Rotton Vetoes Title of Rhino Punk Set
us that the ever amicable Sex Pistols
frontman Johnny Rotten has taken issue with the Rhino
Records previously announced vintage punk box set. The Associated Press
reports that the four-CD, 100 song retrospective has been renamed from Ever Get the Feeling You've Been
Cheated? to No Thanks!: The '70s Punk Rebellion. The original
title was Rotten's last comment on stage before leaving the Pistols
final concert in 1978 (reunions excepted, of course). Rotten told the Washington
Post "It's a (expletive) insult to be using my quote to back up product that I have nothing to do
with... To my mind, that's fraudulent marketing, plain and simple. I don't care how much homage they pay to me in the liner notes. They want to use me from a distance and I find that just unacceptable."
Rhino has chosen to rename the set, which
includes tracks from most of the pioneering punk acts with the exception of the Sex
Pistols. The label commented "Here are 100 tracks to tell 99 percent of the
story... For the rest, dust off your copy of Never Mind the Bollocks..."
Rhino project manager Marc Salata commented
"We didn't want to pick a fight with John Lydon, but it doesn't seem too difficult to pick a fight with John Lydon."
