AFI have always been a staple to the punk community since releasing Answer That and Stay Fasionable on Nitro back in the mid-`90s. However, if you have been following this band's career you've likely asked yourself at some point, "What the hell has happened to these guys?" Some feel that since the release of Sing the Sorrow, their major label debut on Dreamworks, that they have become a commercial success nightmare. So upon watching this live DVD, I went into it with little hopes of it being a satisfying live show considering that a large portion of the songs responsible for my love of AFI aren't here in this package.

When the concert starts with a very atmospheric tempo to set things off, Davey belts out some of the smoothest vocals on the first track, "Prelude 12/21." If you have ever seen AFI live then you're probably familiar with his ridiculously entertaining form of crowd participation. The vocals the crowd shouts can almost be heard over Davey himself, as they sing along to the songs on this here set. I personally thought that Decemberunderground was their weakest effert to date, but when "Kill Caustic" is performed so energetically and as loud as any respected punk song, you begin to realize AFI are truly a great live band. Hunter and Jade also play along Davey with such charisma and enthusiasm. It really looks like they played to the best of their ability, and I respect that a lot.

A few songs later, Davey pulls a song out of Shut Your Mouth & Open Your Eyes. Does the song "A Single Second" ring a bell? And to top it all, he actually has Nick 13 (of Tiger Army fame), sing alongside him in what is such a treat because the song sounds almost studio quality.

As for the rest of the set, you'll get to hear a perfectly done "Death of Seasons," synth and all, as well as fan favorite "God Called in Sick Today," which might be their best song put to disc. To make it even better however, Davey gets in the crowd during that song and is lifted up to sing a chorus so loud that i think Pantera would say turn the noise down.

All in all, this is a worthy purchase for any AFI fan, and if you don't have the money to spend on this, just catch them live when they come to your town -- it will be just as good. But if you truly can't stand their newer endeavors, simply go pick up a copy of Very Proud of Ya or the classic Black Sails in the Sunset.

AFI is the best band, I love when Davey gets into the crowd and I laughed when he got fipped over, (Sorry Davey.) I alsothought it was funny in kill caustic when Davey does the strange move that I can't explain. That probably was the best AFI concert to date

Fan fiction is fucking disturbing. Ew.

As far as AFI goes... I don't know. There are a couple of newer songs that I like, and I liked Sing the Sorrow but... the older songs are so much better.

The tattoo in that blog is great. "Can you tell me what stopped the rain".

Terrible lyrics from a terrible song. I can already see where Blaqkaudio is going. The same generic, wannabe Cureish shit that AFI is doing, only without guitars and with terribly generic beats.

"dude... compare Art of Drowning to Decemberunderground...
Art of Drowning still had a bunch of shorter faster punk songs , now AFI is just synth pop with the occasional harder song (affliction and kill caustic)"

It seems like you forgot that Sing The Sorrow even existed. Decemberunderground makes sense from an album to album basis, just as Sing The Sorrow makes sense coming right after The Art of Drowning.

The bad thing about how awful AFI's new stuff is, is that it made me question why I ever liked them in the first place. Now I can't decide whether I just outgrew them, and subsequently still respect the older material (well, ok, Black Sails To Sing The Sorrow at any rate), or whether it was all just a horrible blip on my taste radar. Which sucks, because they used to be one of my favourite bands.

Either way, this band has never come up with a single decent lyric, ever.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 23, 2007 at 2:40 PM (EDT)

What do they say in their blogs? I'm curious, but I don't want my coworkers to see me on AFI's MySpace page. Not because I'm not supposed to be online, but because they would just think I was really lame.

If anyone cares what's on Jade and Davey's Myspace blogs and judges their band because of it, that's pretty lame.

its lame to judge a band by what their members say publicly?

so i guess if a band runs their mouth saying "fuck fags and niggers" i should just let it slide? because what jade and davey talk about is just as offensive and insulting to anyone's intelligence

That being said, this DVD is pretty cool. Great editing, sounds great and shows AFI at their best. Jade IS pretty sloppy but he's always been and honestly, they're energetic enough. Who really cares about how tight a band that plays this kind of music is anyways?

I used to LOVE AFI but this DVD brought back some good memories. One of the best live DVD's I own.

Wow, remember when these guys actually put out a good record. Me neither. Answer That and Stay Fashionable is definitely their best shit. Blacks sails was alright, but come on...a classic. I don't think so. Davey used to have a fucking mowhawk, now he looks like a little bitch with all that fucking makeup and the hair...oh my god. He looks stupid. But I guess thats what sells. Most of their fans these days never even heard of them before the last release. Now All their shows are filled with ignorant kids and jocks that really don't know any thing about them, all they know is they saw them on mtv and it's cool to like them. Stupid kids! Listen to some real punk rock.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 23, 2007 at 1:11 PM (EDT)

answer that and stay fashionable and very proud of ya are complete garbage. thank god they evolved out of that, but the direction on their new album sucks too. way too 80's and poppy. they had 3 solid albums but they hold little appeal to me anymore.

I dont know how anyone can be an AFI fan after reading the kind of bullshit and crap that Jade and Davey spout in their myspace blogs

i mean, i know that leaves me open to why the fuck was i reading it in the first place, but seriously these two guys talk about some of the most superficial shit and seem like some of the most closed minded people out there when it comes to anything that doesnt involve eating plants and shopping for purses and listening to ABBA

anyway, i would but this if it was a live album maybe, but its hard to look at davey nowadays, if i want to watch something comically disturbing i'll go buy that Kane movie

saw them live this summer and it was still an awesome show, despite the Decemberunderground domination. The closing of "God Called In Sick Today" was one of the best live concert moments of my life.

"Hunter and Jade also play along Davey with such charisma and enthusiasm. It really looks like they played to the best of their ability, and I respect that a lot. "

... so Adam (drummer) just sucks? If anything, he holds shit together, because both times I've seen AFI (and in all the live footage I have), Jade plays pretty sloppily (listen to him, he can NEVER nail the intro to Leaving Song Part II) and shit. Most of that is because he's throwing himself all over the stage, but even so, Adam needs some recognition, he's a good drummer and sings backing too.

I haven't seen this DVD and don't really think I need to. I saw AFI last October and seemed to be the only person over 20 there, and nobody around me knew what the fuck was going on when they played Totalimmortal (or even Days of the fucking Phoenix).
