I really enjoyed the kidcrash album, but if they are gonna bitch about getting a 9/10 (which is an incredible review, i would honestly give 9/10 to what 10 albums, and I'd probably only give a 10/10 to possibly 3) they really need to revisit the reasonings behind starting a band.

nah man its all good. i think its pretty damn to cool to hear from a band i admire, no matter what they're saying.
yea and the production is actually pretty damn fine.

once again, sorry to matt. please take buster's words with a grain of salt. of course i don't need to tell that to anyone who's met him in real life, but for those who haven't, he speaks with uncensored passion. i thought buster did an okay job of prefacing his indigestable post, but apparently not well enough. everyone else in the band thought this review was really nice and appreciated it, and that was the end of their reflection. we've been a band for over 7 years and are pretty jaded as far as everything that has to with being in a band besides the actual music itself. sorry if that exhaustion and frustration manifests itself in a seemingly fucked up, nonsensical, rude, or arrogant way. whatever...thanks for any kind words about our music.

This band comes off pretty fuckin dumb. The guy posted a 5 page critique towards a kid who just gave their record a 9 out of 10. Way to take a compliment.

i can't tell. i heard two versions of record, brought back from the north atlantic dudes, one with vocals and one without. both of them were good and had similarities to isis and at the drive in. why are band members commenting on a review? is there another band called kidcrash that is out there?

That review of the review was the funniest post I've ever seen here. That other post by the band was just sort of lame though.

what i meant was i don't know why the person made a deal about cassette tapes when this review is for the cd format of the release. it is available on cassette and vinyl as well, of course.

oh, and this is available on cassette so steven is wrong about that. steven is right, however, buster is only 1/4 of our band, but that's pretty obvious because there's four people in the band. once again, everyone has the right to say whatever the fuck they want. i hope by "disregard", steven meant "read and make your own judgements". now that's punk!

hey, this is alex from kidcrash. after reading buster's review of the review, i thought i'd make some comments of my own:

first off, i'm really glad matt gave us a really nice review, but i found some of it problematic. buster has all the right in the world to point them out, but i don't think it was fair of him to attack matt, the reviewer. i hate reviews in general and don't think they are of much use in a culture where music is so readily available. here's my ideas on the criteria for a valuable review:

1. the review has to put forth as much effort as the musicians who created the music that's in question.

2. the reviewer has to be self-critical. "why am i writing the review in the first place?", might be an appropriate question.

3. the review should be exclusively discuss form, not content (what the songs are "doing", rather than what they're "saying"), or be a detailed and loving description of the music.

4. ithe review should stray from making comparisons or placing the music in categories. this is my main concern, and i feel like it really reduces the music in so many ways.

5. i could go on and on...

matt's review certainly fulfills some of my personal requirements for even trudging through the endless heap of reviews that exists on the internet today, and i'm happy to say that, but it also fails in many ways too. anyone has the right to say whatever they want, but they should be willing to accept criticsm and responsbility as well. i'm confident that buster and matt are both capable of that, which is why they choose to parade their opinions in a public domain.

The only people that have cassette players are emokids making mixtapes and people that want to listen to their old cassettes.

The sound quality of tape is not even close to that of vinyl or cd.
Cd is much more conventional and durable, not to mention convenient in being able to skip tracks.

Haha looking at the Kidcrash "review of the review" post makes me not even want to illegally download this album whether it's good or not. That can't be a serious response to pretty damn positive review of their album (9 out of 10). I lol'd at the end when he talks about the bands he wants to be compared to.

If that's a serious post, I've lost all respect that this band gained of mine with those demos.

i dont want to defend our album. i just want to review your linguistic work like you did to ours....

Lately for me, emo has been keeping me busy with some of the most passionate and overall rewarding music I've set my ears to listening. And a lot of that can be credited to a little album called Jokes, by a little band called the Kidcrash. A few years back they released New Ruins, a pleasurable little record that flirted with both Midwest indie-emo, highly technical math rock, and pop-punk. But what was lacking on New Ruins was an overall push, a key feeling of emotion and intensity that can really make the band. This push was goaded into the band with their second release, Jokes.

yo, its called a click track for a complex mathy set of songs that have huge tempo variations. so the producer makes you pick one tempo and play all the parts at that speed and all the parts sound whack, lose intensity and dont rock for shit, unless you dig some mediocre midwest rip off emo pop album. because the production made it sound like every other midwest band who recorded at that studio, and clean cut pop. the time sucker punched the intensity. right a fast slow quick change song then record it at 120. if youve been practicing you can just get used to the parts at that one lame speed and it blows.

