Myspace to hold concerts to raise awareness for Darfur

The Associated Press is reporting that 20 concerts will be held on October 21st around the United States to raise awareness for the crisis in Darfur. Some bands announced are TV on The Radio in Philadelphia and Alice in Chains in Winston-Salem, North Carolina among others.

More artists are being finalized around the country. A Canadian show is also being worked out in Toronto as well.

The Darfur crisis is an ongoing armed conflict in the Darfur region of western Sudan, mainly between the Janjaweed, a militia group recruited from local Baggara tribes, the non-Baggara people (mostly land-tilling tribes) and the Christians of the region. The conflict began in February 2003.

Estimates of deaths in the conflict are in the hundreds of thousands. The mass media has described the conflict as both "ethnic cleansing" and "genocide."
