Glen Matlock, original bassist with the Sex Pistols, has formed a new band, King Mob according to Alt Sounds.
The full line-up is as follows: Guitarist Chris Spedding has worked with Harry Nilsson, Sharks, John Cale, Roxy Music, Elton John, Paul McCartney, and played a key part in the legendary concept album, Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War Of The Worlds. Matlock himself has played with Iggy Pop, and joined The Faces upon their reformation. Drummer Martin Chambers is better known for his work with The Pretenders. Rounding out the five piece are another guitarist calling himself Sixteen, and Stephen W. Parsons on vocal duties, who composed music for adverts.
The band's chosen name also has a rich history. The phrase is thought to have it's roots in the Gordon riots of 1780, as accounts exist maintaining that when Newgate prison was broken open, and rioters left the gutted building, they also left the legend "His Majesty King Mob" scrawled on the walls, apparently as notice of the authority under which they believe they were working. The name re-emerged in the 1970s, when it was adopted by a Situationist group. This manifestation of King Mob notoriously infiltrated the up-market Selfridges department store on London's Oxford Street, dressed as Santa Claus, and began giving away as many toys as they could to children believing them to be legitimate store representatives. More recently, the character King Mob in Grant Morrison's Vertigo comics series The Invisibles has taken the name.
