Bolles student dies in collision

An 18-year-old Jacksonville student was killed yesterday when his car smashed into a brick flagpole display in front of the Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. administrative offices on Edgewood Court…
Scott McRae Shad of the 5000 block of Yacht Club Road was on Edgewood Avenue South exceeding the speed limit when he failed to negotiate a turn about 10 a.m., police said.
Detective Mike Fouty said there was no evidence of braking or evasive action before the 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser ran over a curb and into the wall.
Shad, who was alone in the car, was pronounced dead at Shands Jacksonville, according to a police report. He was not wearing a seat belt, but an air bag system in the car did deploy.
Fouty said there was no evidence of alcohol or drug use and that medical tests will be conducted as part of the autopsy to help determine a cause for the accident.
Shad was the son of Harold William Shad III, owner of Mike Shad automobile dealerships in Jacksonville.
Cheryl Bryan, a family friend, said Shad suffered from juvenile diabetes and that the disease may have been a cause of the accident.
"He may have had an insulin reaction," she said.
Bryan said The Bolles School student was in a band called Inspection 12 that had made a CD and that he had been at school earlier but may have been in the area checking on the recording.
"That was his love," she said of the music.
She said the young Shad was an acolyte at St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
Band member Pete Mosely, 20, said he had known Scott Shad since elementary school.
"He was probably the most sensitive, caring person I have known," Mosely said.
He said the band had been together for six years and had recorded five CDs.
