Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)
Register to Vote: Rock the Vote, powered by Credo Mobile

Would it be unfair to label this as a "highly anticipated" album? I for one can say that after last year's Loud About Loathing EP and their standout track from the Rock Against Bush comp, None More Black had found their path. While I felt their previous album File Under Black was enjoyable as a poppy punk record, it seemed to lack cohesiveness. The band certainly made progress on the EP, and had a touch more aggression on the RAB track, so I should expect a solid album that flows well and hits hard, right? Well...maybe.

Before I say anything else, let me state that this album is "good." Not "great," not "exceptional," and (for the teenage readers) it doesn't "suck." It's just good.

From the get-go, you can just tell what to expect from this album. The opener "We Dance on the Ruins..." is a tight, poppy number, complete with "hey hey" backups, a half-time bridge, and a fading repeating pseudo-sing-along. Interestingly, the instrumental fade takes a good minute before ending, something NMB isn't really known for.

The next few tracks are traditional NMB mid-tempo pop-punk standards, "With the Transit Coat On" continuing the upbeat "hey hey" in the background. "Opinions and Assholes" serves as a break from the straight-up pop, as Jason's voice definitely leans towards a more aggressive tone, spouting "I'd like to spit it right at your face" before kicking back into the chorus. Following is the completely out of place, almost instrumental, super slow "I See London" that carries on for nearly four minutes. I can only imagine this serving as some type of intermission for the album.

"Who Crosses State Lines..." has a slight country-tinged sound, somewhat reminiscent of the `90s band the Refreshments (remember them?). The remainder of the album carries on as before, peppy punk tunes with Jason's trademark growl, highlighted by the fun number "You Suck, But Your Peanut Butter Is OK." I wasn't expecting the closing tune "Majestic," which is a true last song: slow, drawn out, building musically, ending dissonantly.

While None More Black may not have "progressed" musically from their first album (and Jason's lyrics are still hard for me to follow), they have certainly found a sound that they feel works best for them, as the similarity between most of the songs attests. Fans expecting a tougher sound or faster tempos will surely be disappointed, but what is left is a solid effort by a band that will surely garner new fans with their seemingly decided approach to songwriting.

When This Is Satire came out, i found it terribly boring and way too sloppy. I decided to give it another chance a month ago or so, and i was simply blown away by the brilliance of this record. It's one of the finest of the first half of 2006, no doubt.

"We dance on the ruins of the stupid stage" = written on Jay and Silent Bob's blueprint in Mallrats. I noticed that last night and thought "wow. That's random and cool."

3 stars for the 3 out of 13 songs I liked. Too many slow songs. If they whole CD sounded like "You suck! But your peanut butter is okay" or "With the Transit Coat on" it would be good but I just don't think jayson has the same energy with this album as he did with the previous.

Wow. I picked this up yesterday, and it's blown me away. At first, I was skeptical about a few songs such as "Wallpaper" and "I see London" because initially, they sound awkward and avoid conventional melodies and such. But everything that first sounded sketchy is growing on me fast.

"Zing Pong" steals the show in this album. Brilliant song. Great record.

    My Score:

Ok, I've given it the dozen listens. Under My Feet is really good. Opinions and Assholes has its moments. A few other songs do too. Overall, though, very few songs are consistantly great, and some (Majestic and holy crap I See London) are just awful. Overall not unpleasent to listen to, because the good moments are as good as any band around now, but yeah... if you liked File Under Black (which I absolutely did), you might be disappointed.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, May 4, 2006 at 12:25 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

i've come to the conclusion that at first listen it isn't that great. But after probably 10 or so listens it gets better, and then add in the lyrics and it gets reeeeaaaaally good. Not great, but it gets probably a 9.5 at best, but you really have to listen and let it grow on you.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, May 4, 2006 at 12:11 AM (EDT)

alright serious, You Suck! But Your Peanut Butter Is OK, is it critizing Against Me! or their fans?

and fucking We Dance On The Ruins Of The Stupid Stage is such an awesome song. And yeah, to a point i'm getting tired of bands complaing about being in a band and how hard it is. It just seems like they are singing about it more, but musically this song is awesome and they lyrics kick ass so its great.

R3venge_Therapy: your review is much better than mine.

On the progression thing, I'm listening to it again, right now, for maybe the 20th time this week.
It just sounds (to me) like the same approach to songwriting as there was on FUB and LAL.
    Again, that's just me.

musically, it's a huge progression. they sound entirely different musically, and that's what i'm talking about. it's more mid-tempo and less based on fast-as-fuck songs that move a mile a minute. i wasn't trying to say my review was better, but i was trying to say that they don't sound like the same band musically. the score doesn't piss me off, it was just a couple things that were mentioned seemed like you hadn't listened enough. i understand if you don't think it's that great.

I can see the whole "Peanut Butter" being about Against Me!, but is it critical of the band, or is it mocking the people who criticize the band? In a lot of ways, I see comparisons between this album and Former Clarity. They have both traded in intensity on their former albums/bands for more melodic, slower songs. On both albums, there are songs about the struggles of being in a band. (Stupid Stage and Unprotected Sex). I don't see how NMB can rightfully give AM! shit for doing lots of the same things they are doing.

I disagree on the progression statement. There definitely is progression. File under Black was a full on straight forward punk cd... Satire has a lot of new flavor some of which carried over from the Load About Loathing EP, which I thought was a big step forward musically. Either way, I think this CD is better than FUB and LAL.... maybe it's because I played those two out, but it is a really really excellent CD.