The first thing to say about Jokes is the overall transformation the band went to create this record. Gone are the charming, almost scenebandesquethatwouldblowawayMotionCitySoundtrack vocals,

HEY DOPE. THERE WERE 2 RELEASES BETWEEN NEW RUINS AND JOKES. THE VOCALS SHIFTED TO THROATIER VOCALS WITH SINGING. THEN THE DEMO GOT SHOUTIER WITH LESS VOCALS. AND JOKES HAS MORE OF THE NON RETARDED HIGH RANGE VOCALS THAT COULDNT GET HIT AND ONLY SOUND HALF DECENT BECAUSE OF AUTOTUNING, WHICH IS PATHETIC, AND WE DIDNT WANT. THINGS JUST HAPPENED TO DO US OUR FIRST TIME A REAL STUDIO. WE SPENT 10,000 WE ALL SAVED UP AND ONLY GOT TEN DAYS AND COULDNT LISTEN TO THE FIRST MIX UNTIL THE DRIVE HOME.

and are replaced with dense, incredibly passionate screams. Gone is the deadpan, boring rhythm section, and in its place is a frantic explosion of pure technicality and a steady beat that's not hard to follow. On this level, and on this view of the record, they're a totally different band.

ACTUALLY WE ARE THE SAME BAND. BUT I HAD TO STRIP MY DRUM PARTS BECAUSE OF TEMPO ISSUES, AND STROKE CONSISTENCY ISSUES BECAUSE IF I HAD SPENT MORE THAN THE 30 HOURS I DID ON THE DRUMS THE ALBUM WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN DONE. SO I HAD TO STRIP IT DOWN. BUT IF YOU LISTEN TO THE DEMOS THE RHYTHM SECTION WASNT BORING, AND THE SONGS WERENT BORING LIVE, ITS JUST A 10 DAY SNIPPET OF A WIERD FUCKED STUDIO RECORD. AND ITS NOT LIKE MILITIA GROUP OF SOME SHIT SENT US THERE. WE JUST WANTED A REALLY GOOD SOUNDING ALBUM FOR OUR FIRST REAL RELEASE(NOT COUNTING THE 5 OR 6 FROM BEFORE NEW RUINS)

But, to an extent, they're not all that different. What can be regarded as kept is the band's technicality. If anything, the technicality is at an entirely new level. The guitarists are jumping off the wall with impressive dynamics that have the energy of a sugar-high nine-year-old. In songs like "Life Was Real, Vital, Urgent, Important/Bum Guts," the band can barely keep up with themselves in terms of dynamics. What separates them from most bands is the amount of emotion they put into their playing. I don't think I've seen so much introspection in a band with so much technicality. The dynamics between clean tones and all-out chordal aggression seems so limitless, and it gives them much space to expand and delve further into their chill parts (which are one of the leftovers from New Ruins. And while the parts on this record are much more heartfelt and emotional, there is no denying the ultimate truth of what’s leftover from their Midwest indie days). Rarely does the band carry out a riff too long, and if they do, they change it around by putting it in different keys and tones.

OR BY JUXTAPOSING THE POLY-RHYTHMIC POTENTIALITIES OF EACH MELODIC AND RHYTHMIC SYSTEM.

What’s probably the album's meditation is the "epic" "Ron Ghousley's Fucked Up Dream," a heavy dynamic of a song that keeps changing and progressing from heavy to light to technical for over eight beautiful minutes; the band jump from fast-paced technicality, to intense riffing and screaming, to beautiful breakdowns filled with "twinkly" guitars, all while keeping a passionate cathartic approach that many bands lack. Every piece of instrumentation is right on target, with the band hitting note after note beautifully, and keeping everything lush and on track. The screams are subtle, but overall very effective. They're back in the mix, but the singer seems to be screaming to fight back the slightly sub-par production. As a whole, it's an excellent manifestation of the album.

Freshness is something lacking in today's scene, as bands seem to be overusing boring clichÿs in an attempt to create something of the old days. But alongside bands like Circle Takes the Square, Off Minor and Gospel, the Kidcrash create some of the most refreshing music any scene has ever heard.

Thanks our lord Sabu that somebody reviewed that demo EP a while back, because otherwise I never would've known about these guys' first album ("New Ruins" - when they sounded completely different). That disc is so incredibly fucking good I don't understand how it bypassed my radar when it came out. That said, I thought the new style and demos were decent, and I get why they changed their sound (too many other sound-alikes), but what a fucking tragedy they didn't make more songs with that original sound.

Score is for "New Ruins". I'll have to check out what's online from this one when I have some time and see how it fares.
