Sony Music to launch label for GLBT artists
Sony Music is launching a new record label geared towards GLBT recording artists. The joint venture with Wilderness Media and Entertainment, dubbed Music With a Twist, currently has no acts signed, but is planning on starting out by releasing a series of compilations in June to coincide with National Gay Pride Month.
GLBT artists have a long history within the punk community. Guitarist Chris Robison was openly out of the closet, and performed as a member of the New York Dolls on their 1986 live album. More recent artists and scenes have included Riot grrrl acts like Bikini Kill and L7 and the Queercore scene in the Bay Area with Limp Wrist and Pansy Division, the latter of which are releasing a retrospective this month.
