Q: What if punk never happened?

A: It would have been something else. I don't mean that to be condescending to punk but the history of modern music has very much been reactions. Each new musical wave has been a reaction to the one before it (perhaps with certain elements of previous genres fused to it). If it didn't come together in the shape of punk it would have been something else.

Look at early hip-hop (which really came together around the same time), which was basically artists taking their favorite parts of songs and putting them together. It was done quickly and inexpensively and was basically the working man's way of throwing a party. Sure it has taken a variety of shapes in the years that transpired but its roots aren't that far removed from punk.

So maybe it'd be called something different but it would still be the same concept. Young people are always going to be resentful and distrustful of their elders and as long as there's youthful hostility and a drop of innovation they'll be something in that vein.
