Rhino plans Gothic set with Cure, Joy Division, Siouxie & the Banshees, Nick Cave, Misfits, Damned

Rhino Records has announced plans to release a boxed set on September 18th titled A Life Less Lived: The Gothic Box. The four-disc set will feature 3 CDs with 53 songs along with a 12 video DVD featuring material that spans from 1978 to 1998. From the press release:

Long before its black velvet and pale skin fashions crept into American malls, Goth music represented an underground movement led by fans who favored songs that tapped into the antisocial energy of punk but celebrated dark introspection, tempestuous atmospherics and visual panache. Rhino brings together influential bands that rarely or never participate in Gothic music compilations to create a fascinating cross-section of all matters pertaining to Goth... as the collection's producer, Liz Goodman, explains in the extensive liner notes, the box showcases "the essential hit bands from a scene that arguably never had hits."

The set will include a number of the genre's cornerstone bands and songs, including "Dead Souls" by Joy Division, "Charlotte Sometimes" by the Cure, "Spellbound" by Siouxsie & the Banshees, "She's In Parties" by Bauhaus and "Temple Of Love" by the Sisters Of Mercy. Furthermore the set will include bands that may ensue the Goth label, yet show the influence and underlying themes of the genre. This includes punk acts like the Damned, the Misfits, AFI, and Lords Of The New Church (members of the Dead Boys, Damned and Sham 69) as well as post-punk acts like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

The set will include track-by-track commentary by Dave Thompson, author of The Dark Reign Of Gothic Rock as well as liner notes with contributions from members of Bauhaus, the Damned, Love And Rockets, The Mission (U.K.) and Skinny Puppy. In support of the release, MTV2 will air a special episode of Subterranean on September 17th that will look at the history of Goth and feature videos from a number of modern and classic bands.
