Cassette sales shoot through the roof in 2017
Cassette sales rapidly rose in 2017. According to Nielsen music, about 174,000 new tapes were sold in 2017, as compared to 129,000 in 2016. The year's largest sellers were the tape soundtracks from Guardians of the Galaxy movies, which accounted for 22% of all new tapes sold. Contributing to this zeitgeist, Punknews released no fewer than 5 different tape compilations in 2017 in conjunction with Narmer records. Still, by contrast, Fullerton, California's Burger Records released over 100 different tapes in the same year.
