Whoops, yeah, we’ve been sleeping on this review for a while. I think it was the honky-tonk chords that open the first track on Fake Problems’ pseudo-compilation EP, Spurs and Spokes / Bull > Matador, that really threw me off and caused me to long-ignore the thing. Sure, that stylistic vibe is incredibly persistent throughout the release but what I inexplicably failed to realize is how tongue-in-cheek it is. Does that necessarily make it better? Well, sort of, but it helps that the band more often than not delves into poppy and jangled punk rock with lots of little creative flares and alt-country overtones only somewhat like the comparison you know you were going to find mentioned at least once in this review: Against Me!.

Well, “Heat on the Feet” does find itself shuffling on that same stutter-step pace á la “Don’t Lose Touch,” and their earlier material surely has that slop-filth tempo and composition. But let’s not get crazy; it feels like Fake Problems do have their own identity within the relatively nameless pile of folk-punk bands beginning to sprout up. Sure, even the mere mention of their name conjures of images of Defiance, Ohio’s “Petty Problems” for me, but Fake Problems’ fresh-faced, snotty approach manages to sit alongside cheeky balladry in a unique way. When Chris Farren snarls “‘I’m not sure I agree with anything you say but I’ll defend [it] with my life’ -- no, I don’t care!,” it’s a little silly but still poignant, while “Oh, Your Silver Heart” is a twang-inflected lovesick ballad that makes for a fine near-centerpiece.

Here on Spurs and Spokes / Bull > Matador, Fake Problems pair their 7-inch with re-recorded songs from the now out of print Watching the Bull Get the Matador; while Farren does attempt a little more of a whiskey-soaked voice in the second half the whole thing feels cohesive and well-rounded. The way they’ve progressed Fake Problems seem poised to break out of their shell and explode with their next full-length.

Ok, it was HALF a compliment though. Maybe the vocalist just needs to grow into his style... =)

Their vocalist is rubbish. They have some nice riffs, however. I say ditch the current singer, hire someone that doesn't suck, and then they'll probably make it somewhere.

I think if you came to Naples and stayed a night at The Perry House, your preconceptions would change drastically.

Oh, damn. The "rich parents" card. Obviously, it makes them bad people. I would say something witty, but instead, I'll just stick with "you should really work on not being a moron and probably stop judging people based on stupid metrics that have no bearing." Also, I'll throw in "it's assholes like you that grow up so elite in whatever 'scene' you choose, only to get desk jobs, fancy German import cars and a fierce red-wine fueled alcohol addiction by the time you're thirty."
    Go to Hell.

Dante, at some point you are going to need to learn to spell Tom's last name correctly.

In other news, I hear someone (the Mayor) (who sure did rule my spring break) got a killer haircut.

I am so jazzed to see this band again on (positive) (tattoo)Tuesday.

I don't know why this comment makes me want to clarify but I'm not the guy who was like, "blah blah, rich parents. Blah blah Tom gable (sic)." I don't know why but I really don't want to be associate with someone who seems so full of hate for a group of really nice guys or who can't spell Tom Gabel.

Anyone ever notice how Brian almost never rates anything over 3 1/2???

    1) They don't take their own lives too seriously. They don't seem (as a lot of bands in this genre seem) to carry the whole weight of the world on their shoulders.

    -Dante

They don't care because they're little pricks who are supported by their rich parents, none of them have had to do a damn thing to get where they are, they just got lucky Tom Gable is from the same town.

yea we sound just like Against Me!

Posted by chokingvictim on 2007-03-30 21:33:28

Really good band. They have enormous potential, and at some point, or going to release that album that blows us away.

When I first listened to the steam up on punknews, I wasn't impressed. But after seeing them (with Against Me and The Riverboat Gamblers in Eugene, OR) I've given them another listen, and I enjoy it. Not sure what I was missing before, Degreed or Denounced is a wicked song though.

Posted by JonDaley on 2007-03-30 17:32:40

I got Spurs & Spokes and I have to say they aren't really that Against Me!-ish at all. I'd describe this as country fair music if we had those up here. The music has a more country-fried feel too it closer to This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb but not really sounding like them either and adds a slight carnival feel.

I just can't listen to this for more then one minute and stay interested. Something original would be nice.

Can anyone point me to some good HC/punk/crust record stores in Boston? I'll be in the area, and want to waste some $. I did a quick search and came up w/ ReGeneration records... Thanks

Casey has the single best dance move I've seen in my life, and Chris overall is one of the best dancers going.

This record is super good. The next one will be super duper good.

    "more bands selling anarcho-punk. great."

more meaningless genre terms, and the people who will defend them to the death. great.

I love these guys, even if they are fucking suits. Even if you're worried they're just some other anarcho/punk/folk band (ya know all those) they have at least two things, in my opinion, that set them apart.
    1) They don't take their own lives too seriously. They don't seem (as a lot of bands in this genre seem) to carry the whole weight of the world on their shoulders.
    2) Casey (though small) is a fucking stellar guitar player and his style is perfectly suited for this band.
But hey, I'm just some douche, what do I know?
