An attorney for the World Wrestling Federation has sent Orange County, Calif.-based independent label Cornerstone R.A.S. a cease and desist letter asking it to stop the sale and distribution of the new album from Wesley Willis, entitled "The Wesley Willis Fiasco Live E.P."

In a letter to Cornerstone, WWF attorney Ira S. Nathenson says that the disc uses artwork that is "confusingly similar to our client's federally registered WWF logo." In the upper left hand corner of the album's front cover is a hand-drawn, near replica of the WWF logo.

The letter continues to say that the cover "infringes upon and dilutes" the WWF's trademark rights, before threatening legal action. The WWF is asking that all copies of the album be recalled and either destroyed or handed over to the WWF, which also wants the album's artwork removed from the Cornerstone Web site. The wrestling giant also wants an accounting of the profits made from the album and a letter stating that all of its requests have been met.

Cornerstone spokesman Hector Martinez said that although the label's executives planned to meet yesterday (May 15) to decide how to handle the WWF's requests, plans already call for the second pressing of the album -- taped during a string of shows the Chicago-based Willis played with his band, the Fiasco, between 1992 and 1994 -- to carry a different cover.

He adds, "We're trying to turn lemons into lemonade and take advantage of any additional light put on this release."

Cornerstone is an offshoot of the Long Beach, Calif.-based independent Skunk, known for issuing the first two Sublime albums "Robbin' the Hood," and "40 Oz. to Freedom," later re-issued by MCA. Cornerstone has released albums by the Austin, Texas-based, all-girl rock act the Applicators, Huntington Beach, Calif.-based cow punkabilly act the Ziggens, and others.
