This Summer [7-inch] (2012)

Merge Records

While it's not exactly the same as the gap that separated Here's to Shutting Up and Majesty Shredding, two years is still a bit of a wait for some new Superchunky goodness. The theme here is summer, a good fit for Superchunk's peppy indie rock. Boasting one original and one cover, This Summer is a brief but fun listen.

"This Summer" is a solid mid tempo rocker, replete with guitar solo, handclaps and big voices. It's just a hair too slow, but it's still mighty fine. In short, people who like Superchunk will continue to do so.

Casual fans will probably come for the cover, though. Banarama's "Cruel Summer" gets the Superchunk treatment, which means high pitched, nasally vox, rapid fire tempos and just general indie rockin'. It fits into the "punk goes '80s" trap, but c'mon. Sure, This Summer is nothing special, but it's a fun little stopgap while the band (hopefully) pulls together something more substantial.
