Streams: Hard Girls: "A Thousand Surfaces"

Today's stream comes from San Jose, CA-based Hard Girls. We've got a stream of the band's new release, A Thousand Surfaces.

The trio, perhaps inspired by their time with Jesse Michaels in Classics of Love, get frantic. Although their work still is framed by the reflective songwriting style of bands like Pavement and Slint, the music here is much more frenzied. Vocalists Mike Huguenor and Morgan Herrell trade off poetic lines about shadows that "atrophy in the light of day" and "pushing pins into thin skin" while creating a mammoth size sound that has a moment of chaotic dissonance for every sweet phrasing. And of course, the band's comic-nerd style humor creeps up every so often with tracks like "Eddie Vedder vs. Jack the Ripper." Without question, the release is the band's definitive statement.
