Vernon Maytone to tour with Bedouin Soundclash in the UK
Bedouin Soundclash have announced that they will be joined on their upcoming UK tour by reggae legend Vern Buckley of the Maytones. The musician, performing as Vernon Maytone, will open all of the band's previously announced shows.
Buckley was one half of the Jamaican reggae duo with backing vocalist Gladstone "Son" Grant. The band, sometimes promoted as the Mighty Maytones, formed in 1965 and recorded with famed producer Alvin "GG" Ranglin. Having been passed over by major labels Island and Virgin, the Maytones never achieved a great deal of commercial success like many of their peers. Despite this the band still managed to be highly influential to emerging punk and ska-revival acts with the success of their 1976 full length Madness in the UK. Upon the Maytones' 1981 breakup Buckley relocated to Canada and has since been living in Montreal.
One of the Maytones' best known songs from the late 70s era, "Money Worries" from the soundtrack of the 1978 film Rockers, was covered by Bedouin Soundclash on their 2004 album Sounding A Mosaic. Vernon also made a guest appearance on that recording.
