The full list of nominees for the 48th annual Grammy Awards have been announced. Among the artists nominated are the Ramones, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, the White Stripes, LCD Soundsystem, Shadows Fall, Norma Jean, Foo Fighters, Beck, Franz Ferdinand, Queens of the Stone Age, Weezer, the Arcade Fire and Death Cab for Cutie. A full list of nominations for all 108 categories can be found on the official website.
Of note are the two Ramones nods, as the film End Of The Century is up for "Best Long Form Music Video" and box set Weird Tales Of The Ramones is up for "Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package." Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" from American Idiot is up for "Record Of The Year." The "Best Alternative Music Album" category is perhaps the one to watch, as the new records from buzz bands the Arcade Fire, Franz Ferdinand and Death Cab For Cutie are going up against the White Stripes and Beck. Popular pop-punk act Fall Out Boy is competing for "Best New Artist."
The awards are presented yearly by the Recording Academy, an association of American musicians, producers, engineers, and others involved in the music industry. Members of the Recording Academy vote yearly on the nominees, with an eligibility period running from October 1st of the previous year. Of the major music award ceremonies in the US, the Grammys are the top rated and garner the most public attention. However the event is often criticized by fans and musicians for maintaining a conservative voting record that recognizes sales success and industry hype rather than artistic merit. The 48th Annual Grammy Awards will be held on Wednesday, February 8, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and broadcast live on CBS from 8 to 11:30 p.m.
