Well, first off I would like to thank the people of Jade Tree mail order. I pre-ordered this cd the Wednesday before they shipped and paid for the cheapest shipping method, so I was expecting to get this cd in two weeks or more. Yet what did I see in my mailbox the next Monday, but the album, four days after it had shipped, and still a week before it was to be released. So kudos to Jade Tree mailing. Now on to the music, which is what you are all reading this anyway? Both bands have written some awesome songs for this split. They really have outdone themselves this time. I think one of the best things about the new songs, is that both bands sound like they have gone back to their older material when writing the lyrics. The first track “Queen of Pain” is a darker sounding song which reminds me of “Private Eye.” It has the same sound and style to it. Their next song “While You’re Waiting” has “Infirmary” sound to it, but the song writing and lyrics remind me more of their older stuff. Especially stuff of their self-titled cd. If this stuff is a preview of the next Alk3 album, I can’t wait. Hot Water Music has also contributed some amazing songs as well. Both songs sound like a mix between the songs on “Fight and Crash” and “No Division.” They have an older feel to them, but at the same time there are bit of their newer sounds coming through. “God Deciding” has very ND feel to it, with layered, passionate vocals at the end. “Russian Roulette” has more of a FAC sound to it. It starts off with choppy acoustic and yelling vocals, and begins to build into an electric rockin song. One of the best parts of these split EPs, is that each band do covers of each others songs. Alkaline Trio does "Rooftops" probably one of the best HWM songs. They give it a poppier feel to it, while losing none of the feeling of the song. HWM contributes both “Radio” and “Bleeder” for this release. “Radio” sounds a lot like the original, except for the multiple vocals at the end. Other than that, it’s a straight forward version of the song. My personal favorite track on this is the “Bleeder” cover. HWM does this acoustic with a cello. The way that it is played and sung adds so much meaning and feeling to this song, it’s unbelievable. It’s just a beautiful track, that’s really all I can say about it. Overall if you’re a fan of either band or both, you need to get this. Especially if you are an older fan and have felt disappointed by the last Alk3 release, this will reassure you that they are still a great band. This release really makes me love HWM even more, and want to get some more of their old stuff. My only real complaint with this release is that Alk3 only did 1 cover. these songs, jakes on green beers, old school reasons, and matt's solo cd all came out roughly the same time and all kicked so much goddamn ass. i really wished they had been a sign of things to come. instead, good mourning came out, and it was good, but not great. then crimson, and we know how that one turned out. my hopes were really high back then. suck. Everyone else who'se commented here is an asshole who should catch either AIDS, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or all three at once. Stop the fucking petty arguments on a goddamn punk news site's review of a great split album. For fuck's sake... matt does coke. lets not call it a problem. i do coke. i don't consider it a problem. don't listen to what school and the media has had to say about cocaine. yea its bad for u, but no worse than binge drinking or smoking half a pack a day. probably better, just more expensive. i heard that version of radio with the saves the day dude. i cant believe he actually said fuck k, 9 for the album. i don't think that the alkaline trio tracks are nearly as good as the hot water music tracks. this is coming from someone who has considered alkaline trio as their favorite band for 4 years. I dislike how Dan doesn't have a lead track in this album. "god deciding" is the best song released in 2002 (so far) in my opinion. the lyrics are absolutely amazing. the radio cover is great. bleeder should of been left alone. the rooftops cover is as good as i would expect from the trio. their metro and cars covers were pretty good though. eh, thats enough. decent album. This is one great CD becuase it was cheap and I was dying to hear some new Alk Trio. Hot Water Music was a band I hadnt heard much about until I bought this one... but, alas, It turned me into a fan immediatley. I like many of Alkaline Trio's darker sounding omnes such as "Queen Of Pain" , "Private Eye", "Madam Me" and "Trucks And Trains" I think this is a good split, exspecially the Alkaline Trio half, i thought their cover of Rooftops was great but I wouldn't say its better than Hot Water Music's. Also I thought the Hot Water Music covers were great and how they added a little emotion and feeling. i've been a fan since sundials era, and lemme say, this is an AMAZING split. and i don't think matt's on anything but his liquor and cigs..but he says he stopped the cigs...go to the cigars! haha damn this split is hot!...water music and alkaline trio split that is!...hmm You know your drugs...haha Skiba doesn't have a heroin problem, he has a coke problem, get it straight! haha i knew the second song reminded me of something off the s/t, i could never place my figer on it, even after listening to the whole album and the the song, oh well at least im not the only one who heard that haha see, he reinstated what i said about the guitar riffs, good call bud. just so you know, all of the information from those questions is available on the trio website. matt skiba is a horrible performer though.... Listen kids... i understand that not everyone likes every piece of work, even by their favorite bands...but when someone comes to a website looking for a review of a CD it is usually because they are already a big fan, and as I did, some may get upset when all they read is how much the release of the band sucks. Why dont you people use all that energy to review releases by bands