Refused vs. Their Own Song
"MTV and popular radio has brought forth the band Hoobastank, which is a harder-edged pop punk quartette, with the hit song "Crawling in the Dark." The problem with this is that in the song, the band blantantly rips off the mid-song breakdown of Refused's "New Noise" as well as totally steals that great riff heard throughout the Swedish anthem (hidden behind distorted chords instead of the picking found in the Refused song). It is ridiculous to listen to the two songs and not hear the distinct similarity. Many bands have "stolen" parts from other songs and called it their own, but this is where the music industry should draw the line. Refused deserves the worldwide recognition that they achieved from this, their one and only radio/MTV hit; what they don't deserve is to have it stolen from the newest flavor in the MTV line of teeny-bopper bands." I haven't heard the song, so I can't really comment, but one cool thing was I did hear "New Noise" played on that new show 24.
