Club Ska venue receives stay of closure
London's Club Ska recently got a stay of closure for their host club The Rayners Hotel. In a situation similar to New York club CBGB's, the venue came dangerously close to being shut down and evicted. The club received a stay that says that it "cannot be pulled down or altered for 6 months" and that the operators "have 6 months to make representations to the Minister as to why it should be permanently listed." The event's organizer Mark Wyeth had this to say about the issue:
This is not the end of the battle to save Ska, Jazz, dancing and the very fabric of the building - but it is a massive step on the road to save this unique corner of West London and everything it represents to us.
Madness frontperson Suggs helped in the campaign to save Club Ska, along with Specials member Neville Staple.