you like? It doesnt make sense to waste anger on a band in the first place or the people who like them. I tabed the guitar for queen of pain yesterday an i was wondering if anyone else noticed that the begining is the same as "stupid kid", just a dif melody. hum, Alk3's cover of Rooftops better than HWM's? Being a huge A3 fan I am definitely disappointed with this album... HWM are as awful as ever and their A3 covers are weak... The A3 covering the one HWM song is probably the best song on this album (even though it is a shitty song)... The 2 new A3 songs make me question why I would ever be a fan of this band and I am fucking hoping the new album (whenever it comes out) will be better than this garbage! I'm not really into movies lol, my bad. the big lebowski was before savesthedaypunk's time. haha. i believe we're just having fun now.... 1. this split rocks! i love the alk3 songs and the hwm-songs are ok, and i love rooftops by the trio! he is making a big lebowski reference... I think he's making a Big Lebowski reference. What a name... "the dude" or "the hair on an elphants ass" lemme tell ya your one cool "dude". haha, you call yourself the dude... sorry about the strong. biggest bunch of losers ever assembled. Blue, Red, Green, And yellow, And the month is, December! Thanks for your input asshole. hey jimi and savesthedaypunk, Hey kids, nice on the lables jimmi, i thought there were 7 but close enough. Damn it, all this bullshit arguing about nothing, where the hell are Coldjuly and Fathead? I need someone to provide intelligent conversation. That's not a chello in the song. That's the HWM bassist playing stand up with a bow. Just letting you know oh oh oh, savesthedaypunk! haha, moldy, that was good... hey savesthedaypunk.... "Serouisly dude, don't give me this punker than thou shit cause I'm over it. I'm not 16 anymore and it's not important to me"-tbones, if you are so over being punker than thou, why have you replied 6 times to this review just to continue a pointless argument. Yea it wasn't my greatest review, but then again its not the worst on this site, i've read some that are just stupid or pointless, the DK fresh fruits, and that Ian Mckay live, were short, and never really told me anything about either thing, and the DK one was jsut terrible in spelling. But I'm not replying to thier message boards telling them how much they fucked up, personally i don't care, if someone takes the time to write a review, more power to them, its only an opinion, on an album on some website, its not going to decide the future of the band or anything. So my comparrison to the first wasn't the best, but I was trying convey the feeling I got listening to it, while it had a infirmary sound, it did remind of listening to thier older stuff. And yes, I have been a trio fan since 97/98 and have seen them many times, from small coffe houses with only a hundred people, to pack clubs that hold a couple thousands. Another point is that i didnt give it 5 stars, only 8, why cause its not a perfect, classic album that will be come a stable of the scene. Too many people here throw around the five stars to albums that are really not that great. Sure Alk3 older stuff deserves it, but not this split. Thanks to savesthedaypunk for arguing for me, I really havent checked it since it got posted. Why, well mabey I did the review for fun, and trying to promote some bands I love, not some masterbatory purpose of showing my musical knowledge or to see how many posts I can get (unlike some people). I contribute to this site for fun, and beacause I happen to love punk, and all its subcatagories, and just want to help promote it. I'm just wondering if Jimi or Tbones are such muscial scholars and eloquient writers, where are thier reviews, why don't they do this album and show what a shitty reviewer I am. Anyway I gotta go now kids, you enjoy your little debate and punker than thou/penis comparison thing you got going here. How can you say this is the "best split released by humans" if you hate hwm? fuck yeah. best split ever release by humans. plus the alk3 songs rock more balls than charles barkley. hwm blows. they destroyed radio. the singer needs some lessons. no comment. Matt was in Blunt, Jerkwater, and The Traitors, Derek was in The Suicide Machines , gyga, The Vandals, Face To Face, The Telegraph, Thoughts of Ionesco, Remainder, and i think there was one more im not sure though. (which is an awsome list of bands i must say.) good call on the CD's i have, for your lungs only, goddamnit, from here to infirmary, bluemeanies split, hot water music split, and hell yes 7, you sound like you don't believe i own one of their CD's but whatever lol (damn i typed alot lol.) oh, and i hate the term "emo..." how can comps count when the alkaline trio weren't the ones to release them? I mean, "marc's a dick..." shouldn't count since they didn't release it (although i did waste my money on it just for '97....) Rob Doron was their first bass player, I would have answered sooner but i jus got home, and don't start talking about my spelling, cuz if thats your strongest point, i don't even wanna bother debating with you, anyone can curse me off, prove you know more than i do n ill be happy to admitt it. And excuse me for being modern on the savesthedaypunk thing. Hate drugs, not emo. Thanks jimi, and my face is red on the boxcar misspelling, I was in a hurry. Serouisly dude, don't give me this punker than thou shit cause I'm over it. I'm not 16 anymore and it's not important to me.People should have pride in their work and know what they are talking about when they write. This is the only sub-culture in the world that prides itself on disorganization and screw-ups and just throw it all in the name of "punk" rock. Do you know how juevinile that sounds? Go listen to diesel boy or big wig or whatever watered-down shit people listen to these days. hum, tbones, you mean "boxcar" right? man, i wonder if savesthedaypunk has ever heard jawbreaker....no, probably not.... This is really funny, you have no idea what you are talking about. I don't know where you got the fact that I listen to metal or what have you. You're punkier than you attitude comes off trite and unbelievable since you have no idea who I am or what music I listen to and how long I have done so. The whole point of me writing this shit was because I am such a huge trio fan and I felt that this reviewer had no idea anything about them. Then your genuis question to stump me is how many drummers have they gone through? Well the main 2 were Glenn and Mike. Any other brainbusters? Get a life kid. Go listen to Jawbreaker "Boxer". You're the kind of kid that Blake was talking about.