Baptists
Baptists [7-inch] (2011)
Brian Shultz
Baptists' self-titled 7" can be summed up in two quick words: Shit rips.
This Vancouver hardcore act, not to be confused with the Norwich act from a similar subgenre, plays hard, metallic, crusty hardcore that splits the difference between Trap Them's corrosive tilt and Cursed's choking smog. Maybe a bit of Ballou-esque guitar work and squalling is in here too, like with "Farmed", which also shows slightly more range from their barking, spitting vocalist, and "Bachelor Degree Burn", which slows down the band's usual speed for more of a You Fail Me-esque, chugging snarl. The dizzy percussion in closer "Life Poser" gives the song this weird, jarring contrast that's pretty cool.
Not much more to say. Baptists provide 12 minutes of a familiar but ripping, well-done sound.
