Victory Records Gets Big(ger)
This comes from Aversion.com-
"While many major labels are still trying to stave off the issue of digital music, Victory Records launced its own program to bring its music to the web today.
Unlike other subscription services like Emusic, subscribers to Victory's service will not download its songs, but be presented with access to streams. Victory's plan, which is geared around peer-to-peer file sharing, is the first record-label venture to attempt a revenune-generating system.
Victory's plan is both a response to the unignorable reality of digital music as well as a response to systems like Napster and Gnutella that skirt the issues of creative control and royalty payments. Victory Records chief Tony Brummel stressed his label's commitment to upholding the legal and moral issues that cloud downloadable music.
'As it relates to our repertoire, what we are going to do blows Napster away,' he said in a statement released by the label. 'With all of its legal and copyright issues and a questionable business model Napster will be forced to redefine itself to survive.' "
What does this mean exactly? I am not quite sure. Victory Records is to hardcore what Epitaph is to punk. They have gotten the word out about hardcore like no one else, yet at the same time they play a lot of the corporate games that are antithetic to hardcore. I hope that this program is beneficial to fans. Regardless, some type of music sharing program or system will be available from Victory soon. Keep an eye out.