(I know I opened up a can of worms cause now you're going to tell me how long you've liked them) Give it up. You'r a "closeminded ass" you said you like hobastank or what ever that crap is, and then you say your not a metaler, well jesus christ dood, that would leave me to believe your a pouser. Which would mean, you dont own this CD, you might have heard one of this bands songs at your friends house, you follow trends after there already out, AND you pretend you know something about punk, but you don't know shiot kid. So if you've listened to them for 4 years how many drummers have they had in that time? You fucking tool. Yeah, I like hoobastank you tool. You're aim name is pennywise something. You're right I guess it must be awesome to write the same song for 12 years. I'm glad you've counted how many years you like the alkaline trio. They happen to be my favorite band and have been ever since the first time I've seen them, which was in 98 so I guess our time matches up. Just because I think punk kids are lame doesn't mean I like metal, you closeminded ass. I think I hear mommy calling, she wants to wash your jncos. Make sure you take your chain wallet out first.prick. Isn't this site called "punknews.com" or is it heavymetal news.com? go listen to your hobastank kid, cuz ive been listening to alk3 for 4 years, you wanna compair notes? Try me. This is the problem with you kids. A band can be shitty, a review can be horrible or anything else. How do we justify it? Call it "punk"! Fact is, I'm not the one killing your "scene". People should be critical of music, regardless of genre. Something you people should have learned in school was not to write on subjects they have no idea about. If this person doesn't know shit about either one of these bands, then he should a) not do the review or b)research the subjects so that the person sounds like he knows what he's talking about. OR maybe he should sound like an idiot... It's really "punk" that way. just for the person who said that no one liked the alk3 cover of Rooftop. I did like it, and I think you need to pull your head out of your ass. I havent heard one person on here who sounds punkish, cept maybe sickboi, i think JoSH is right, the punk comunity is going to hell because of people like You guys are so fucking critical it makes me sick. I do agree that more people should do reviews that criticize more, myself certainly included. But so what if someone isn't the greatest writer. If you just make shit up to seem "with it", then yeah, back off. But if you are making an honest attempt, more power to ya. right on tbones.... I think Punknews does a great job providing news for everyone on an extremely frequent basis. With that said, these reviews are plain piss poor. hmm, thier much older material huh? Yeah it seemed like the S/T comp of all of their old 7" and singles seemed like light years ago. Who the hell reviewed this c.d. a monkey. Get you shit together duder, hehehe. You make it seem the the S/T comp was actually a full -length they put out. Ohh punknews.org will you ever win. Take that shit to the grave. OOHHAAHH people can have their own opinons. isnt punk all about being able to say and do what you want.it really sucks when one punk disses another punk for having an opinon. i think your the fucking dick. How can someone actually say they liked A3's version of ROOFTOPS better than HWM's original? You're a fuckin idiot, A3's cover has to be one of the worst cover songs EVER. Go back to you're BLink & Sum 41 cds. Dick. i'm sorry but to the kid you said to find a copy of the trio doing radio with the std singer, fuck that. that version is terrible. the std singer is god awful off key. it hurts my head just thinking of it. tbones - i'm glad you said something about the "s/t" comment....i was slapping myself on the forehead when i read that... Great album I agree with the first commentor, radio is a great song, did anyone else hear the version of the song where the std singer traded lyrics with Alk3's singer? if not try n find it it's great. to me the alkaline trio songs sound like watered down versions of dear you eara jawbreaker. i really don't unerstand why people are into this band so much they are unoriginal on record and the most boring band ever live. but anyway the hot water songs are decent but not their best and alk3 doing rooftops sounds like teenagers trying to sing a song ment for a man's voice. To Mr. Reviewer, this cd is amazing. i dont share your opinion on the bleeder track, because i belive no ones voice can beat skibas for that song. but hwm outdid alk3 with radio. the two trio songs give all fans something to look forward to. i got this the other day, and was blown away! i picked it up because im a big alkaline trio fan, and downloaded queen of pain. when i saw hwm had covered bleeder and radio, i shit myself. those are my two favorite songs! the energy in radio kinda lags at the beginning, but it seems like before you know it, its a full blown energetic song, with two guitars and vocals all around blaring at you. bleeder is a somewhat different approach, but just as likeable. as for rooftops, i listened to the original version the other day for the first time, and was comparing them, and i have to say i like alkaline trio's better. the vocals are a bit better, and it does have a poppier sound to it. all in all a great buy for any hwm or alk3 fan. |
