Ughhh.

Island Records, get your lawyers ready.

The Chicago pop-punk scene is officially the most musically incestuous one in America. To anyone remotely outside of the target market, seemingly every band that gains recognition on a national scale sounds just like the one came before it. Even inside of the demographic, pupils are surely aware of the extreme similarities. I'm convinced Las Vegas's Panic! At the Disco secretly reside from there; signed before the band had even played their first show thanks to Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz, he apparently doesn't mind that the band in question is ripping them off so blatantly it's downright laughable. The lead singer does his best Patrick Stump impression the entire record; the whole course of the record I have this mental image of the dude in the studio doing his best to match Stump's inflection note for note -- succeeding no less, but an amazingly direct bite regardless with his voice consistently raped with Autotune song in and out. Most of the track titles are long and/or aggrandizing (see: "There's a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought of it Yet"). It lyrically sounds like it came straight from FOB's pens.

Despite some seemingly random implementation of keyboards, synthesizers, and late in the record, "vaudevillian" piano, there isn't quite the dance element the band strives for; instead, it's just an annoying theme. With the vibe they're going for, the next band in line that could be compared to the record is the Academy Is..., and, my opinions of TAI aside, doesn't say much for originality or inspiration.

Here's the most ridiculous chorus of them all:

Well we're just a wet dream for the webzines / make us it make us hip make us scene / or shrug us off your shoulders / don't approve a single word we wrote
Hey guys, aren't you supposed to sort of, you know, have a record already released before you can bitch about the critics? Or is it because you know how badly you're aping Fall Out Boy with some lame gimmick to try and cover it up that you know the surefire onslaught of shit you're bound to get? Oh, wait, I guess I answered that question. Either way, congratulations on writing either the most arrogant or self-effacing couplet in music.

Being catchy is a quality that can only be stretched so far, and Panic! At the Disco doesn't seem to mind that their obnoxious, terribly unoriginal debut only has that one quality going for it. Putting out an album at the same time as something that sounds exactly like one of, if not the most popular band(s) going is just completely integrity void. A Fever You Can't Sweat Out is one of the most soul-deprived, emotionless records I've heard in a long, long time.

I agree with the part that their insanely long song titles kinda of "copy" Fall Out Boy. however, i don't think Brendon Urie sounds anything like Patrick throughout the album, Patrick;s voice is way higher than Brendon's. I actually thought that the album had a lot of originality, and was different from most of the music i had heard, i became instantly obsessed with it. Also, i don't think its "emotionless" at all. The song Camisado was written by Ryan Ross from personal experience with his father. That obviously had some depth to it, and wasn't just a "catchy" hit. This album is amazing, and i can't wait to hear their new one match 25

as i look down below me and see the sickening number of tens that all of the top 40 brain dead morons posted, i can't help but want to puke. the FOB clones on estrogen are really the crappiest band i've heard in a long time. the fact that they are even on punknews.org is a slap in the face of all that is punk. i hated their first single, but i will admit, it was catchy. their second single makes my ears bleed with its total lack of anything musically good. i love how idiots will just eat this crap up just because they dress like they just raided their grandma's attic and have long song titles for no reason at all. but whatever all you little pop loving kiddies like listening to these days, go ahead.

    My Score:

hmmm. I agree. They do remind me quite a bit of Fall Out Boy, and it does seem a little...unfair? i suppose, that they were signed to a major label before they even played a show. Usually bands have to work very hard to get signed to a major label, but they just get signed right off the bat just because they had some sweet connections.

but somehow, I still manage to enjoy them....they're more of a "dancing in your underwear alone in your room" type of band.

"panic at the disco are so unique and write incredible lyrics. yea who cares if they sound a little like fall out boy?"

    1. That makes no sense - they sound identical to FOB, so clearly aren't unique. And we dont need 2 shit bands around do we?
    2. If you want good lyrics, why no listen to a band like a perfect circle which run circles around pop bands lyrically?
    3. If your a 12 year old girl - enjoy this pop music...

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, April 17, 2006 at 7:53 AM (EDT)

Fallout boy suck, these are a clone of falloutboy, therefore they suck!

Stupid long song titles to try and sell their stuff. No musical talent, and they can't write lyrics to save their lives.

