John Cale, founding member of The Velvet Underground, has announced that he will be performing the band's debut album The Velvet Underground and Nico in concert for the first (and second) time next year. The shows, which will mark 50 years since the album's release, will take place in New York and Liverpool, with the Liverpool date set as the 26th of May and the New York date yet to be announced. The album, which was largely ignored by critics upon release, is now recognized as one of the most influential rock albums of all time, with Brian Eno famously quoted as having said that "the first Velvet Underground record sold only 30,000 copies in its first five years… [but] I think everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band." It is not yet known what the makeup of Cale's band will be, with guitarist/vocalist Lou Reed, guitarist Sterling Morrison and vocalist Nico having passed away in 2013, 1995 and 1988 respectively.
