On Joey Ramone's birthday (May 19th) New York City's "only punk brass band" the Hungry March Band will celebrate what they're calling St.Joey's Day with an "all-night orgy of devotional fervor." The ensemble's plans include a "punk pilgrimage" of sorts, marching from the Rock-n-Roll High School in Forest Hills where the Ramones attended school, through Queens and other "sacred spots" to Tompkins Square Park. The band expanded on their plans:
"You know how various religious devotees will occasionally have incredibly long marches to visit a saint or a series of shrines? This is that, and it'll begin at noon in front of the school, 67-01 110th Street, Queens (G/R/V to 67th Ave). WE NEED PILGRIMS for this! Anyone who's interested should get in touch with Joe Tuba, email joseph_k@riseup.net…The pilgrimage will wind up at Tompkins Square Park in the east village at about 6:30, and at 7, the processional will begin in all its reverent earnestness: A Saint Joey statue mounted on an ornate platform carried by disciples, self-flagellating punk martyrs, mystics, and heretics, and of course a brass band playing anthemic material appropriate to the occasion. This will most likely step off from 9th Street and Ave A at 7, visiting various shrines and sacred sites around the neighborhood, and winding up at Joey Ramone Place by 8pm. WE NEED PUNK HERETICS FOR THIS!"
Following the procession a show dubbed the Feast of Saint Joey will take place at CBs Gallery at 8pm, featuring an open mic Ramones cover band open mike, the Devo inspired DEVA, the Hungry March Band, and a potluck dinner. The door price is $10 ($5 with food to share) and a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the Lymphoma Research Foundation. Other "secret bands" are set to appear as well.