Mainstream music is getting worse and worse. I wonder how many of the fans actually read bands like FOB and PATDs lyrics and realize how stupid they are?

God Forbid Pete Wentz signs a band that sounds like FOB. look at the success they're having. Wentz is a business man, if FOB is making a butt load of cash with the music they enjoy making(remember, they strived to be hardcore, i wonder why the change of style? ...oh yeah, they wouldnt suck) why not sign a band for there fans, that they'll enjoy, and make Decaydence $$$ P!ATD isn't even from Chicago, they're from Vegas. what the hell is that about?

This is just a POV, there is no debate. Listen to the music YOU enjoy listen too. or break down the walls like i have and listen to more than one genre of music.

How can anyone claim this band is original? They sound EXACTLY like Fall Out Boy and FOB is a shitty pop band. Playing pop music isn't a bad thing when it's done right, but PATD is copying FOB who are awful at doing what they do. Brian's review is dead on, the PATD street team should take it elsewhere. While I don't think Panic! At the Disco is bad I do think that they sound A LOT like Fall Out Boy (which isn't a bad thing). These songs, although generally pretty good, sound like they could just be songs that didn't make it off the cutting table for From Under The Cork Tree.

this band is terrible. it could not be less original. its just another craze driven by teenage girls who like their music spoon fed to them. an no i am not a hardcore elitist i much prefer emo/punk music, but this stuff is just horrible.

panic! at the disco has honestly become my favourite band.
they're music is different from fall out boy and i really don't think the two bands should even be compared to each other.. but both panic! and fall out boy are amazing bands. p!atd's songs always make me smile and make my day. thank you panic! at the disco for creating wonderful music.

All who agree with this review, need to go hang themselves. P!ATD is the most amazing band, no they don't try to be like FOB, so what if Brendon "sounds" like Patrick, he doesn't try to. I know when I meant him, he sounded JUST like Patrick, but if he tried to sound like Patrick on the album, do you honestly think he would keep the voice and sound like him all the time. I don't think so, so you all can go suck dick. P!ATD is the best band ever.

even if they did, there are other bands that sound like fall out boy as well. why are you ripping on them so bad
whats the point of posting something about panic! at the disco on here just to see how many other people agree with you? their an awesome and sucessful band, and they worked hard to get to where they are. its a shame that you cant realize that.
a lot of people love them. so whats the point of telling them that they copied off of fall out boy. im guessing they could care less what you have to say cuz they love them anyway.

There's people out there that adore these guys and Panic! is not another whiny "Oh, my girlfriend hurt me and now I'm gonna slit my wrists" kind of band. They're upbeat with a tinge of rock, techno and acoustic. They are UNIQUE and are not like Fall Out Boy, even though I'm a fan of Fall Out Boy as well. I think you "haters" need to calm down and stop thinking that you know everything about music because you obviously don't. It's okay that you don't like Panic! At The Disco, but you don't have to be such assholes about it.

ok this is rediculous . to say that this album isn't original is bullshit . now ofcourse you're going to think it sounds like fall out boy when you know all the backgorund information but that's a bit of a placebo. that fact of tha matter is these guys DO hit the dance feel they are going for.no one can argue with that. the album has grown on me a hell of alot lately and the only thing i find unoriginal about it is the song titles.. apart from that.diso-popy rocky gold. i don't care if it's the same as liking some one who was not popular in the 90's .. i like the backstreet boys ..i like from autom to ashes...i like bjork... i like killswitch engage..WHO CARES if music was popular or not. like it if you like it. and i at first only kinda liked panic!, but now they to me are a great band with original lyrics ( YES THEY ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO FOB) and a new original feel.!

Finally, someone with more than half a brain made a post. These bands are no better than NSYNC or 98 Degrees in the late 90's. Pretty much summed up your entire scene:

"This is one of those "If you don't think anything is wrong, you're not paying attention" moments. Don't you people ever get tired of listening to the same tired ideas repackaged and released over and over again for you consumption? The corporate whores must look at you and be grinning ear to ear: a bunch of apathetic kids without a critical thought in their heads who'll listen to whatever is given to them and buy what they are told to buy. This album doesn't have an original note or thought on it, and the only comments you can come up with are of the "PATD is awesome!!!" or "The singer is so HOT!" caliber. Then if anyone calls them out for being souless and derivative, you say he or she is a dick and say they are hating on pop-punk or acting like they're too hardcore.

