On May 11, a day before the release of the band's new album, PWR BTTM's Ben Hopkins was accused of sexual assault. A person named Kitty Cordero-Kolin posted in a private facebook group that Hopkins was a “known sexual predator” and that Cordero-Kolin witnessed Hopkins make unwanted sexual contact against other people. The post also accused Hopkins of antisemitism and included a picture of Hopkins posing next to a swastika which was drawn in the sand on a beach. The post was quickly made public though people copying and pasting the post.
The next day, the band released a statement. The band stated that they were "shocked" by the allegation and requested that people who believed that they had been sexually assaulted by members of the band contact an e-mail associated with the band to work towards a resolution. This post was criticized on social media by many people, many of who brought issue with the fact that the band requested that alleged victims contact alleged abusers directly.
Jezebel spoke to an anonymous person that stated that she was assaulted by Hopkins. In that interview, the anonymous person stated that PWR BTTM's statement that they were "shocked" was false. The anonymous person stated that the band's Liv Bruce spoke to the anonymous person about the alleged assault numerous months ago and that Bruce was fully aware of the situation.
Following this, PWR BTTM's two touring members left the group. PWR BTTM were also dropped by their label, Polyvinyl. Polyvinyl has also stated that they will no longer be selling the band's releases and are offering a refund for any purchases of the new album. The band has also announced that they have canceled their upcoming tour. Details will likely develop and we will keep you updated.
