Published on September 5th 2001 How can words begin to describe how in-fucking-credible this album is? They can't. But I'll make a feeble attempt at it... Great lyrics, sing-a-long chroruses, oi-chants and amazing hooks have made "Do Or Die", the first full length album after the amazing "Boys on the Docks" ep, one of fastest instantaneous classics in punkrock history. Fueled by the angry voice of Mike McColgan and the unforgettable rasp of Ken Casey, "Do Or Die" boasts a collection of some of the most incredible oi/street/punkrock tracks ever recorded. Many present day Dropkick favorites were brought forth from this album including "Get Up", the inspirational "Never Alone", "Road of the Righteous", "Far Away Coast" and the crowd favorite to beat someone senseless too, "Barroom Hero". Also included is an acoustic version of Ken Casey's tribute to his working class grandfather and the other Irish worker subjected to mistreatment but bound by union pride, "Boys on the Docks". The album closes with "Skinhead on the M.B.T.A.", a simple tale of a skinhead and his misadventures on the public transportation system. This album holds memories for me, and I'm sure for others as well, of a different Dropkick Murphys. The Murphys of Mike McColgan and the non-stop drink, fight and rock spirit. I love the Dropkicks, always will, but without McColgan they will never be the same. "Do Or Die", the perfect final testament of an era gone but never forgotten. The Dropkicks will carry on. amazing album simply one of the best bands that are around hey MIKE HAS A NEW BAND CALLED THE STREET DOGS if you dig this ,get BLACKOUT ON JUEN 10TH o my god,this is a an amazing album. From the 1st note to the last drunken version of "skinhead" its the best. IRELAND 4EVER I dont know why people were such big fans of Mike. He was good, but he left because his heart wasnt into the music, and he couldnt handle touring. Al has a long background with the Bruisers, from all of his work I've heard, he has a much broader vocal range, and his stage presence is amazing. Everytime I sing, even though I hate to do it, I find myself trying to emulate his style. One of the best punk rock albums of all time. Ten times better than the following albums. After Mike Mcolgan left, the Dropkick Murphys would never be the same. "road of the righteous" is what got me into punk.......god bless the murfs i like the oldest shit better I would of gave it a zero but i gave it a one i guess for the title. It sucks. If you grew up with a drunk Irish father, you can relate. It gave me chills. Go see DKM in a small club, no security, no barriers, then you'll definitly see how great a band they really are. And Sure, the previous two albums aren't on par with Do or Die, but the live show is great. DKM are really made out to be top stuff The Dropkick Murphys are probably one of the most amazinbg bands punk rock has ever seen. I have never heard a bad murphys song in all my life. The newest album is the best i think but i just really love irish folk music so it suits me there. A dropkick murphys album should never score anything less than an 8 for 3 reasons... great music, they are from boston, and they are irish as hell... cept of course for Al barr but scottish is the closest thing. Fucking awesome. I loved this cd the first time i heard it and i still love it. I think that this is their best cd, i love the other 2 cd's too but this is way better. I would just like to say that ive been listening to this cd a lot. At first i didnt like it, and now that ive been listening to it a lot ive been loving it. This is on the top of my favorite cd's now. I'm strait edge but i dont mind the lyrics i am a very passive one. this band is nothing speacial to me. everyone loves them, but man, i don't like them near as much as say Rancid, Bombshell Rocks, or Flogging Molly. i dunno, Amazing Grace was cool i guess.- fathead Some Boston bands suck, but the Dropkicks are excllent. (Atleast on this album) buy this before anything else. This album is their best work. it just has that energy that their other two albums don't have. the guitars, bass, drums, and vocals blend together perfectly. simply a classic album. you can never go wrong with all the boston bands. if you do not have this album, buy this before all other dropkick releases! i like the new dropkicks but mike can not be replaced. to me, MM's vocals made this album. Although I have enjoyed the post-do or die cds, this is without a doubt one of the best cds in my collection. i feel fortunate to have seen the original foursome (onlty two are left now, i think?) when they opended for the bosstones in london (nov 97 - the garage). Perfect. As strange as it may seem every Murphys album is different. This album showcases the far more enjoyable vocals along with the mid tempo sing along anthems. Then with the Gangs All Here, an incredibly faster Murphys formed. And now with their new one, the Irish spirit is the most noticable part of their sound. However, this album is the one I find popping in my stereo the most; a truely incredible record. |
