Whoops, yeah, we’ve been sleeping on this review for a while. I think it was the honky-tonk chords that open the first track on Fake Problems’ pseudo-compilation EP, Spurs and Spokes / Bull > Matador, that really threw me off and caused me to long-ignore the thing. Sure, that stylistic vibe is incredibly persistent throughout the release but what I inexplicably failed to realize is how tongue-in-cheek it is. Does that necessarily make it better? Well, sort of, but it helps that the band more often than not delves into poppy and jangled punk rock with lots of little creative flares and alt-country overtones only somewhat like the comparison you know you were going to find mentioned at least once in this review: Against Me!.

Ok, it was HALF a compliment though. Maybe the vocalist just needs to grow into his style... =) Their vocalist is rubbish. They have some nice riffs, however. I say ditch the current singer, hire someone that doesn't suck, and then they'll probably make it somewhere. I think if you came to Naples and stayed a night at The Perry House, your preconceptions would change drastically. Oh, damn. The "rich parents" card. Obviously, it makes them bad people. I would say something witty, but instead, I'll just stick with "you should really work on not being a moron and probably stop judging people based on stupid metrics that have no bearing." Also, I'll throw in "it's assholes like you that grow up so elite in whatever 'scene' you choose, only to get desk jobs, fancy German import cars and a fierce red-wine fueled alcohol addiction by the time you're thirty." Dante, at some point you are going to need to learn to spell Tom's last name correctly. Dante, at some point you are going to need to learn to spell Tom's last name correctly. Anyone ever notice how Brian almost never rates anything over 3 1/2??? 1) They don't take their own lives too seriously. They don't seem (as a lot of bands in this genre seem) to carry the whole weight of the world on their shoulders. 1) They don't take their own lives too seriously. They don't seem (as a lot of bands in this genre seem) to carry the whole weight of the world on their shoulders. Really good band. They have enormous potential, and at some point, or going to release that album that blows us away. When I first listened to the steam up on punknews, I wasn't impressed. But after seeing them (with Against Me and The Riverboat Gamblers in Eugene, OR) I've given them another listen, and I enjoy it. Not sure what I was missing before, Degreed or Denounced is a wicked song though. I got Spurs & Spokes and I have to say they aren't really that Against Me!-ish at all. I'd describe this as country fair music if we had those up here. The music has a more country-fried feel too it closer to This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb but not really sounding like them either and adds a slight carnival feel. I just can't listen to this for more then one minute and stay interested. Something original would be nice. Can anyone point me to some good HC/punk/crust record stores in Boston? I'll be in the area, and want to waste some $. I did a quick search and came up w/ ReGeneration records... Thanks how far our bodies go is going to rule so hard these guys were so good in santa cruz that i went home and ordered this EP the next day. i really dig em. Casey has the single best dance move I've seen in my life, and Chris overall is one of the best dancers going. This band is amazing and all you kids are just gunna cry about it cause you'll never be in a good band. waaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh these guys impressed me live, one of the better sounding young bands i've seen...definitely have their own style "more bands selling anarcho-punk. great." I love these guys, even if they are fucking suits. Even if you're worried they're just some other anarcho/punk/folk band (ya know all those) they have at least two things, in my opinion, that set them apart. It's refreshing, it's well wrought and it makes me look forward to their full-length. year and a half til this band is on a major, they have no soul. I absolutely loved this EP... one of my favorites from last year. more bands selling anarcho-punk. great. |
