Seattle’s beloved punk rock venue, El Corazon, celebrated its 10-year anniversary on Januaru 17, 2015 with the aptly titled promotion, “Punk Rock Furyâ€. The show featured 11 bands, half of which played the main stage while the rest were in the smaller lounge. The booze-filled crowd was rowdy without being violent and (with the exception of a couple token tough guys) everyone seemed to get along.
Local favorites, The Hollowpoints, were the first of three final main stage bands, getting fans to sing along to their stompy, Swingin’ Utters-esque street punk. The 30 minute set, which featured personal favorites “Runaway†and “God Save Anna Nicole†kept the fists pumping and The Hollowpoints showed no signs of aging or slowing down.
The crowd was starting to get antsy for Zeke until The Derelicts, who describe their sound as “punk fueled with alcohol and hate†blasted everyone’s eardrums out of their skulls. Frontman Duane Bodenheimer belted out scream after guttural scream and commanded the stage with reckless abandon, a la Riverboat Gamblers’ Mike Wiebe. No song seemed to last longer than a minute and The Derelicts flat out kicked ass.
When Zeke hit the stage the pit was in full effect. Lead singer / guitarist Blind Marky Felchtone delivered the familiar incomprehensible count off for every thrashing tune, and I have know idea how the band incredibly all started playing at the same time. Classics like “Evil Deadâ€, “Telepath Boyâ€, and “Let’s Get Drugs†rounded out a blistering set that showcased material from Dirty Sanchez, Kicked In The Teeth, and 'Til The Livin’ End. After 20 something years as a band, Zeke still kills it every night and reminds us that we definitely need them more than they need us.
