The Flatliners, just released their most recent album Cavalcade, and in celebration made their way across Canada with Broadway Calls and Cobra Skulls. The band has been giving us some great Dispatches documenting the trip, and today we bring you the last, in which the band wraps up the tour. Thanks to The Flatliners for providing such entertaining reads.
Hometown show last night! Drunken show. Late night poutine party at Smoke's Poutinerie in Toronto. Today we have a 9 hour drive to Quebec City.. Good god. Luckily, I was so hungover this morning that I ended up sleeping through almost the entire drive. Lucky me. Apparently we got stuck in traffic in Montreal for a few hours. I had no idea, haha!
After the long drive, we show up at the venue in Quebec City and the place is tiny. You can probably cram 100 people in here we're thinking as we're loading in. The promoter tells us that they've sold 125 tickets and they're planning on fitting as many people in here as humanly possible. I think tonight's gonna be good. My girlfriend and I and Cobra Skulls head out before the show to get some food, and somehow order everything without being able to speak any French. When we get back the place its fucking rammed! It was a mission just to get TO the bar for a drink, let alone getting back to your spot with a fist full of booze. The show was amazing, as Quebec City always is. Kids in this town sing so loud and make you feel right at home, its incredible.
All the bands killed it. During Broadway Call's set I think there was a really confused kid watching because he kept yelling out our song titles to them. Luckily when he asked for "There's A Problem" Matt knew how to play it on bass so he was able to tease the kid for a second. We were all stoked that the promoter let as many people into the club as possible, cause it made the show such a blast. Thank you to everyone who came out and sang along to our new songs. That's a cool thing to see!
After the show we all loaded out drunkenly and headed to Chez Ashton to get Adam from Cobra Skulls his first ever poutine. He loved it. All the bands headed to the big house we always crash at thanks to our buddy Chris, and have another slumber party. I've learned something from all these sleep overs. Let me tell you this: Josh from Broadway Calls loves his late night movie. Tonight's was Drag Me to Hell, a magnificent film. Cheers Quebec City.
April 24 - Montreal, QC:
Before we left Quebec City this morning we stopped by our favourite skate shop, Exo Shop. These guys are so rad. They always buy merch from us to sell at their store and always hook us up with a bunch of free Exo stuff. If you're ever in Quebec City and you're into the skate, definitely check this place out. You will not be dissappointed. We luckily didn't hit awful MTL traffic with our Broadway/Cobras tour van convoy, and got into town at a good time. Were playing at Underworld skateshop tonight, where the stage is ironically on the top floor of the building. I can't believe tonight is the 2nd last show of the tour. No one wants this thing to end. Before the show my girlfriend and I, along with our friend Keebler and Joey who techs for Broadway Calls, got some amazing veggie grub at Commesalle nearby. Now I'm not vegetarian or vegan, but god damn is eating dinner with three vegans refreshing after eating shitty fast food for weeks on tour. We head back to the show, our bellies full, as is the room with people when we get back. Fucking stoked. Montreal has always been far too kind to our band and its clear tonight will be a good show. In that moment I hope that l'll be able to move while we play since I'm so god damn full.
There was a strict time curfew so once we started playing we had 1 hour to do what we were going to do. Instead of flapping our yaps as we usually do, we just played. Song after song after song for 1 hour. And as per usual, the kids were amazing. Montreal remains one of the greatest cities in the world as far as our band is concerned. They never let us down! After the show, my lady's band Cavaliers were playing at a bar a few blocks away, so all three bands loaded our gear down the million stairs as fast as we could. We slammed some sidewalk beers and then booted it to L'Absynthe where they were playing. TMD was on van duty so he raced to his sister's place to drop it off, and headed back to the bar with the beer money we got from our show. The night is young!
I filled in for Cavaliers guitarist on a tour they did earlier this year, so I ended up playing a few songs with them tonight. It was really fun playing two completely different types of music in one night. Its also obviously really cool playing music with your girlfriend! After their awesome set the party ensued. Broken pint glasses, Queen sing-alongs, drunken heart-to-hearts and goofy earings with massive feathers in noses. Yup. Montreal never dissapoints and now that tonight is over I REALLY don't want this tour to end.
April 25 - Ottawa, ON:
Last day of tour today. Its gonna be a tearjerker! My body definitely knows this 10 week long stretch is coming to an end. I can certainly feel it. The show in Ottawa tonight was an early one, which gave us optimal hang time - it being the last night and all. Our friend Jamie showed up before we played tonight with a sampler of his new batch of booze. Jamie is one of the masterminds behind Beau's All Natural Beer - an incredible organic brewery based in Vankleek Hill, Ontario. They brew some tasty beverages folks. Furthermore, Jamie is a guy I drank with in bars back when I was 16 years old and was somehow able to get away with that shit. I trust this man with booze. He knows what he's doing!
The show was a great, especially for it being the last one. Afterwards we said our regretful goodbyes to Broadway Calls since they were staying about 20 minutes out of town and had a show in Jersey the next day. This band is amazing, and the past month with them has been nothing but great. You know you're lucky when you've constantly got the songs of the band you're on tour with in your head. As I said before, no one wants this tour to end, but unfortunately it has to. The good news is that this will certainly not be the last with either of these bands. We love em like brothers and can't get enough of their music.
My girlfriend and I ate at the oh-so incredible Castle Shawarma on Rideau for the 2nd time today after we said our goodbyes to the Broadway dudes. This is hands down my favourite Shawarma place in the entire world. Way too delicious and the staff are really friendly and quick. They've ruined all other Shawarma shacks for me though cause its so good. We scarfed our food down and then headed to our friend Jac's place with Cobra Skulls for one last party. And it was a good one! Cobras had the next day off, and all we had to do was drive 4 hours home so after we all got up we all went out and got late breakfast and chilled for a couple hours. We then parted ways on the highway when they pulled off to head south to New York. We'll miss those guys. Cobra Skulls are one of the best bands out there today, and I'm really stoked that Fat Wreck Chords just signed them. Sad to see them go, but just as I said before, it won't be the last time.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to Broadway Calls, Cobra Skulls, TMD, my lady Britt, Adam Kreeft and Bella the tour dog for making this past while an amazing time and one of the best tours we've ever done. Truly happy with how this one went down and it was a hell of a group effort, that's clear to me. We're extremely lucky to do what it is we do and with the people we share it with. Till next time Broadway and Cobras. Cheers.
