Rolling Stone is reporting about the upcoming reissues of the hugely influential first two records from The Stooges. Both 1969's The Stooges and 1970's Fun House will be reissued by Rhino Records on August 16th in expanded editions featuring previously unreleased songs, remixes, and outtakes from the original sessions.
According to the story, White Stripes frontman Jack White contributed to the liner notes and had this to say in an excerpt:
I played the hell out [that tape], like someone was gonna break in and take my tape deck while I was driving, I remember screaming in my head, 'This is Detroit!' And that's what 'Fun House' is to me, the very definition of Detroit rock & roll, and by proxy the definitive rock album of America. The record's passion, attitude, power, emotion and destruction are incalculable.
Although neither album was particularly popular when originally released, over time the albums have become deservedly revered for their influence on punk rock. In fact, in the recent End of the Century documentary about the Ramones, the four members of that group explained that it was the music of the Stooges that brought them together in the first place.
Rhino had previously released a limited edition box set titled 1970: The Complete Fun House Sessions which collected every take of every song from the original Fun House recording sessions. The surviving three members of the band have reunited frequently since 2003, and will be performing Fun House in its entirety this August in London.
