:Last night, we got a call from Boom Idiot (booker of the Tempest in SF) saying our Tuesday Night show was cancelled and all future shows were cancelled and that the Tempest was being shut down as a live music venue. The reason? The owners want to turn the bar into a full time restaurant and don't want to do punk shows anymore. Basically, they are late in the dot-com revolution (a dying item in SF) and are demising their own end, because the punk shows were actually making them some money.
This adds to the growing list of SF venues that have been shut down since the dot-com wave hit. The Cocodrie, The Transmission Theatre, The Chamelion, as well as many other live venues and huge practice studios have been sold to dot-coms or shut down. Rumors of The Bottom of the Hill and CW Saloon closing are also amuck in the scene. A dying SF music scene is struggling to stay alive.
The sad thing about this is that the owners have the opportunity to keep it open, they just won't. There is really nothing that can be done about this. Boom is moving all his equipment out today and is looking for another venue. Maybe the owners are trying to sell the place. Maybe they aren't. But they still are just adding salt in the wound.