Honestly, the only part of the review I really take exception to is the claim that they haven't progressed musically. This sounds nothing like FUB, and it's a further exploration of the classic rock influences that were at the forefront of LAL. i honestly can't say what my score is, because I never know how I feel about a NMB album until about a month after I got it.

This is a very good album. As for the reviewer, he's entitled to his own opinion, I just don't agree with it. Don't sleep on this one!

P.S. - Are the lyrics in the liner notes of the retail version?

so you disagree with a score.

what makes a bad review is not describing what the album sounds like and trite writing style.

"Brian and I determined we are the only people on Earth that prefer File Under Black over Loud About Loathing..."

no, i'm going to have to agree with you there. I love File Under Black, and when i heard Loud About Loathing i was like, yeah this is really good, but not File Under Black. which is a good thing, i don't want the same thing over and over, but i liked File Under Black more.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-05-02 10:09:18

Everyone'll think I'm an idiot, but...
    None More Black>>>Kid Dynamite.

Anyway, is there some real, obvious Lucero influence I'm not hearing, or is everyone on here just comparing it to Lucero because it's the only stuff they listen to that's even slightly country?

"Brian and I determined we are the only people on Earth that prefer File Under Black over Loud About Loathing..."

No way dude, tons of people prefer File Under Black to Loud About Loathing! I thought I was in the minority prefering Loud about Loathing.

give it a few more spins... and you won't be able to stop.

I originally had this pegged as a "meh" album, but after a couple of extra listens, this is one of my favorite punk albums to come along in a long time. The songwriting is odd, unique and eventually endearing.

Maybe I'm crazy, but is "Opinions and Assholes" a jab at those bitching that NMB doesn't sound like Kid Dynamite?

As for this album, the good songs are REALLY good, whereas there is some filler.

Brian and I determined we are the only people on Earth that prefer File Under Black over Loud About Loathing...

    My Score:

"Interestingly, the instrumental fade takes a good minute before ending, something NMB isn't really known for."

What's Inside Bone from their first Seven Inch had a 2 minute instrumental ending. Both songs are first track and both of them are amazing.
    -------------------------------------------------------
Don't forget, "Drop The Pop", "Never Heard Of Corduroy", "Banned From Teen Arts", "The Affiliates", "Nods To Nothing", "Peace On Mars Cuz You Ain't Gonna Get It Here", and "I'll Buy You The Fucking Single".
I don't know what you'd call the exits to all those songs, but they're all pretty similar (not the actual notes of music and such, but with the longer musical outro).

This reviewer did a piss-poor job at reviewing this great album. I like it better than their last two releases, and better than everything Kid Dynamite.
Actually, I'd give everything Kid Dynamite and NMB (before this) a 9, and this a 9.5.

    Fuck y'all.

agreed, this is one of the best records this year. with the exception of that thing in the middle of the album, its fucking great. if you think this is just mediocre, you probably havent listened to it enough, or are to dense to get with the lyrics

You Suck, but Your Peanut Butter's OK is a killer song. I think for better or worse, NMB finally came out of Kid Dynamite's shadow for me with this disk and subsequent live show. (Yes, I'm still talking about that performance, it's been the only one I've seen in a loooooooong time.)

Oh, and the Loud About Loathing EP is amazing.

The problem I always seem to run into with NMB is this, It's Jason, and his voice always conjurs images of Kid Dynamite, and it is so unfair to think of that greatness when compared to NMB's standardness.

I loved the Refreshments. Fizzy Fuzzy Big And Buzzy is a killer rock album that can probably be found in every cutout bin in America. The follow-up, The Bottle And Fresh Horses, wasn't bad, either.

"i absolutely love this album. one of my favorites of the year. it has a "searching for a former clarity" ness to it."

That's probably why I don't like it. SFAFC was AM!'s worst release and this is easily NMB's worst release. I really like when NMB do fast aggressive songs but this "lets slow everything down" deal isn't working for them in my opinion. When I saw these guys in Feburary, they played a couple newer tracks and i was not pleased with it as like I am now after hearing the album. Well, atleast Paint It Black's recent release totally kicks ass.

Score for Defiance, Ohio's show on Saturday.

I like this album. True there are some Lucero vibes in this one that might make fans a little bit puzzled. But it's not that bad a record to be called a disappointment.

However, I wouldn't be hailing this as the best Fat release out this year. They went towards a positive direction and maybe the next record would step it up a notch.

While None More Black may not have "progressed" musically from their first album (and Jason's lyrics are still hard for me to follow)

HAVEN'T PROGRESSED?!!! are you nuts?!! man, i never get mad about reviews, especially on this site, but this is so far off base that it's almost insulting.

and you can't understand his lyrics? why not? i think they're very cleverly written, as they always have been, even in Kid Dynamite, and they convey his feelings prettly clearly, just in a unique style. man. whatever.

I disagree, best album of the year by far is Defiance, Ohio's The Great Depression. I believe the reviewer did a very nice job, its just that the album was lacking overall.

    My Score:

You know, the new alt-country-via-Lucero vibes, I'm not minding them at all. But this entire middle section is really just...flat. The songs are drastically missing that energy and conviction of the earlier stuff like "Banned from Teen Arts," "Everyday Balloons," and the RAB track you mentioned. Most of the songs are decent, a few legitimately good ("We Dance...," "You Suck!," "Majestic"), but there's just very little fun and fire otherwise.

I'd call this a disappointment, but Loathing was only inches ahead. Totally agree with the score.
