Lee Ving didnt come out of the closet, he is married as far as I know. But in a related story I was watching the movie Clue, you know the one from like '85, and Lee Ving is in it. I almost shit, and then i had to sit through that dumb movie because i needed to see the credits to believe it. and Flea was in Fear at one point btw...

F.E.A.R. is the best computer game you'll play all year.

Requiem didn't even tell us that they're having the biggest story ever in Orange County, or whatever the fuck Diana was talking about.

Cory Gibson's attempt at a mohawk is worth checking out, though. Go do it.

lee ving was going for the 100% total shock rock thing. he got the idea after hearing about the whole sex pistols debacle and thought he could make a quick buck in music by being this outrageous punk rock band. and apparently according to his former bandmates, he wasn't this right wing character in real life. but who knows. what we do know is he was the ultimate self centered prick. the guy regularly took more than his share of money from gigs.

i love this band. one of the best. ian's story was a beast.

we played a show a few months agon and this little college chickie comes up to say hello and that she enjoyed the show. she said that we really reminded her of FEAR and asked if I had ever heard them.

i really wish i hadn't, cause it would have made a funnier story if some 17 year old chick turned this fat fuck in to a FEAR fanl.

It's doubtful that happened, though they're surrounded by rumors about all kinds of stuff. They were probably affiliated with motorcycle gangs and/or chapters of the Hell's Angels- for instance they dedicate a song or 2 to things like "Venice Chapter 2" on the live recordings that I mention below. I definitely get a biker vibe from them.

In terms of the KKK, Lee may be right-wing, but his band has had hispanics and blacks in it for much of the 1990s (and this decade). I don't think someone who played a Klan rally would turn around and have blacks and other non-whites in his band.

Very tight band musically speaking......as in they were not very loose at their playing....it was direct and an assualt on the sense. An incredible album, featuring one of the best punk rock vocalists of all time...

When Fear played on "Saturday Night Live," Ian, did you go down to "Saturday Night Live" and check it out in New York with Rollins and the gang?

Ian Mackaye: Rollins was not there. I'll tell you the story if you'd like to hear the story about that. At eight in the morning, some point in October, I got a call. I was driving a newspaper truck for The Washington Post at the time, so eight in the morning was brutal. It was Lorne Michaels' office, Lorne Michaels being the producer of "Saturday Night Live," and I get this woman, "Lorne Michaels' office, please hold." I was completely delirious. Lorne Michaels gets on the phone - "Hi, Ian, it's Lorne Michaels of 'Saturday Night Live,' I'm calling you because I got your number from John Belushi. He says that you might be able to get some dancers up here 'cause we want to have Fear on the show." I was completely baffled by this. "Pardon me?" "Hold on a second." John Belushi gets on the phone and he says, "This is John Belushi. I'm a big fan of Fear's. I made a deal with 'Saturday Night Live' that I would make a cameo appearance on the show if they'd let Fear play. I got your number from Penelope Spheeris, who did 'Decline of Western Civilization' and she said that you guys, Washington DC punk rock kids, know how to dance. I want to get you guys to come up to the show." It was worked out that we could all arrive at the Rockefeller Center where "Saturday Night Live" was being filmed. The password to get in was "Ian MacKaye." We went up the day before. The Misfits played with The Necros at the Ukrainian hall, I think, so all of the Detroit people were there, like Tesco Vee and Cory Rusk from the Necros and all the Touch and Go people and a bunch of DC people - 15 to 20 of us came up from DC. Henry was gone. He was living in LA at this point. So we went to the show. During the dress rehearsal, a camera got knocked over. We were dancing and they were very angry with us and said that they were going to not let us do it then Belushi really put his foot down and insisted on it. So, during the actual set itself, they let us come out again. If you watch the show - have you seen it?

say what you want about lee ving being an asshole and a sexist and a homophobe or whatever. but there is no denying the greatness of this album. i'm really surprised it hasnt been reviewed, its one of those classic punk albums...

i remember really liking fear until i watched "Decline of Western Civilization" and it was just them up on stage calling kids fags and spitting.

If I remember correctly I remember Ian talking about that show once in an interview.
It was an episode they wanted Belushi to host or something and he only agreed to do it if Fear could play the show.
I guess fear looked to make the show as chaotic as possible hence why they enlisted all the kids to fuck shit up.
I think I also remember Ian saying he wasn't a real big fan of that band but decided to go anyhow...Of course that last part could be a mistake on my part.

The music is still pretty off-beat on this album. The only problem with FEAR are the idiot fans that take the sexism seriously.

I have been trying to get into punk records that are a bit older, but not quite as popular as acts like the Ramones, Minor Threat, etc... Someone suggested this album to me and I really enjoy it.

The video is what I checked out first and it is amazing.

Belushi was a fan and got them set up with that.

That SNL video blew my fucking mind. I've seen maybe one performance that comes even close to having that level of crowd interaction.

Wow, that video was awesome. I wish shows were still like that. Now everything around here is just crowds of kids, barricades and assholes. I loved the local shows where every person got into it like this.

This morning I woke up humming "Bomb The Russians"- and slapped their 2nd record "More Beer" on the turntable. Both of these 1st 2 Fear records are essential. Afterwards, go to the live radio ones ("Fear Live for the Record" and "Living With Fear") or "American Beer".

This record is unstoppable, regardless of how lame some of the songs on this and later records are lyrically ("(The Trouble Today With Women Is) The Mouth Don't Stop" for instance). If you can dig the great band without taking the often-neandrathal lyrics as gospel, this is one of the best LA punk bands ever, hands down.

and in that video, please direct your attention to one young ian mackaye on the right side skanking/stagediving about 30 seconds in.

I saw Blink open for Fear in like 92 and you could tell they were scared shitless the entire set.

Not too well versed on Fear. I like what I've heard of em though.
I must admitt that a large portion of Fear fans I've met have been nearly obese and around their mid thirties.
