

    Posted by the_other_scott on 2005-08-19 17:32:09

once again i'll rely on buddyhead to set the record straight

    "Tegan & Sara
    So Jealous
Are these chicks twins too? Do we have to deal with another sibling duo band here? FUCK. Next thing you know, the Olsen slores are gonna have a band too. As for Tegan & Sara, one of them plays power chords (ala Green Day) while the other one sings like Alvin & The Chipmunks over it. Yeah, you guessed right, they're Canadian.

"F-emo" = my new favorite genre name. Awesome!

    (I'd go with "indie pop/folk" for T&S)

    Posted by Dante3000 on 2005-08-19 12:14:31

Interesting comment by Senior Lush. The problem remains that even if their live show is killer, most people on this site still probably wouldn't go. The way I look at it an album is like a trailer for a bands live show. If the album is good, with any luck, the live show should be better. However, if the album is bad I don't hold out for the live show. That's why I sort of wish they'd do away with music videos and just make live footage of the single the band is releasing. I'd be much more interested to see...Say, A7X play "Bat Country" live than to watch a horrible zombified video. Same goes for T&S, if they are good I'd rather see the live footage than listen to the album. But I'm an asshole.

Sounds like you're SO JEALOUS. Hahahahahahha!

Actually, this music is taking over the anarcho-scene in my town. It's this boring-assed folk crap.

I'm sure they are really nice people, but this music is so boring. Maybe it strikes me as boring because when you have a show set up, you want to see a band that rocks. And usually some boring folk asshole sets up and plays for a long time.

    College kids suck.

    Great album, great review.

Some people have argued that "female-emo" is fundamentally different from "guy-emo" - which may or may not be true. Regardless, T&S write great songs that usually express universal emotions in interesting or totally unique fashion. Pitchfork.com died to me the day they reviewed this... and totally, completely missed the boat... not like that happens a lot or anything....

    Anyways, definitely good stuff.

Tegan is P Fresh's girlfriend. He's been working on turning her for MONTHS.

Posted by lushj on 2005-08-19 04:03:45

Wow, I'm shocked someone reviewed this for punknews.org.

I just did a tour working for the support band (Communique) on their July US tour, so I'm biased. These Canucks were ON every night and had some of the best on-stage banter (always different) I've seen. My tastes usually run harder and faster than T&S, but this cd has 5-6 genuine pop songs. I prefer their live sound to this cd- it's a bit too trebly for me- but in terms of the pop structure, they've got it down.

"Walking With A Ghost" may be inescapable, but like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and half of the Ramones catalog, it's a fucking pop masterpiece of a tune. It doesn't sound like those 2 bands, but the structure is... wow... too catchy for words.

The weird thing for band people watching them is that they double their vocals because they're identical twins. It's eerie, especially when Tegan breaks out and drops her voice lower to mix things up (she's the smoker of the two). They're both good guitarists and their band of 3 other Canadians is spot on.

In terms of going to their shows to score with chicks, unless you're female yourself most of the chicks in the crowd won't be interested in you. Quote from Albany NY security dude halfway through the show: "Man, when I saw all these chicks lined up I was excited, but... what can you do?"

So yeah, I'm biased. This record's too trebly for me, but it's still pretty good stuff. I put it like this to people who know me and my record collection- "Even I like their songs!"

Don't know if that "Walking with a Ghost" song is on here but that song gets on my last fucking nerve. It sounds nice enough until you realize that it's about 8 lines long just repeating over and over again. Then every time it comes on it just grates like a cheesegrater on your nipples.