What happened to art? Are we that lazy and easily amused that we don't care for music that is challenging or that forces us to think? This music is easy, accessible, fun, etc. You really enjoyed listening to this album. Everyone has their own opinion but you think Panic! is great. These are the defenses you lay out for this music. They are the same defenses used by the kids who watch TRL, and you are just as unoriginal and conformist as they are. You dress the same, act the same, have the same haircuts, listen to the same bands. You all look like the guys in PATD, and they all look like the guys from the other bands you like. Let's call a spade a spade and admit that this is nothing more than pop, scenester, bubblegum music that has nothing to contribute.

Before you call me a dick or a hater or something equally insightful, I am not trying to be mean. I am just frustrated by how stagnant music is, and it's your fault for supporting this trash and not demanding anything better. You should be just as pissed as I am, but you are not. Why should a band try and do anything new or exciting when the money is in doing what has been done and sticking to the formula? For every interesting band like Blood Brothers or Trophy Scars, there are hundreds of PATD. Our generation should be embarrassed for how lazy and fruitless we are."

    My Score:

No shit the band would sound better if Fall Out Boy hadn't been around- at least they'd be SOMEWHAT original. I give them credit for the dance beats- I can actually see a crowd of people dancing to this, instead of awkwardly jumping up and down. However, aside from that, all we're given is the standard fare- and the standard fare is getting REALLY old. Do I have something against Pop-Punk? You bet your ass I do, and others have a right to as well, because honestly, it's getting old and repetitive, and it's a shame that all the bands are just trying to see who can get the most recognition for doing the same thing. However, focusing on Panic!, I can give them credit for the dance beats, and the horns in "But It's Better If You Do" are pretty cool. However, it's painful to see everything else staying the same.

And before I get a, "If you don't like it, you don't have to say anything" comment, I'm saying it because I want to voice my opinion. You have the same right to say it about bands you don't like. Bugger off.

For some reason, this review seems like nonsense. The whole thing seems like you are just being a snotty, rude and arrogant. And it all leaves me wondering- have you listened to the album?

This review seems like the thousands of others I've read on the band. I have looked for quality criticism and found none. So wehn, exactly, are you bunch of big-headed, jaded, overly critical jerks gunna shut up?

I have A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. I saw them live at the Nintendo Fusion Tour. They were absolutely amazing. And Fever is one of the best albums of 2005. It's expertly written and performed. And while Urie's vocals were overly-polished, I don't think it detracts of the album at all. The record is a work of genius, and and an amazing debut from what is sure to be one the most inventive, progressive and ground breaking bands in musical history.

I can't wait until next year when people like you are gushing over how awesome they are. Just wait. Soon you'll see that I, and the rest of Panic's fanbase, are right.

If fall out boy hadn't existed, this would have gotten 4 of 5 stars hands down. people need not get so worked up about the music they don't like, worry about the stuff you listen to. it's not worth the drama. sooner or later you'll understand. once you get all growed up, you'll get it.

okay, enough of the crying about how this band sounds like/doesn't sound like Fall Out Boy. THEY SOUND LIKE FALL OUT BOY!!! Lyricaly, vocally, and in the instrumental department. With that said they are very catchy. but how far does that go really? After you've listened to "The Only Difference..." and "Time to Dance" 85 times this cd is over and done with. Talented? Yes. Catchy? Very. Consistent and easy to listen to? NOT AT ALL

Yea. I completely agree--with a majority of the people on this forum, that is.This review is a piece of shit.

I bet in reality, this reviewer really digs the sound, but they decided to tear it apart to see how the fans would react. And guess what? You got a reaction. You're review couldn't be any further from the truth.

Panic! At The Disco is awesome. The sound is different and unique. I cannot think of any band that sounds like them at all. (and contrary to popular belief, I do not see any comparisons to Fall Out Boy besides the fact that Brendan sounds like Patrick, which is true, at times. But their music couldn't be any more different.) I actually think Brendan may have more vocal capablity than Patrick, in that respect.

