A number of you wrote in with the news that Canada's Propagandhi has been nominated for the ECHO Songwriting Prize. According to SOCAN, the sponsors of the prize, it honours some of the most innovative, creative and artistic songs created in the past year by emerging songwriters in Canada. SOCAN is similar to ASCAP in the United States.
Propagandhi's Todd the Rod had this to say:
In Canada anybody who has any songs that get played anywhere from college radio(in our case), to the most idiotic romantic movie can sign up and make sure they get any royalties that would be owed to them. A Canadian copyright collectve called SOCAN are the folks who do it.We were contacted about our song "Speculative Fiction" (from Potemkin City Limits) being chosen for their "Echo creative songwriter" contest. After being assured it had absolutely no corporate sponsors or any behind the scenes B.S. We hesitantly agreed. I think the tipper in favor of the contest was the 5 G's we'll get if we win.
In the unlikely event that we are awarded this prize, we will use it make donations to the Haiti Action Network and The Welcome Place, which is an organization here in Winnipeg that we've done volunteer work for that helps refugees start new lives in Manitoba
