Over the past weekend, the NATO Summit had an event in Chicago to discuss the war in Afghanistan among other issues relevant to the intergovernmental military alliance. To coincide with the event, a protest was organized by National Nurses United (and scheduled to take place) at Daley Plaza and it featured performances and comments from Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine, The Nightwatchman and Audioslave as well as Tim McIlrath of Rise Against.
The impetuous for the protest is to fight for a "Robin Hood" tax on banks' financial transactions with a levy of 50 cents or less on trades of stocks, bonds, derivatives and other financial instruments that they argue could raise up to $350 billion every year in revenue. It's not entirely clear what this has to do with NATO, but the presence of many world leaders is most likely the reason for the protest, not NATO itself at least as far as we can tell.
