A demo from the group's earliest days, the My Name finds the Babies are a considerably different group than they were on their debut release.
"My Name" finds the group announcing who they each are in the band and describing their respective background. A catchy, jangly bopper, the song finds the group being their most direct. While their studio LP was abstract and comprised of odd little pieces that worked well together, "My Name" is a traditionally structured song that describes more than it suggests.
On the flipside, "The War" draws a little closer to the abstract elements of their later album. While it still jumps along in an upbeat rock manner, the somber intonation of both Cassie Ramone and Kevin Morby's voices creep through, shadowing meanings behind the words that aren't directly evident upon first listen.
Now that the Babies have presented themselves in both direct and abstract manners, their second LP is even more of a mystery. Until it lands, we'll just have to keep guessing, which for the band, is quite fitting.
