Big Fuckin Skull
Skulls Rule - OK? (2010)
Brian Shultz
Okay, so these guys, between their facepaint and dumb lyrics about skull-fucking or whatever, like the Misfits. I get that. The Misfits were pretty cool. We can all agree on that. But this loving tribute of sorts is so, so dumb and amateur.
Big Fuckin Skull and their newest full-length, Skulls Rule - OK?, essentially resembles some sort of collection of old and really bad Rancid B-sides--with Misfits influence, of course, via sloppy street-gang singing and shouts--recorded on a four-track, except with repetitive lyrics about skulls that kill people. No, really. That's what this album is about. That's what this band is about. Skulls…that kill people. Every song. They don't include the lyrics in the liner notes, unfortunately, but you can probably get the idea quickly.
I don't even think it's worth singling out any tracks here. This is just really simple and boring and nearly every song sounds the same. I know these dudes are just having fun and putting a pretty consistent thought and aesthetic into their process, but I can't even understand the redeeming and enjoyable qualities that could be had from this. Lyrically, it's something way beyond just "silly," and musically, it's probably generous to even say this resembles Rancid in any way, shape or form.
"Real skulls / they want to fuck your fuckin' face. / … / You best not better think about it." I'm doing my best, guys.
