Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)

This album has been out for a while, but it hasn't left my cd player once. It may be because I love everything the band has ever done, but that's beside the point. This is the punkest LTJ has sounded, most likely because of their move to Fat. There is very little ska on this cd, but Less Than Jake has perfected their punk rock sound.

The CD starts with a pounding drum beat and the energy just goes straight up from there. "Kehoe", "Mark Cruise","Gainsville Rock City", and "Malt liquor Tastes Better When You've Got Problems" are all flawless punk anthems. "Last Hour of The Last Day of Work" brings a different sound to the album, and "1989" is another standout. I say that as if there are a few bad songs, but there aren't. All of them are good if not damn great.

I know Less Than Jake plays alot of ska, and I really like there ska songs, but signing to Fat might have been the best thing to ever happen to the band. They have released one hell-of-a punk rock album. They're faster, louder, and better than ever. The rating below may seem a little lofty, but after you listen to "Borders and Boundries" ,you'll agree that this could be their best ever.

    What's that smell? Oh - it's ska.
I thought it was dog shit, but it could just be Less than Jakes fans

    Your joke sucked.

Anyways, Ska at its best. Love Less Than Jake. Gansville Rock City reminds me of my old home in Orlando.

is this a good album? yes. is this a good lessthanjake album? nope, just average. dont' get me wrong, look what happened is one of hte best songs theyve ever written, but the only true standout on the album. gainsville rock city is great live, but the cd version is too produced, to slow, and rogers voice waaaay to clean on the chorus. sounds like a wuss. the album lacks the ska and intensity of the previous albums. the only production complaint is that rogers voice is waaay to clean.some other songs translate good live, and someo f the experimental stuff like 'last hour of last day..' are good. but overall it doesnt touch the ska, rawness and catcyness of the previoius releases. hell theres only 2 ska tracks on the whole thing.

This is definitely a huge departure from thier previous albums, but it is an amazing record. It's nice to have a few cds in the collection that you can sing along with.

there is something about the last line of the previous posting that scares me.look no further than jawbreaker, new found glory, and the offspring for shining examples of just how much record labels shape the sound of the band.i still love borders.it fucking rocks all the way through.-mark

    My Score:

This CD isn't more punk because they moved to Fat, Mark. This CD is more punk because that's how they felt. When they recorded this CD, it was still expected to be released on Capitol. They backed out and got Fat Wreck Chords to do it. The label the band is on has nothing to do with how they make a record.

i did not know that. so ltj had the album ready before they moved to fat wreck chords? ha! i just figured fat told em' "enough with the ska, play fast and loud."ahh, they're still an awesome band with an awesome record out right now, cant wait to see em' this summer. ltj, no motiv, deviates, rancid, and of course, weezer, are the reason to go to van's warped tour(who is it really brought to us by now, lycos or nike or waffel house).

    My Score:

although this album deserves the rating dont say stuff you dont know about. the reason it is more 'punk' as you say isnt their move to fat, the album is the exact same album that was to be released on capitol. so therefore it is a capitol album released on fat wreck chords. fat had nothing to do with any kind of sound. thats why i dont get these little kids that are like, 'the recording sounds better on fat', well smart asses, first off, no, the $20,000 or so that fat gives their bands to record off of does not surpass that of capitol's recording funds. capitol gives $100,000 easy for any recording artist's new full length. moving to fat may have been a smart move or a dumb move in different peoples' opinions, BUT the sound of the album or the 'punkness' has nothing to do with fat wreck chords
