As Cities Burn’s album Come Now Sleep begins with the song “Contact,” a track nearly seven minutes long with lead singer Cody Bonnette rarely raising his voice above a whisper. It is a clear statement that this album is not going to resemble anything like the group’s first effort, Son, I Loved You at Your Darkest, a nuevo-screamo album that worked hard to set itself apart from its contemporaries. The loss of lead screamer T.J. Bonnette and the subsequent decision to not replace him but rather continue as a four-piece with brother Cody handling all of the vocal duties leads itself to a moodier, more melodic effort than the previous.

I actually like this album a lot. somehow i keep coming back to this- maybe its a guilty pleasure. it certainly isn't as powerful as their last and for that i am disappointed, but i still think there are few bands that can tackle the theme of theology and the question of gods existence- granted i am an atheist- and i don't know, but i think they do a decent job at it. but they should have changed their name and also taken out like seven late minutes on timothy and that song clouds- that song is awful. "Posted by mattramone on 2008-07-05 09:43:16 i fell in love with their debut but after TJ and Pascale left not only was their live show less energetic but their music was too. One of the biggest disappointments of the year after their debut never mind they make way too many Christian references I mean seriously I'm confirmed mostly to make my parents happy but why do you need so many Christian references? I agree most of the time this sounds pretty good so far, will have to see if I like their old stuff The lack of someone in a band whose sole job is to scream is always an improvement. |