They're going to go far. They have great potential for only "technically" being together for a year. And the level of creativity and lyrical ability at such a young age is amazing. These guys are the real deal. They have a great future ahead of them. I'm looking forward to it. I'd love to see P!ATD do well, and I know for a fact they will.

Down to business. It seems to me that Mr. Reviewer is out to get PATD for whatever reason. I'm not a hardcore punk-dude who's all "down" with the "scene" and all of that. I like a wide variety of music and usually don't give genre much consideration when listening to new music (except most country... especially anything with "lapsteel" ... I hate that shit.) Anyway, somebody pointed me to one of PATD's sites and I gave some of their mp3s and streams a listen... and I liked it quite a bit. The music is very good and they have a great intensity. I found myself a little annoyed at how they so frequently choose one line in each song to repeat twice in a row... but that doesn't ruin the album for me.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion and here's mine: It's good music.

This albun; however, will cause anyone "hardcore" to spontaneously vomit. Last one was for harder rock fans. This one is for the pop-punker in me.

Unfortunately, most reviewers *cough* seem to have a vendetta against pop-punk, you can'y please everyone. This is a great CD for a pop-punk fan, more orginal in than most in the genre. This albun; however, will cause anyone "hardcore" to spontaneously vomit.

WOW, Huge bash to the album with that article. I think your failing to realize that the industry thrives on knock offs, but nickelback and creed and theory of a dead man seem to be pretty popular. I dont care for falloutboy but I love panic, I personally think they have a seriouse hook to their music and their lyrics are FANTASTIC! yes I said it. Anyway thats just my opinion just like that article, its just and opinion...whats the point of being in the lime light with out being bashed by critics right?

    My Score:

For a first effort I think P!ATD did a great job. The first half of the album reminds me of FOB, but definately not the second. I love this album. Hopefully radio will pick it up and stop playing Nirvana!

they are their own band. they are not "fall out boy"
they have a total different feel, and kind of music. the only thing different is the voice.

    My Score:

Hmm, as much as I despise it when the reviewers on here are dicks and tear the shit out of some hard working bands, I did have to agree with this dick on a few points. When I first heard this album I actually thought the singer was the singer from Fall Out Boy, the resemblance between their voices is pretty astounding. Their musical style does resemble FOB's style aswell, though I wouldn't go as far as saying that they're copying them nor do they sound identical. I'm really not even a huge FOB fan at all, but I really really enjoed this album and I think it most definitely deserves more credit than this reviewer gave it.

They really were a wetdream for you guys here at punknews eh? You douche bags jump at the chance to say something controversial so you can get a bit of attention. I'm glad a band that everyone likes comes along so you can do that.

Before you ever listened to this album you knew how you would rate it, and so did I.

In my opinion, Panic! At the Disco is a pretty good band. You might have your opinion and want to voice it, but don't be so mean.

I knew this album would get a bad review here... Predicted it. When everyone is loving something you guys are still sitting on your non conformist pedistool and bashing it.

Stop trying to be so fucking unique.

um they wrote about critics..wow, obviously the critics are going to praise them or bash them..they werent bitching about them they were just pointing out the 2 things that a critic would do and maybe u shouldve added another part of the song that goes a little like "Just for the record, the weather today is slightly sarcastic with a good chance of: A. Indifference or B. Disinterest in what the critics say"

id like to think indie is a genre of music, cus all the bands that are considered indie all tend to have an overall feel. they may play a broad type of music within the indie genre, but i may also have nowhere to go with the rest of this comment. fuck

"if its not a genre of music then how come when you go to purevolume.com and search by genre indie is one of them? how come if you go to the shins myspace it says "type of label: indie"? just a bit confused on that one..."

Your the type of kid who had to have his parents teach him how to breathe arent you?

"jones the bones is a fagtard... same with all you other people here saying you hate this album so much.

If you don't like it... wow.... don't post about it 50,000 times. if you hate it so much, just ignore the review, and go off and listen to whatever music it is that makes you happy.."

how about this. if you like it, post once and state why. or dont. just post once. dont reply 50,000 times to everyone who doesnt like it and has posted once.

post your opinion and then be happy and listen
