Russia's Leningrad -- the only band in the world banned from playing in Moscow -- is about to embark on a North American tour next month. The Village Voice called their last tour, "the most profoundly Russian stuff ever…you can't ask for anything more pungent." We ran a review of one of their records last year, and you can check out it out: Piraty XXI Veka along with MP3s at the bands (russian language) site.
The group's US promoters say,
"Founded by Sergei "Shnoor" Shnurov as a raucous parody of Russian pop music, LENINGRAD quickly proved more honest, exciting - and popular - than the stuff it spoofed. The mix of Eastern European folk, ska and hard-driving horn funk needs no translation. Shnoor is Russiaâs answer to a gangsta rapper - spinning lurid tales of addiction, spitting rhymed insults at colleagues and slamming unfaithful women. His larger-than-life persona found fans among teens, punks, academic types, critics, hipsters - just about everyone but the Moscow City Hall."
